Title: Elite Game Help...
Post by: brianb on January 24, 2011, 08:24:07 PM
Wondering if their are any Elite experts out there?   I like to be good at this game but find it hard as hell.

My biggest problem, besides i'm hopeless in a dogfight, is getting lost.  I select another planet and hyperjump over there.  But then i still seem to be really far away from the planet, and forgot finding the space station thing for docking.   Am I missing something?  Is this game supposed to be hours of flying around in space?
Thx

Elite 1 or 2? In 2 all you have to do, IIRC, is double click your destination on the star map and that will become your active autopilot destination.

Right now I was just trying Elite not Frontier (which i think is elite 2)...   Is Frontier better?  Maybe I should just go to that one.

From what I remember, you come out of Hyperspace early  if there are pirates/smugglers/police after you or your cargo. When you've dealt with your problem
and you're still far enough from your destination, you can Hyperspace again.

P.s Someone will probulary put me right?

You'll want the automatic docking upgrade, but until then get a lot of practice maneuvering.
When you come out of hyperspace fly towards the planet and hit accelerate time. Then when you come closer you can line up to go to the space station. Remember you will have to make the spacecraft roll like the space station does at the last moments of docking.

I think Frontier is a big improvement over the original Elite.

I spent many an hour on Frontier when I was a kid.  Trading across star systems, fighting pirates, taking assasin jobs, doing stuff for the military, giving dodgy people a lift, trading in illegal goods, buying cool new starships and kitting them out with shields and lasers - you name it I was doing it.  Great fun.

I even found one really cool trading route where gemstones were classed as rubbish in one star system, so they literally paid YOU to take them away, and then I could sell them on at a nearby star system (where unfortunately they were illegal, but hey it wasn't a Ferderation system so who cares if I get a criminal record there) so I could make an absolute killing! Fantastic! :-D

There is no modern equivalent for Frontier these days.  We have much faster and complex gaming consoles, we have graphics to die for, but we just don't have the games that we used to!

AH.

By the way, I used to play Frontier on my stock 500 back in the day, but if you've ever tried it on an 060 machine... wow.

Great game I spent many a fine hour till 02:00 / 06:00 in the morning playing this game then having to go to work.

I first remember playing this on a 32k Electron with a cassette tape drive to load the game, I also remember dis assembling the Electron to pull out the speaker wires so that the machine would not wake the rest of the house when coming or going into hyperspace or getting into battles.

Bought the Commodore 64 after the Electron, then got an Amiga 500 and bought Elite which was a lot more fluid running on the A500 and took me a while to get used to, you really need to practice the docking on the space stations and excel yourself in battle, it does take a while to get used to it and it takes a lot of practice but its all worth it in the end.

Cheat Codes - not to be used unless you are a loser

Sorry dudes

Wish I could help you, but I can't remember to do what you're asking. Elite is one of the only games I ever played seriously on the Amiga. I played it first on the Timex-Sinclair 2068 computer.

A few hints for this fantastic game:

When you jump into a system, line yourself up on the planet and hold down the "j" key to "jump" forward in time.  It will stop if you get within range of the planet or if another ship(s) comes within range of you.

If you are attacked, stop your engines and turn and face your attacker(s), line up your laser and blast away.  You should manage to destroy 2 of 3 attacking ships this way.  Once the surviving enemy ship(s) start shooting at you, speed up to 50% and then take them on in a dogfight to finish them off.

To dock without a docking computer you should fly towards the planet until you see the space station.  Now position your ship to fly halfway beteen the station and the planet and as you approach the midway point, switch to a side viewso that you can see the space station entry port.  When you are side on to it, stop your engines, rotate your ship so you face it and then fly in using 25% thrust and rotating with the slot.  If you have to abort, stop your engines, turn 180 degrees and fly away using your rear view to align yourself correctly before turning and trying again.

To make money, find a level 4 or 5 dictatorship naer a level 10 or 11 democracy and fly between them.  Buy food and textiles and the low level planet and sell them at the high level planet while buying luxuries and computers at the high tech and shipping them back to the low tech.  When you get more spare cash, buy the minerals low and sell high as they're sold in grams and you can earn extra cash quickly this way.  Also get a fuel scoop to collect cargo canisters from ships you destroy.

Upgrades in order (more or less):
Better front weapon
Large cargo bay
Fuel scoop
Docking computer
ECM system
Extra power unit
Much better front weapon

You know you're good when you "milk" Thargoids with controlled laser blasts for their little attack ships.  :)

I always wanted to get into Elite and then Frontier when they were released, but at the time I was impatient and they weren't "immediate" enough for me. Maybe I should try them again sometime as my tastes have changed as Ive gotten older.

What about Freelancer? Or on iOS there Galaxy On Fire and GOF2, which is amazing. EV: Nova is another very good space combat/trading game, and for online players there is of course Eve Online and also Outer Empires is very good.

Note that I've never actually played Elite or Frontier, so I'm just going on what I've read about the game.

Thanks so much for the tips!  The _holding down_ the J key is a big piece of the puzzle i was missing.  That along with the tips should help greatly.

Also thanks for some of the modern equivalent games online from others..  Need to check those out too.

Hmm didn't know about Freelancer, that looks kinda good... thanks.

Elite, all I remember is how the docking computer was essential. I was just a low level thug who never got very far...

There is a cool lil' bug that gives you unlimited storage space.

Try Oolite (http://www.oolite.org/) if you have OS X, Windows or Linux box... It's closer to a modernized Elite than to Frontier (personally I never liked Frontier much anyway). It's open source.

The basic version is pretty much prettied up Elite, but there are tons of expansion packs (http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/OXP_List) which both make it look amazing and adds all kinds of other functionality.

First of all you need to start basic, so start trading first between 2 safe systems.
Autopilot is a must in Elite as well as Frontier, computers and in Frontier Robots is your best bet.
Start making cash and upgrade only to a larger craft when you have more than enough.
Once you done that, you can start with fights and missions.

As for Frontier, it's better to start with the missions right away, if you follow these closely, you should end up with a Thargoid craft and tons of space, almost impossible to destroy.
