I have decided to return to the Amiga, purely for fun and a hobby. Got to sort out an OS4 machine for myself soon, can't wait!
-
Of course, Amiga is just too much fun to leave. Don't know if OS4 has quite the same appeal as the classics.

Cue various next gen advocates from each camp...
This is control, you are cleared for incendiary run on target...

Of course, everyone knows that AROS is the future of Amiga. MorphOS is silly and AOS4 is old and smells of cheese.

To be honest, I like what I am seeing in 4.1 Classic but this would require a Mediator board with Radeon 9200 256MB.
On top of an A1200 with Blizzard PPC or Amiga 4000 with Cyberstorm PPC.
I'm lucky to have the last one in a Micronik tower.
But to spent another 420 euro on a Mediator board and a 120 for OS 4.1 ?
I really have to think hard on that one.

AROS for BPPC would be nice.

Absolutely, after all, who would want an OS that actually works?

No one! Productivity is overrated.

Yea! Welcome back. Purely an anecdotal observation, but I used to read threads about people leaving. Now I'm enjoying the ones in which people come back. Perhaps we're growing again, just a little.

Prometheus works probably better under OS 4 - certainly it's what I use and I think the OS4 dev team do too. Finding one may be tricky though... but a lot cheaper than 400-odd.

Thank you, looking forward to being in the scene again

Welcome back sicky :)
Hopes it's ok to ask some OS4 Classic questions here....
Do you need OS4.0 Classic installed first before you can install OS4.1 Classic?
Will OS4.1 Classic work with GFX cards like the Cybervision 64 and Picasso IV or must you have the Radeon card?
Thanks,
:pint:

As far as I know it's a standalone release.

You certainly need a Radeon card if you want to have fun with compositing. As for older cards, I can't say, only having tested it on BVision, but I can't see why any of the above legacy cards wouldn't work provided they had working P96 drivers to begin with. Perhaps someone with one of those cards can clarify.

For Amiga fun I suggest to keep yourself inside the Amiga68k/*UAE box, not outside.

I'd suggest the opposite instead, I find doing stuff for OS4 to be more fun.

Yep, I'd second that. I don't run a lot of legacy apps myself (in UAE or with OS friendly apps - directly).
There's some neat PPC specific software.

I guess Im confused how a real amiga with powerpc installed is less amiga than some PC from dell running an emulator

A PPC expansion card, as opposed to a PPC machine, is a hardware *extension* to the *Amiga*, and I'm guessing he wants to get the latter, for which reason I gave a suggestion. I wouldn't mind a PPC expansion (on a working 68k machine) to play around with, but I wouldn't even pay for that.
Regarding emulator, well, the emulator can run hardware banging programs/games/demos. It might be virtual, but that's Amiga to me; running Amiga software, including aforementioned hw banging ones is the deciding factor for me. If I'm to spend most my time in a *UAE box on top of PPC "amiga like" OS to get my Amiga needs then that PPC + OS is not an Amiga for me. For that reason I stick to any of the mainstream x86 "amiga unlike" OSs + *UAE for maximum amount of functionality, flexibility, apps and Amiga fun.

He has a good point. If your primary interest is legacy software then either run it on legacy hardware or use emulation. A PPC OS is a neat platform for carrying software development forward, but when running legacy software its not doing much more than an emulator.

Yes, it's OS4 I miss, I have OS 3.1 installed on my Mac running via EUAE
