The AGA threads kind of made me realize something:
I am going to try very hard to no longer view the amiga in comparison to other machines (PC's and Mac's at the time being the usual).
It's all pointless today, and we can all get lost in what could have been, never was and should have been done.
Starting today, the amiga, for me, will stand alone, on its own merits.
Whether AGA is better or worse than VGA is not important. Whether it should have had an HD floppy drive is irrelevant.
What matters is what the amiga can do, and what its makers chose to do with it.
And that will be my mantra for the year :)
Cheers!
Ivan

Yes I feel this way too.

I meant to add... what matters most is what WE decide to do with it

Ditto, though I still dream of a day when my A1200 will have it's own video card that will not require me to refit my entire system into a tower (My Atari 8-bit's have a couple, why can't my Amiga's?). That aside I'm loving my machine even with it's out of date AGA chip set, which still manages to impress me every now and then. ;)

Not sure about 2001, but I'll do my damnedest that 2011 will be :)
Sorry man, that shot was so cheap I had to take it

So, the Amiga only experience starts now? Are you going to blog it on here?
I had hoped a new browser would be about in time for you...
Does running mac stuff on your miggy count as cheating?
Anyway, goodluck dude!

It will not start 100% (and I need some web access for work that I'll need my linux box for) since I dont have a wireless card yet. But I am gearing up to start it for real within the next few days, as I am gathering up some manuals and other stuff :)
No mac stuff for me. No hate for apple or anything, just don't fit in my plans :)
I'll aim to do the blog on a weekly basis as I have new experiences. Not sure if all the posts will be long or not, but that's okay.

@ Runequester
That's the way I see it, as much as I'd love the Natami to appear I just don't understand why anyone wants to make their Amiga run PC or MAC style software or worse make their WorkBench look like a PC or MAC desktop...
The Amiga is what it is and to me the beauty of it is making the old girl do what she can with our given resources, fancy Workbenches with full colour screens and all that malarky, nah what's the point unless all you do is sit and stare at WorkBench all day... :)
At the end of the day it's all about getting the miggie to do what YOU want and being happy with it and learning something along the way... :)

true, was handy for me at uni back in the day (graphic design) though, as photoshop , illustrator and quark were all required for the course, and it saved me from buying a Mac (couldn't afford one anyway).
So I guess that was getting the Amiga to do what I wanted. And I still had access to lightwave, imagine, deluxe paint, photogenics, and all those lovely games!

While I too enjoy the classic amigas I cant share many of these sentiments. I see absolutely no harm in making Workbench easy on the eye. As Workbench *is* something a user spends a lot of time using I'd personally rather it look nice than low res, lacking color and ugly (having said that though I do get a kick out of seeing how nice a system I can make from limited resources, but for practical use the difference is like chalk and cheese). From the very beginning the amiga has had access to graphics cards, so the potential for eye candy has always been there, not to mention that an RTG based system is usually a more pleasant experience. Not essential, but it adds more to the experience than a faster processor as often as not (gimme '040+ rtg vs '060+ aga anyday for example). As for "PC or Mac style software", what exactly is that, and why wouldnt a person want to do something they might typically do elsewhere on an Amiga if they can? There's some very good software for other platforms as well and Id be happy to use them on my favorite system.
I do agree with using an Amiga the way a person wants to, but I dont agree that classic amiga and modern looking/modern software have to be different things all the time.

Here Here !
Each to their own and its worth is what it's worth.
The best way to look at anything in this world, not just Amigas. IMO.

i always have 'Treat amiga as its own beast' i like it rough like the aos3.1 look. the more chip ram that is free the harder boner i get :p anyway an a1200 indivision i would not mind of course. since the flybacks are dying like a plague on the old commodore monitors.

The amiga, for me, was about creativity.
I believe it still could be, but that means continued evolvement. Being frozen at a point in time isn't creativity, it's stagnation.
Apple continues to evolve, and admirably so. So OS X Lion will have a built-in app store, iPad style launch pad - lessons learned from the iPad, now migrating back to Mac OS X.
The Amiga had a unique value proposition - at one time it was custom chips, which produces quality results at a reasonable cost, it had multitasking when that wasn't yet standard. Arexx scripting, draggable screens, not every idea was invented at commodore, but they put together their own package, unique from Mac and IBM.
To me the Amiga would need to continue to evolve and have it's own unique experience - neither frozen in time nor mimicking entirely competitors - although a standards based web browser, is a nice mimic :)
well anyway, I haven't made any new years resolutions for 2011 in regards to amiga.
LOL good luck with that, and I wish everyone a prosperous year.

It's election year here, so it's not very likely. ;)

So there are purists and there are those who wanted the AmigaOS to go in a direction that suits them. It's times like that when you should split into a lite version and a bloated version. I guess a problem occurs when software writers want to take advantage of features only in the bloated version.
You could do two versions of your software, old style and new style. They did that for awhile when you could buy a DOS version or Windows version.
I notice everyone likes 3.1 but very few say they prefer 1.3. With every addition after 3.1 giving you a speed penalty or loss of RAM people separate into camps as to whether they like it or not.
If you remember people complained about having the OS on a rom because upgrading it was more bother that just installing the OS on the hard drive. Even then people were looking at the PC and Mac (and unix) and saying "Why can't we have what they've got."
Everyone here seems extremely content with their Amigas except OS4 users.
