Title: Software recommendations for an 030@56Mhz A1200
Post by: adrian82 on February 09, 2011, 03:11:37 PM
Hi folks,

I just ordered a brand new ACA-1230/56 from Individual Computers, sporting a Motorola 68030 running at 56 MHz and providing 64 MB of FastRAM. I haven't been using my A1200 for a while and also I'm not up-to-date what kind of software there's currently available. Besides the plans to install Debian Linux (68k) plus upgrading the installed OS3.1 to OS3.9, does anyone have any software recommendations for my soon to be boosted miggy?

Adrian

shapeshifter is fun on my A1200/030/50, and yours beats it by a few mips :)
I run photoshop on mine, and play marathon etc. Not having an MMU for screen refresh might slow it down a little bit.

There are quite a few nice emulators in general for AGA: Gameboy, Speccy ,C64 (magic64), MSX, PC to name just a few.

Game wise, you could test it out with TFX, gloom (2 player is good on a 030/50), genetic species, doom, I think there's a decent port of SCUMM engine doing the rounds as well. eye of the beholder 1 & 2 have both been ported to AGA.

Eagle player is good for MOD tunes etc. Also, if you like MOD tunes, try out tracker Hero (guitar hero for MOD's).

And of course plenty of demo's, but not the most recent ones :( you'll probably have more luck with stuff from the nineties.

On the games front, Gloom deluxe, alien breed 3D, doom attack and genetic species will all run great. Breathless too.

For some you may have to reduce the screen size 1 or 2 steps, but its still nice.

I'm strugging to think of any thing really new.
There's been hacked and advanced versions of Elite and Stunt Car racer as well.

Hiya,

You could give ScummVM AGA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nh2r-3f_tiM) a go (AmiNet), I'm still waiting for someone with one of the new 56Mhz 030's to try it out for me (hint, hint).

Run first SysInfo and find out what MIPS and HD transfer rate your getting with your box.   MIPS should be 12+ and your transfer rate 2MB's+, if not you need to run the ACTune utility and look up SpeedyIDE.

There's also an experimental version that runs Discworld over in the EAB Zone (http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=56815) which you might want to give a wirl.

New versions of Alien Breed 3d II: The Killing Grounds are totally playable on a 030 now too, so give that a go.

Also the ACA1230/56 does have a MMU so Shapeshifter will be no problem. It's the ACA1230/28 that misses out on the MMU, but neither of them have a FPU.

NetBSD would probably be better than Debian on the 030 so you might want to try that as well.

AmiMasterGear is the best emulator that you should definitely try, all those Sega Master System and Game Gear games should run full speed.

Get yourself a cheap PCMCIA ethernet or wireless card to come online and play Dynamite against us.

Got a link for this new version ? I'd love to play it on a real miggy, rather than emulation :)

Virtual Karting (http://hol.abime.net/1580/screenshot) I had a blast with back in the day on an '030 based a1200. Gfx are a simplistic, but it "feels" and controls great. Alien f1 (http://hol.abime.net/1578/screenshot) might be worth checking out too. Xtreme Racing is a good MarioKart clone (http://hol.abime.net/1616/screenshot) that runs very nicely on an '030 as well.

edit: cool, I never knew Alien F1 had rtg support. Should look quite nice for a 680x0 3d game at a high resolution.

Better to call it Virtual GP as it's final version is known  as VGP.

That's you told!

Application wise, do we have any new apps? I can't think of any.

@runequester, new alienbreed 3d II:

What about Frontier: Elite II? And Syndicate? Ultima VI should be sweet too.

Wish I had the money to get one, I'd be interested to see how much faster it is than the older cards - with that fast RAM on it it's probably pretty nippy, especially good for emulation, which is memory intensive.

Got a network connection on that thing? YAM is an all-time favourite of mine. If only it was available on Linux! :(

Need to try AB-TKG today :)

How about virtual karting, could it be easy to remove rastering?? (black lines) of it?

Both Frontier and Syndicate run pretty snappy on that card.

Hi, this is my new post. I am an old amiga user from Uruguay!

I want to know where you can order the ACA/1230/56. There is no stock in amikit.com not vesalia.de

Regards!

To OP

I dont know why everyone always mentions FPS shooters. Do some fun and productive things like Vista Pro, Pixel Pro, Image FX, Photogenics, etc.. still good tools til this day.

And lots of fun emulation you can do to with that speed...

Unfortunately I think the 56mhz version is sold out (someone feel to correct me if Im wrong here). I do believe there's still 42mhz and 28mhz versions available from amikit though.

P.S. Welcome aboard  :)

Really need an FPU though..or Winuae.  The software you mention really shines on a 24 bit high res screen with a fast maths crunching cpu, and Winue fits the bill

Why making a non MMU 42 or 28 versions? I already have an 030/50 with 64mb ram...

Anyone can confirm if it is sold out?

Regards.

Hi guys,

I haven't been notified about answers in this thread and now that I checked it I'm more than overwhelmed by your suggestions. Thanks a lot guys, I will look into your suggestions in detail once I got my new Turbocard up and running. ScummVM and the emulators sound especially interesting :).

Greetings fron snowy Norway,

Adrian

Awesome, congratulations :). I was actually talking to one of the guys at amiga-shop.net, just asking them whether they actually still got some left. And he said "Yes, but only three are remaining and you are among the lucky ones to get one :)."

Unfortunately, I won't be able to use my ACA-1230 until I will be back in Germany the next time which is at least a few months from now :(.

Have fun!

Adrian
