Any other retro hobbies you guys are into?
Old hifi stuff
Music instruments
Old music
Cars/motorcycles
tabletop games
old women
Old game consoles
Tell me what you got. Or even better, show me
-
Shoot - lots here!
Vintage and modern Hi-Fi. Audiophilia w/ a strong focus on LP's and SACD's. Classic/vintage gaming consoles and computers. Vintage arcade pinball and video arcade games. Vintage sci-fi mags. Tron memorabilia. Pac-Man memorabilia. 78rpm records and Victrola's. Antique radios and one old lady ;) lmao

Retro Video Games
Good parenting... Oh, uh, that wasn't what you meant was it... ;)

Having children certainly makes one feel retro, I can attest to that :D

I'm actually facinated by how many retro things my 6 year old is into. Crazy Legs Crane. Pink Panther. Populous on the Amiga. PacMan.
I actually bought him a Nes/Snes combo system for Christmas. I think he is going to love it.
-
This is one nice pinball room. I sure miss my pinball machine.

Ive been tempted to get a NES or sega for my kid when he gets a tiny bit older. SOmething a bit easier to manipulate for him (both controller and machine wise) and a lot of good kids games
-
@save2600: Wicked photos! :afro:
-
How old is he? My son started playing PacMan literally before he could walk. it was at about 7 months, and was able to clear a screen within a few weeks. Just get a controller that can handle a little chewing, and the worst that will happen is you will have a slobbery controller.
-
Old stamps, starting from 1856.
-
Laserdisc movies :)
There is nothing more retro than putting in big mirror discs the size of LP records containing half a film into a huge gigantic player that makes most video recorders from the 80s look compact!
Also anything from late 70s early 80s games wise (ie before Microsoft infected everything and ruined it forever haha)
-
No room for any retro hobby. But I love the steam era, muscle cars, history in general. I'd collect anything from swords to old radios if I had the room.
-
Vinyl collecting: old punk/goth industrial stuff.
Transformers (not all are retro though)
Zoids.
video games, although most of the machines were bought when current.
Vintage sciFi magazines and books.
-
I'm into old radio shows, from back in the 30's up to the 60s or so.... I've got about 26,000 tucked away on the hard drive. ;-)
-
Old game consoles
Yes.
old women
Old enough, yes. Just old, no !
-
Most of the things I do seems to get classed as retro, but to me it's just normal... :)
-
I got a few old receivers/amplifiers from the 70s and 80s - JVC, Technics, Fischer, Dual etc. It's not collecting, they're just cheap and nice.
@ save2600: You sure must have a large house :)
Merry Christmas to everyone!
-
I have a number of older game consoles, from the NES up to the Dreamcast, and a bunch of great games for them. I also have a Laserdisc player and a number of movies for it. And finally, a pretty sizable collection of LPs from a variety of genres, but mostly classic progressive rock (why have 25 square inches of, say, the Tarkus cover when you can have 144 square inches?)

I see a pair of clipsch and martin logans...
Do you by any chance have a pair of KEF ray.cookes model 105/3 you are willing to part with? Or know anyone willing to part with a pair?
As an answer to the tread. I am into HiFi, car audio, surround system.
Not so much retro HiFi these days, but i never pass on a chance of listening to a vacuum-tube amplifier(S) with a nice speaker setup.

I've actually never owned a pair of KEF's, although I've heard them before and they're nice for box speakers. Not normally into large/heavy boxes myself. I just have the Klipsch because they're made in America, uber efficient (98db senstive) and I used to have a single ended triode amp hooked to 'em for a while. Now, they're hooked to a 250wpc Margules down in the basement for my 'rockin' out' system. Can actually hear those over my drums - yay.
Only other boxes I care for are B&W and Thiel. Otherwise, I'm all about planar magnetic (Magnepan - made in White Bear Lake, MN) or true ESL speakers such as Martin Logan's (USA once again). For anyone that doesn't believe there's a big difference between analogue and digital or that analogue trumps digital in spades, try listening to a real set of loudspeakers someday. If your hearing is okay, you'll be amazed - err... floored by the difference. Those types of speakers are soooo much more revealing. So much so in fact, that I really couldn't take boxed designs seriously anymore. Not even Wilson's - and I've heard their $40k system. Not impressed.

Well, the story goes; once you go ESL you never go back.
I have never had the pleasure of listening to any ESL yet. :(
-

LOL! First time I heard 'em was back in the mid to late 80's as a teenager. Have been smitten ever since.
Say... I know space is usually at a premium over in Europa. Are those little Quad ESL's popular or readily available out by you? I know they're popular in the U.K.
-
My most retro "hobby" is my clothing... I've recently started wearing Georgian-style trousers with proper button-on braces ;)

In Norway ESLs are mostly "intended" for the rich and famous. :)
Or people with special interests.
The exact number is unknown, but it is not a great widespread use of ESLs here. By reading magazines you could probably count the owners on one or two hands.
And on a third count, they are rather expensive here.
(link (http://www.jfssoundsystems.no/subdet186.htm) to one retailer. in USD they would cost: $2 675
Very few people in Norway would spend so much on a pair of speakers. Not to mention the amplifier you need to drive those ESLs....)

It's all a matter of priorities and interest. For instance, I'd purchase a $40k set of transducers long before I'd spend that on a car. No doubt that's a minority view, even here in the States. Everyone I know that's an audiophile (quite a few actually) are quite down to earth (it's about the love of music afterall) and lead relatively modest, humble and conservative lives. Great group of people and we share many more of the same interests. That said, I'd love to get into boating and sailing someday.
I'm pretty good on the audiophile front these days. After decades of buying, selling, trading, modding and repairing the things, pretty content with my current setup. Best digital purchase I've made in a long time includes an Oppo BDP-83SE unit modded by NuForce. Awesome all around digital rig that handles Blu-Ray, DVD-A/V, SACD's, HDCD and redbook of course. Absolutely love that machine!
-
Well, I don't call it retro, but I like my old V-motored Americans! I mean '72 (5.7)and '86 (4.3) Chevy El Caminos, '77 Mercury Colony Park (7.5 liter) , '80 Trans Am Pontiac (5.0 liter). Oh boy, maybe I should get a Prius to be in the future?!
-
I have my Newton Messagepads and My VW Corrado:

photographing abandoned railroads
collecting classical music LPs
Don't really have space or $$$ for much retro stuff.
Cool pinball machines! I'd love to visit you if I could.
-
Vintage synthesizers.
-
Well, my stereo gear is 31 years old except the loudspeakers. DBX compander, MXR equalizer, Sony EL-7 Elcaset deck...

That's very cool. I picked up a pair of Maggies about 6 months ago (1.7s) hooked up to a Bryston 4B. Amazing sound indeed! The biggest reason I did this was that I was tired of getting ear fatigue with my old mission box speakers.
On topic: My retro hobbies include retro computing like Apple //s and Amigas and arcade games. I have a full standing MAME arcade cabinet in my den that is a work in progress.
My other retro passion is my 87 Scirocco 16v:

A Bryston 4B drives my ML Ascent's. Best bang for the buck I've found to date :)

Vintage synthesizers.
Ooh, nice. Are we talking Minimoog-era here, or somewhat newer?
-
Anything with a good heavy DC amp and ultra low distortion.
Oh, and old Arcade Ms. Pacman and Galaga machines.
And hard rock/heavy metal.

Rocco is sweet ! I'm working on a Jetta MKII coupe. Got a 2.0 ABA long block going in it.
-
I collect the de-orbit engines from spacecraft. ;-)
-
I forage for nuts and berries and from time to time I like to chase a mastodon off a high cliff in preparation for my dinner.
Other than that, I like collecting old Honda motorcycles, vintage radios, toy trains and ancient civilizations.

I was active in the world of audio (and video). but now savings is spent on weapons and its accessories... :D
And some computer parts.
When i get my own home, audio and video will get back some of its priorities.

I play original (1974) and Advanced (1978) Dungeons & Dragons - the ones that Gary Gygax wrote. I've got stacks upon stacks of books for AD&D (some of them autographed by the Man himself, may he rest peacefully), many duplicates, and copies many times over of the OD&D booklets (also one set of those autographed).
2nd Edition was a wimpy neutering of the guts-n-gore of the predecessors and characters in 3, 3.5 and 4 might as well wear blue tights, a red cape and sport an "S" on their chests.

Big RPG fan here. As my name implies, "my game" was always Runequest, but we play Rolemaster, AD&D (and I agree that the original AD&D is the way to go), Traveller and plenty of others.
Big fan of the original Warzone and Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader mini's games too.

Yes, Minimoog-era and also somewhat newer. In fact, I have a Minitmoog (yes, the 't' belongs there). It is very rare, but not so sought after, because it is far more limited than the Minimoog and most other Moogs that were produced in larger numbers. In addition to analogs, I have vintage digital, such as the Kurzweil 250, a high-end sampler that was released around 1983 for about $20K. (Thank goodness I didn't have the money to buy it back then.)
-
I'm just getting into it, but I have an interest in antique radios.

It's scary how much of my hobbies match a few others...
Besides retroputing, I also collect way too many video games:
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2038122&id=1170907465&l=e20c3c98b9
I used to collect antique radios, and will again when I have time, but I also do a lot of shortwave/mediumwave DXing on a handful of radios (Grundig Satellit 750, Realistic DX 390, Yaseu 707GX, some others).
I collect arcade machines, but I don't have much room for them (Altered Beast, Gondomania/Aero Fighters, D&D Tower of Doom/Mag Max, Super Mario Bros/Dr. Mario) so in the garage they sit next to my current hobby:

My '66 Mustang I'm rebuilding.

Yeah..
Vintage Cars (VW`s Air cooled) , MiniBikes, Honda ST70`s (DAX), Z50`s, Monkey-- Vintage Drums Set`s, some old Handheld games, Commodore 8Bit, and obviusly Amiga Stuff..
I see some VW "colleagues" -- Cool!. For that guys... I own VW Type 3 Notchback 64`, Super Beetle 74`, Rabbit Cabriolet 82` -- and owned many others Type 1 -- Bugs and Beetle.
I would like to have more, but for all this required many time, money and space.. then for now I'm just taking what I use and have appropriate space.. Thats important.

Mmm, sweetness. I've never gotten to play around with real analog synths, but I've had a lot of fun with the G-Force Minimonsta Minimoog VST. Fun stuff.
-
The pre-60's idea of womanhood, parenthood, and being a gentleman.
Atari 8-bit
DOOM Editing
Classic Game Consoles, especially classic Atari, Sega, Nintendo, and Neo-Geo.
Ancient scripture from Yeshua's (Jesus) era on back.
Mysticism (we're all too mental now a days and it shows, so much for the age of reason).
Musick, I go all the way back.
Movies. I don't know what I'd do without Tuner Movie Classics
Pre-history, Yes there is so much that we do not know and should not presume to know.
T classic Star Wars canon. Screw the sequels (except in book form), screw making Force Unleashed part of canon (fun game though) and screw The Clone Wars TV series. Crap crap crap!
Um...
...there's more, much more, but these are my personal highlights.

Excellent; do you cast around any RPG forums? I have one, and Knights & Knaves alehouse is another great one, and of course The RPG Site...oh, can't forget Dragonsfoot.
Also: much love for Rolemaster (aka Rulemaster/Rollmaster/Rulebastard :D ). Not my first game of choice but I've had much fun with that one too.
Also also: 1e Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play!

I used to hang out at rpg.net and dragonsfoot but its been a while.
WFRP is awesome. I ended up selling my 2nd edition books. It might be better designed than 1st edition but the original book is just so damn inspirational
-
Old cars myself. Currently working on one as shown in my avatar. Also a late model Jeep, but it's younger than my Amiga.

Isn't it, though?
I asked for a 1e WHFRP book a couple years back for Christmas, and I expected to get a softback Hogshead copy/edition. I got an original Hardback in near mint condition Games Workshop copy.
The wife went a-browsing and found one on addall used books for $50, figured "Oh it's Christmas, what the heck" and bought. :D

Very nice :) My current copy is the Hogshead one. Would love to have the GW version, especially in hardback.
Was always a bigger fan of the 1st edition combat system and the criticals :rtfm:

Yeah, there were some ground rules to set before bringing "the beast" (in the avatar) home to restore. Other items had to go like the restored arcades I had and old PC stuff. The Jeep is a little different. I had it towed home, rebuilt the engine and have since been driving it daily while restoring the rest of it. The Amigas... they stay.
