Title: Doom FPS benchmarks
Post by: runequester on February 13, 2011, 12:00:36 AM
So post some Frames per second benchmarks of Doom running on your machine, and what hardware the machine is using :)

I'll start it out:

Using Doomattack, with screen size two steps below max.
High detail 10-12 FPS
Low detail 18-20.

They both fluctuated a fair bit of course, but those are pretty average.

This is on my ACA 030/56 from Individual Computers, and plain old AGA.

Man does that bring back some memories!  1998.  I use to play and tweak ADoom and Doom Attack like there was no tomorrow.  Had a A4000 with A3640 and was not getting good frame rates, but was around 10fps full screen 320x240.  Then I got a CSMK II 060 at 66MHz and it rocked!  Was getting like max FPS 35.  That was NICE...

I have nothing to report until my '040 card comes, but Im quite interested to see different results from different classic configurations here, particularly how well the new ACA cards fare in comparison to similarly clocked cards from other vendors.

Just a quick question.
How are you getting your Frames Per Second information?
(Found a text file that says to start it with -fps, so trying that now...)

Was playing DoomAttack just now with my ACA1230/28 and it is fast enough to be fun.  :-)

OK, I was getting 8-12 FPS.  Infrequently, it would drop lower, but not often.
That was in low quality.
I also just tried changing the C2P from the 20 optimized to the 20 blitter, and it looks to have given me an extra FPS or 2. (14 was the highest I saw with that)

All of this was screen size set down 2 from Max.

Low detail gives it a significant boost in speed too.

Start it from shell with -fps should do it, at least in doomattack

I'll try with the blitter option and see if it makes a difference here.

Just discovered a doom benchmark site, now you can compare to PC:

not to shabby really :)

Thank you Cammy, I'll test the PRBoom file on my OS4, because I want know the Sam potential.

Interesting....  Great site..
It's really interesting to see how many machines, even 486-100's (and 1 P60) were under 20FPS, going down to about 11FPS..
It really shows that, expecially with those early PCs, it wasn't just CPU power, but video card and other issues..
Looking at that tho, my A1200 with ACA1230/28 is respectable at 6-8 FPS in High Detail (I tend to run in in low detail to be playable tho. 10-12FPS ;-).

Running with half the framerate on half the CPU speed and a 30 compared to 486's.  Not too bad.

Problem again was upgrade costs.  I could add a video card to my PC for $200 (less if I helped someone upgrade thiers and collected their OLD card, which I did to build almost all of my first PC.).
But in 1993 (Doom's release date), a 68040 with some RAM for the Amiga was MUCH MUCH more money..
(At least here in the U.S.)

Thats true...but over on this side of the pond, you'd have been lucky to get a decent 486 PC for less than a grand, without a decent graphics card :)
