Title: New old user vox
Post by: vox on March 01, 2011, 05:06:49 PM
Hello!

My name is Vojin, I am 32 years old social worker and teacher assistant at University, Belgrade, Serbia. I am Amiga user since my first Amiga 1200 and currently am registered user of OS 4.1. Am interested in OS from ordinary user perspective, willing to support software by purchase and community ideas, as well as regional (Ex-Yugoslavia, Balkan) and local (Serbia) Amiga scene that was also quite strong back in 90s even it was difficult time in Balkans.

AW.net and Amigans.net users know me already, but I decided not to use both sites for moderation policies such as thread locking and unequal treatment of users without public policy. Some users remember me for help, other for trolling (but in fact stabborn defence).

Hope here will be better, no more community websites to go!

Hullo rer howz it gawn an welcum tae ra nuthoose... :)

You shouldn't have mentioned OS4.1 (bad start) but feel free to voice you opinions round here, the mods here can argue with the best of them (although to be honest some of them seem to be in hiding just now)... :)

Anyways... welcome to Amiga.org, now start an interesting thread but remember the cardinal rule around here never mention "they who shall not be named" or the Balkans war will look like a nice Sunday picnic in the park with cakes & jelly... :D

Already use AROS and AmiKIt with my OS 3.5 CD, willing to use MOS if realised for SAMs (no place and money for more computers!)

Of, there are "those who shall not be named". Long, but nice name!

Average salary is 338 euros, paypal doesnt work and I&I live outside EU (but yet in Europe) so add VAT, heavy import tax and process and P&P.

MacMini is nice machine, I wish Moana gets bugfixed and official AmigaOS 4.0 MacMini is realised now when there is no legal process with AmigaInc and Hyperion has legal rights to port AmigaOS to whatever he wishes to.

Early port seems to be done by Soft3D, soft division of Acube. I&I understand Acube doesnt need to compete with itself, but yet it would bring more users to AmigaOS 4 and competition is always healthy. Plus with a dead computer, even if its from Apple? Next AMCC will be faster then G4 and way too advanced then MacMini.

This would make MacMini 2nd machine that can run both AmigaOS and MOS 2.x (Classics can run only older MOS)

Yet it was no problem to get the expensive Sam board? You can get MorphOS compatible Mac + license with 1/4 of the Sam price.

MacMini as Amiga

PROS
- Cheap fast G4 with Altivec !!!
- Apple ports and standars: quite nice
- Its Apple and it runs great MacOSX and MOS, AROS and hacked AmigaOS 4, Yellow Dog Linux too!
- Its small
- Its cute
- Its bargain now when Apple has gone to x86 camp. In fact Mac is cheaper then ever, but yet most expensive x86/x64.
-Falls in tradition of small Amigas (A600, SAM ITX, AmigaOne small models,Minimig)

CONS
- Unexpandibility or difficulty to find proper components in 2011 and beyond
- Limited software support from all and hardware repair unavailiablity
- Some limits like gfx card and integrated components
- Its cheap but it needs LCD monitor, bigger hard, more RAM, keyboard, mouse, more space, electrictity ...

DDR memory and IDE devices are easily available from larger stores, too.

For example locally for me:
1GB ram upgrade would be 26 €: http://hintaseuranta.fi/tuote.aspx/15391
320GB PATA HDD would be 63 €: http://hintaseuranta.fi/tuote.aspx/236371

Repairs are easily available from apple service providers. It certainly is much better situation than with any custom amiga HW which you need to ship out to another country or worse to another continent.

Yes, but SATA is more easily avail, good Apple service for me is at US while Acube is in Italy. Everything is possible, and it isn`t, but lats say but MOS was late (and OS 4.0 is a hack) for MacMini. Good choice, users should enjoy such variety of operating systems and nice product. Its great MOS will be avail for more and more PPC Macs and I could only wish AmigaOS 4 goes the same. Or that they finaly make one operating system out of them - dubbed AmigaOS 5 :-)

Waiting for X1000 ... if your wait is prolongued, would you consider buying SAM 460, I am intersted to see how this waiting is influencing people :-)

You lose second core that is not supported anytime soon and XMOS which is not anything that special. Truth is 460 CPU is no monster compared to PAT, but quite decent and much faster then 440 or AmigaOne G3 for sure. Or PPC expanded classic. PCI-E, DDR2 and SATA is there, integrated 2D and RadeonHD 3D. Also you get a lot money left, system can be built for eur 1 200. I cant make it, but you can. If you give plus 200 eur for monitor, you could have machine that would by everything but P3 1Ghz CPU be near any decent PC of today.

OK, SAM 460 will remain most powerful board availiable, and overall in some aspects (not the CPU, or until software gets optimized for it) until X1000 is realised.

Why? SAM 460 and Natami - news people have been waiting for years!

There might be other reasons not to buy that Mac Mini he doesn't want to introduce here, maybe because he wouldn't like to start a silly flame war. Making questions about someone else's budget and the way he/she prefers to spend it is rude and unfair. Please don't go on this way.

This has been covered in numerous other threads before, but since you asked:

- The Sam 460 board is very expensive vs the performance it gives. Even basic Mac Mini G4 runs circles around it. There are better (cheaper & faster HW, better spare parts, repair&support situation) targets for the port, for instance PowerBook G4, PowerMac G5 and iMac G5.

- Considering the tiny HW base it would lead to little gains in number of new MorphOS users. While some Sam users are interested in running MorphOS, most are not (this has been backed up by various polls, too).

- The Sam HW is very different from the currently supported HW. Various Mac models are very similar to each other and thus making ports to them is much easier than going for some totally alien and new HW.

There are more reasons but these are the most obvious ones.

C'mon, thinskins!

AX1000 (if realized, as in put on amigakit for actual purchase) will be pretty cool.

Sam 460 looks pretty cool as well.

MacMinis with MorphOS already are cool (already as in they are already "in the wild").

Aros has potential to be cool.

Classics? ... well...classics are classics ;)

there is always a dark side:

MorphOS: runs on Macs, has wonky licensing scheme
AOS4.X :  Hyperion.  That's enough.
Classics:  We ain't getting any younger.  Oh, and Git offah mah lawn!
Aros:  Can someone say alpha?

All this bickering is the power of the one (MS) ring.  Fight its influence!

You want the most NG bang for the buck?  No brainer - go MorphOS (Or Aros, if you're good at debugging your own).
You want the most and have a pure "It's my own, my only, my precious!" attitude about the hardware?  Easy!  Go Classic :D  Naah, just joshing - get a SAM.

Wanna dink around and see what you can do in 2M of chipram and a handful of fast?  Classic all the way, baby!

That is how I felt about your welcome.

SAM 440/460: expensive, strange

AMCC data can be obtained, and its in the MOS best interest to support "this new strange alien technology". There are people who own PPC boards and would try MOS if they could. Some would buy it.

The HDD in Mac Mini is normal 2.5" PATA drive. The drive is quite easy to replace. See here: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-Mac-mini-PowerPC-Hard-Drive/268/1

If you just want extra HDD storage easily you can use a SATA HDD with a HDD enclosure via USB.

There's also beta version of the Helios Firewire stack (http://aminet.net/package/driver/other/Helios_0.4-svn_r560) available so if the HDD enclosure has a firewire port it might give better performance than USB.
