Hi there,
Long time I've been here. Truth be told, didn't have much time for my Amigas lately.
I'd like to add TCP/IP networking to my Amiga 3000D. Currently, it has a Buster 7, I'll probably have to upgrade to a Buster 9 or 11.
Does anyone have any recommendation? I'd like a USB based option, if possible, as it would open me more solutions.
Thanks

The only good recommendation is to get a Deneb, imo...

So would that work with my current setup? Or would I need to upgrade to the newer Buster?
-
I've read conflicting things.
I currently use the Deneb, with Buster 7, in PIO mode without issue. Your mileage may vary :)
Amigakit states Buster 9 or 11 is necessary for DMA mode.
-
I would recommend a new buster for a Deneb. Then you could use Zorro III DMA mode and 100-BaseT ethernet.
However USB could eat a lot of system resources, what CPU & RAM do you have?
The cheapest solution would be a second hand Hydra Systems Amiganet Zorro II v1.0/v1.1 card and an AUI transceiver. People avoid them because they have no 10-BaseT connector but the AUI adapters are dirt cheap. Bonus is that no Buster upgrade is required.

I don't have much. I only have 6MB of RAM and the stock 25MHz CPU.
EDIT: So basically, a card like this:

And an adapter like this:

Right?

Right?
That'll do it.
Any other Zorro II Ethernet card should work, too.

I use a cheap $10 USB Ethernet adapter with a Deneb on my A4000. Works great.

I have an X-Surf 3 NIC I could sell you cheap $50.00 plus shipping. I'm also located in USA, NC when I'm not busy on the Moon.
-
AFAIK a Deneb does not work in DMA mode in a 3000 with onboard SCSI, regardless of Buster rev.
IMHO 100 or 10 Mbps Ethernet doesn't make too much of a difference, given the overall bus speed of a 3000 (some 11 MB/s).
A Deneb is an extremely versatile solution that offers a lot more than just cheap Ethernet - for a price.
I've got an A2065 Ethernet board (~$30 two years ago) and a generic twisted pair transceiver ($5) to avoid the cheapernet connector. Also got a PCI board (Prometheus) which I never got around to install and which would run a cheap/free 8029 PCI card.

I have a HydraNet ethernet board for sale With AUI adaptor and MiamiDX for sale if anyone is interested PM me
-
Thanks for your answers! :) I've sent PMs for more questions.

The X-surf has been spoken for so it's off the table now, just for all to know...

@goose
ahhh, postage from Moon must be astronomical anyway..

Hi All...
I just ordered a Deneb and it's on it's way.
Can someone tell me the exact model of a compatible USB ethernet adapter? Preferably one that is on newegg or amazon?
Thanks!

I have one in my A3000D, you will think it's the coolest thing...

How did you get the Deneb? Did you have to change the Buster chip? Or does it work pretty much out of the box? What's your specs? Cuz for now, I'm supposed to get the Hydranet from the other guy but he sent me the wrong card... (how can you do that exactly? :P)

DENEB on A3000 => don't mix ZIP Ram Mem manufacturer & speed! And Buster09 minimum (better with Buster11).

Me, I got it from AmigaKit. I had it working with the Buster 7 that came with my A3000D. But I eventually did upgrade to B11 (also from AmigaKit) and that has worked out fine too. I still run in the PIO mode, but it is still very functional for most things I do.
I use it for these functions now:
Swapping stuff from a PC
Internet
And I have a CDROM connected to it now.
The machine is AOS 3.1
It should work for you out of the box.

Just be sure you have MUI installed on your system beforehand. Lot's of great threads here regarding Deneb installs if something goes awry.

I got it off amazon too. here's one:
