Title: SCSI read/write errors
Post by: arttu80 on January 02, 2011, 05:53:24 PM
Hi all!

I have IBM DGHS09Y 9Gb SCSI (80 pin) drive connected to A590 with cable adapter. No matter what I try, I'm having problems with my hard drive. I managed to format it as 2Gb drive with two FFS Intl. partitions. Boot partition is less than 400Mb, second partition is 1.6Gb. I've used HDInstTools program from Aminet.

Formatting these partitions wasn't a problem, neither was copying files to them, no errors occured. Even booting from HD is ok to some point. The problem is, when I access disk from WB, both partitions give me read/write error -message,  despite this I manage to browse directories but can't run any larger files because of this error.
So, what's may be wrong with my setup?

Some of this disk parameters in HDInstTool are;

Cylinders 800
Blocks per Track 512
Heads 10
Block Size 512

The drive label look like this --->

This A590 is hooked to A1000 by the way, with KS.1.3

I hope somebody could help me with this.

Sometimes using 80 pin drives without high byte terminated adapters can cause troubles.Since you have small partitions under 4gb i would think you could get away with a cheap adapter.

Is the drive terminated properly?

did u set the jumper "Active term enable nar mode)???  seems u can jumper it for narrow mode with this(see your drive label)

bad cables have caused many a trouble,i would change it with a known good one just in case to see if it eliminated the troubles.

last resort, try one 2GB partition only.

Check that filesystem is capable of > 2 GB. And check termination, and diff/single-ended and bit-width.

also check the maxtransfer and the mask, these 2 are likely to cause read/write errors besides missing termination or dying harddrive.

plus you dont need to reformat the partition if you modify them !

Thanks ya'll good people! I Found the troublemaker here, jeah. Unbelievable, that completely good looking cable(s) can cause such a headache... Now my A1K flyes, a whopping 936Kb/s according to SysInfo and no read/write errors!
