Finally got my Amiga 1200 Yesterday!
http://twitgoo.com/201g8h
At first I had some issues with video output, "rolling screen".
Works ok with composite so probably something wrong with my rgb->scart cable(I got the cable when i bought my amiga 500 and 600 and it works great on them).
I then tried resoldering the cable but noticed that previous owner had used wrong values on the resistors, going to buy new ones today and give it another go!:hammer:
Installed Workbench 3.1, then the ACA1230/28 Accelerator and tried some whdload games, Monkey Island 2 =)
Since I've never owned an Amiga until 3 weeks ago, I need some tips on essential software and utilities that I might need.
So far I've installed:
lha
unzip
adf.device
adf2disk
whdload
One thing I know I want is some kind of music player for playing mods, but I have no idea which one is good.

I would say get Amigasys
It comes with all the essentials and you just need OS3.0 or 3.1 to install it

Damiga, your going to have a lot of fun! :)
Eagle player and Deliplayer are both good for MOD and XM's etc.
You can also convert MP3 files to ADPCM, they sound almost as good, and play just fine.
In terms of getting workbench running sweet (I don't know if a pretty workbench is a priority?)
to make pretty:
NewIcons -They are good looking, but a litlle hungry.
Magicworkbench -OK looking, resource light.
Visual prefs- change the look of windows and gadgets
birdie -pictures in window borders
magic copper - multicoloured copper fade on background (you can overlay pictures on this as well).
ease of use:
ClickToFront- double click on window to bring to front (should be in your tools/commodities folder)
MagicMenu-have all your software on right click menus at the top of the screen
To make it run faster:
FText and FBlit -use your fast ram rather than chip ram for text and graphics ops.
CMQ030 -copymemquick for 030
IconBeFast -speeds up icons
WBCtrl -put icons into fastram
think ACA has a MapRom function?, this will speed up accessing ROM libs.
This thread is (mostly) relevant to you:

Congratulations on your purchase :)
I have had amigas before, but I too just recently got myself of an a1200 for the first time in a few years and am having a blast :) Hope you get a kick out of yours too :)
As for software recommendations there's probably quite a few things you should know about when using a nostly default OS3.x install. Besides the productive type software and games there's also a bunch of enhancements, libs, toolkits, and so on that are definately worthwhile, if not almost essential.
In no particular order I'd recommend:
MUI (gui toolkit, used pretty heavily and needed by a lot of software)
Fblit (will use the faster "fast ram" for a lot of gfx and sound data, preserving precious chipram and speeding up the display somewhat in the process).
Ftext (similar to fblit, but deals with text)
Magic Menu 2 (not essential, but handy. Basically gives the user the ability to use pop up menus instead/as well as the standard bar at the top of the screen. Also adds a little configurability to the way menus are used)
NewIcons (an alternative icon system. Allows for up to 256 color icons and is used fairly regularly.)
Im sure there's plenty more Im missing, but Im drawing a blank at the moment :)
As for a mod player, Im not really a mod guy, but Hippoplayer seems pretty popular.
Edit: Ah, Khephren beat me to it :)

@Fishy_fiz only just, mate, only just! Yours was more in depth though... which is why I got in there first!
@Damiga. Before you start patching and adding utilities, it's a good idea to (shift) drag copy your pristine workbench onto a spare (bootable) partition...just in case :) That's all you need to do to have mutple bootable workbench's.

Sweet!
Some great tips there ppl, Thanks!

I believe everything mentioned is included with AmigaSys

I haven't used AmigaSYS, but in the same vein, you can use something like ClassicWB.
On my A1200, I've been using ClassicWB FULL for a few months and I'm pretty happy with it..
The only problem with it as I see it is that I don't yet have a feel for what it's doing as I didn't set it up.
I'd never used ScalOS which it uses, so it took me a bit to get used to how to do things.
Whereas, if I'd started with a clean WB and added things as I needed them, it would be more painful, but I'd have a better feel for how they work...
Also, there's a newer package around here BetterWB which is a similar type of product with a slightly different angle..
I'd check them all out and see what you think..
Welcome! ;-)

Amiga OS 3.5 or OS 3.9
Boing Bags and extras
http://www.monkeyhouse.eclipse.co.uk/amiga/boingbag/
YAM 68k and many modern 68k software could run well
If possible, increase RAM to max
If you are really brave, AROS 68k
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Aros/Platforms/68k_support
Aminet, mass of things is still 68k

And enjoy your AGA chipset to the max :-)

If you really want to experiment, you could go ScalOS
http://scalos.noname.fr/
or download AmiKit on PC and take everything back to roots
