Hey guys,
First let's start off with Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Happy Kwanza, and any other holiday around this time of year I don't know about!
I have been having this issue for a while now, and the gaming forums I've tried have offered limited assistance, all of which hasn't worked. I was refferred to this forum to see if it was potentially an OS issue, as the game's developers and distributors offer zero support for Windows 7.
After browsing around, I noticed that Win7 and Linux are touchy subjects around here, but somebody's bound to know something!
I have a digital copy of Mass Effect 1, purchased and downloaded from Steam. The game will run...if I have all year. The game is super slow: The opening BIOWARE splash screen will take 5 minutes to go by, the following EA screen will take the same amount of time. Then I get to the "Press Any Key" screen, and then 20-30 minutes later, I'll get to the Main Menu. An hour after that (These times are only SLIGHT exaggerations, I am merely rounding up), I will be able to load a game. If I take a month, I might be able to exit whatever room my character is in, but I haven't put that to the test yet.
I have tried "run as administrator", running Steam as administrator, reinstalling the game, rolling back to previous graphics drivers...
I used to be able to play this game at one point, but now the game is unplayable (hence why I tried an older graphic's driver), and I can't get a refund on the game (I don't think any PC game is refundable once opened, used, played, etc etc).
So If the good folks here can think of an Operating System angle to this problem, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks!
Jonah

The suggestions seems to either set the mass effect CPU affinity to single CPU or to disable all cores but one.
Google, isn't it amazing?

Piru, don't you ever stop?

What hardware are you running, if you do not mind me asking?

Ironically, my problems went away when installing a crack. Works like a charm now, as long as you don't tab out (in which case the described problem appears).

Also, trying to play it after coming out of sleep/suspend results in the similar problems it seems.
Did you try to set the CPU affinity for the game process?
-
Narh, I just run it in windowed mode instead. :)

I cut some slack for guys with thousands of posts, many answering questions
that at least should have been preceded by a search attempt, failed or otherwise.
I know a guy, who having failed finding a good answer, found it a revelation to
add -2009 -2008 -2007 -2006 etc, on a search for a 2010 event.
Ripening fruit of the international nanny state, and schools that indoctrinate
instead of educate.
Cheers, and Happy 2011 to the forum! :)

As far as I can see, the original poster - on his first post here - has come to Amiga.org to ask a pc question that he couldn't get answered on a pc forum - "I was refferred to this forum to see if it was potentially an OS issue". Erm, yes, but this is an Amiga forum that has nothing to do with the game, or the OS.
And we still found the answer :afro:
Merry Xmas all

Would this have been better?
