Hi everybody! :) I am new here but not new in using Amiga. But i am completly new in creating a Tower and using the 3.9 OS. Therefore i have some questions...
The idea is when it is finished to have a 3.9 system with CD-rom and internet access :)
1. Is the CD-Rom connected to the PCMCIA "slot"?
2. If it is. Is it possible to have the network card and a CF adapter (for ADF Transfer Kit) connected at the same time? or is there other solutions?
3. Do i need a special CD drive or will anyone do?
4. Is it possible to install Amiga OS 3.9 directly to the HDD by using Winuae?

1. It can, but much better to connect it to the IDE interface.
2. No. You can only use one PCMCIA device at a time. IIRC there are PCMCIA "splitters", but they don't work on the Amiga AFAIK.
3. Any IDE drive will do.
4. Yes. You put the HDD in a PC, configure UAE to use it, install Workbench, then put the drive back in the Amiga. There are a few posts on this forum with more details which you can find by searching.

You are almost certainly better off using an IDE cd rom option, than the PCMCIA option, though its a possibility if all else fails.

Thanks for the quick reply!
runequester/motorollin:
The reason why i asked about connecting the drive to the PCMCIA port was because i thought it would be impossible to connect all three (CD-rom, HDD and Floppy) to the same output. Sense i thought you needed a different (twisted) IDE cabel for the Floppy and another one to use with CD/HDD etc...

Hi see Thomas' guide for setting up OS3.9 in WinUAE:
http://thomas-rapp.homepage.t-online.de/os39uae.html
Suggest you get a 4Way Buffered IDE to connect your HDD/s and CDROM:
http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=42&products_id=532
Then you can run your PCMCIA network card off the PCMCIA Port but you'll have to swap it with the CF adpater for file transfer or do the file transfers over the network.
Good luck with the project, an A1200 Tower is a great project and there are lots of possibility's where you take it depending on budget and what you want to acheive :-)
If you're intersted I posted the ups and downs of my project over at Amibay, its a huge thread now but lots of info and pics!

If you are new here then i will give some very valuable advice. Franko smells really really bad. Best to avoid...

You can get a 4 way IDE buffer thingie, to make it all work. There's other options too, I got some help in a recent thread about it. I'll see if I can dig it up, or try searching the forum for "cd rom"

Thomas' guide looks really great! and that 4way IDE thing can be an idea, but i just remembered that you put the HDD and Floppy in different IDE connectors. So a correct installation would be to put the floppy and CD-rom together and the HDD by itself. Am i right?
And thanks for the Amibay link! It looks really intresting! I might find several useful things there :)

By using the term "sheep girls" you are implying that there are sheep boys. So, how are your ram girls going?

Having tested numerous CD/DVD drives on various Amiga set ups my advice is steer clear of Panasonic IDE/ATAPI Drives as they tend not to work very well (if at all) with any of the buffered interface boards or driver software on the Amiga.
Sadly the same can be said for a lot of the newer drives available, they tend to use SCSI III commands which is not supported fully by any current Amiga software drivers.
You may say but I'm talking IDE/ATAPI here but underneath they still use SCSI commands in operation. Older IDE/ATAPI drive that have firmware that uses SCSI II tend to work without problems but these are getting harder to find. The best drives for the Amiga I have found from experience are the LITEON brand.
I use these myself and have never had any problems with them but these are very hard to buy new today as again most of the newer models use the SCSI III protocols... :)

Thanks for the semantic heads up, there, Oh Shepherd Kesa :D

Hi!
No probs for the links, I hope they help :)
Regarding the 4Way IDE device you connect the HDD and CDROM to that and the device connects to the A1200's IDE header.
You can have them on the same IDE or seperate, it dosen't matter you just need to install IDEFix97 to activate the second IDE header on the 4Way IDE.
As runequester says there are other options such as FastATA or IDEExpress adapters, these add the extra IDE ports but also speed up the data transfer, with a normal 4Way IDE you will get 1.7-2.2mb/sec but with these other (more expensive) options you can acheive 5-8mb/sec which is a nice boost.
The Floppy Drive still connects up to the floppy header on the Motherboard, you just need a longer cable. I have lots of these in my box of spares so if you need one PM me and I'll hapilly send you for the cost of postage only.
All the best,
Steve.

I have an old 4x NEC drive in my closet that I have used for my old IBM PC. It would probably be able to work well in the Amiga too. Since it worked even with Windows 3.1. So i don't think i will have any SCSI III problems with that one. I just hope it still works :)

OK! But does that mean that i must have a 4Way device to connect the CD-Drive? Or is it an optional extra if i want to install more devices? Could be good to know :) Sense i'm sitting here and writing a list of stuff that needs to be ordered from Amigakit.

I just checked my own collection of cables today and i did not find anyone long enough, so you could send me a PM!
