Title: Which Amiga magazine did you buy?
Post by: nedsir on December 21, 2010, 12:25:19 PM
Just out of interest which Amiga magazine did you buy, and why? I bought CU Amiga which was excellent. Bought Format a few times but not as good as CU Amiga in my opinion.:)

When I was in my early teens I loved Amiga Power - the attitude of the writing, the focus on games, and the cool coverdisks.

When I got a bit older (and AP became a shadow of its former self) I moved to Amiga Format for a bit, then eventually got a subscription to CU Amiga. This was by far the best in terms of quality, content and the amazing CUCDs.

I really miss those magazines

In the early 90's, I had subscriptions to the following:
Amiga Format
Amiga Shopper
CU Amiga

I used to also buy (but not all the time):
The One Amiga
Amiga Power

The last magazine I bought regularly was Amiga Active.

Every issue of the following and I mean every issue... :)

Amiga Format
Amiga Computing
Amiga Shopper
Amiga User International
CU Amiga

At the height of Amiga mags in the mid 1990s it was costing me nearly 40 quid a month in magazines alone...

The hardest ones to get hold of were the Amiga User International mags when Robert Maxwell took over and all the money took a tumble along with him when he fell of his yacht and went down to Davie Jones locker... :)

Tricky, the only thing you could do there is use the "ignore" feature, but it's kinda draconian. How about locating the image in your browser cache and replacing it with a picture of a fluffy bunny?

I loved AUI, it taught me a lot about programming in 68K and they even gave away special crib cards with every Guru Meditation on them... :)

Sorry bout the avatar... I'll try and find something to give you your 250 pixels back... :)

Amiga Format and CU Amiga, mostly because it was what Real Amigan (tm) was supposed to do at that time. Never read them properly, though.

Import magazines in Australia were expensive as heck, so I stuck to Australian Commodore Amiga Review... I remember getting some ZZap issues and some C+VG and some CU, mostly brit mags, very few american mags, but faithfully ACAR...

I'd bought Amazing computer Amiga and Awiga World magazines. It's sad that the magazines just dropped off with no closing statement leaving users hanging. They both were good works.

I have the last edition of CU Amiga which had the front cover printed upside down as a bit of a prank. But there was no warning to it's going pre this. But I know one of the team brought out Amiga Advice or something like this. But it folded not long after. I really looked forward to CU Amiga arriving through my letter box each month. Good thoughts. I actually notice that Nick Veitch of Format and CU Amiga went on to work for PC Answers but it too has since folded.

It really was a shock. Mind you, I think it's better for them to go out on a high than to let the magazine shrink away to a stapled leaflet like Amiga Power. ISTR CU printing words to that effect in the last issue.

That's correct they wanted to end on a high and they did. In fact I think they released some heavy duty software stuff on the last disk. Talking of the disks they gave away SCALA 100MM free which was a fantastic piece of software.

I had a subscription to Amiga Format, and would buy other mags, AUI, CU Amiga and Amiga computing as and when they had something I was interested in, in them... My friend had a subscription to Amiga Power so I don't think I ever bought a copy.

CU gave away some amazing software. Here's a link to the last ever issue:

Not their best CUCD TBH, but then they were probably more focussed on making the last issue

Well... they were unsold and sitting outside the shop in a metal box waiting to be picked up and returned to source I think.

When a mate told me there were Amiga magazines sitting outside the local shop I was 100% convinced he was taking the piss (seeing as CU and AF had closed).

Imagine my surprise!!

+1 for AUI. Some of their screenshots were also a bit risqué which other mags wouldn't show. Their cover disks were great - 984K on the second disk with diskspare on the first, quotes were like "6
MBs worth of software on 2 disks!" This was the only mag I could reliably get from the local newsagent!

I had the same reaction when I wandered into a local news agent to buy a snack. I casually looked over over the computer section of the magazines and there it was, issue 1 of Amiga Active.

I hadn't even heard of it at that point as I wasn't really keeping up with what was going on (even though I was using my machine daily, I wasn't online). I practically had to rub my eyes.

So, naturally I bought it :)

I was an avid AmigaWorld reader. In fact, I'm currently reading all of the back issues now thanks to the folks over at bombjack.org.

It's weird reading these issues. I find myself remembering the articles and ads even though it's been 15+ years since I read them. It makes me miss the Amiga even more. :(

+1 for Amiga Active. It had good editorial even though events in the Amiga's life were pretty gloomy.

Back in the good old days I liked Amiga Shopper closely followed by Amiga Format.

I mostly read three magazines: Amiga Magazin (German), Amiga Magazine (Dutch, bimonthly issues) and Amiga Shopper (English).

I really disliked most English or American Amiga magazines (the same goes for C64/128 magazines, for that matter), as I found most of them focussing far to much on the gaming side of the Amiga (or the C64 before that) and often ignoring the rest.

I liked German computer magazines (still do), having a good mix of hardware- and softwaretests, programming, hardware hacking, articles for both beginners and insiders. Most Dutch magazines relating to the C64 or the Amiga were utter crap, apart for Amiga Magazine, a (still) highly readable magazine.

Atm, I have all issues of Amiga Magazin (Dutch), quite some issues of Amiga Magazin (German), but unfortunately only a couple of issues of Amiga Shopper. Hope to find more somewhere in the not to distant future.

CU Amiga
Amiga Format

It really sucked those months when they both had the same demo games on the cover floppy.

Occasionally I would get an Amiga Power and The One Amiga (I'd get a pile of magazines at Christmas). What others were there in the UK?

I subscribed to AmigaWorld (on and off, mostly on) all through the late 80's to mid 90's. Besides AmigaWorld, I'd purchase the random Info, Amiga Transactor or Amazing Computing from time to time. Really though, for my money, I really enjoyed AmigaWorld best. Still do. Amazing Computing, while there may be some great tech stuff here and there, was rather drab for an Amiga magazine. I liked the formatting (along with the color, ads and paper quality) of AmigaWorld much better.

In the early to mid 90's, some of our bookstores and video game boutiques were getting foreign Amiga mags. I remember Amiga Format and their cover disks real well. $10 or more a pop though, so pretty pricey. I remember thinking the foreign Amiga mags looked too "busy" and cartoonish for my tastes, but they were fun for what they were - the 11x14 behemoths! lol   I've only seen a mag or two from a few of the different foreign mags, so can't really comment any further, 'cept they seemed to be heavily centered on gaming. Was my impression anyway. I have drawers full of AF and CU coverdisks I got in on trade a while back. Should really see what they're all about one of these days. I've got disks from all these mags:

Amiga Format
Amiga CU
Amiga Magazine
Amiga Shopper

...it'd be nice if someone came up with a complete listing of all Amiga mags in publication and where they were from at one time. I'm curious to see all the British and European 'zines that were around. Any from Australia or New Zealand? Okay, I'll start with all the ones I'm aware of in North America:

Didn't usually read many exclusively Amiga focused magazines. The magazines I used to read during the years I had my classics were:

 * Datormagazin (Swedish; focused a lot on the various Commodore products until the demise of Amiga forced them over to the dark side)
 * Norsk DatorMagazin (short-lived Norwegian version of DatorMagazin - even had a short article printed in it)
 * Commodore Computing International
 * IC/Run (Danish; mostly Commodore/Amiga focused during the time I read it)

I did occasionally buy Amiga Format, Amiga Shopper and CU Amiga as well, but most of these magazines seemed too games focused for me (CCI sort of was too, but I started reading it in my C64 days when my interests were more oriented towards the games). Also a few issues of Compute's Gazette and Run.

British and US magazines are/were extremely expensive in Norway where I grew up (often 2-3 times as expensive as they'd be in their home markets), so I couldn't buy all that many of them. The only other computer magazine I've ever bought with any regularity has been the now defunkt Dr Dobbs Journal (the website still lives, but in its glory years it was *the* software developer magazine)...

Oh man. You got me all teary eyed again.

I bought CU Amiga every issue that was available here in the Netherlands (and let me tell you, each issue cost an arm and a leg back then, but still worth every body part). I also bought Amiga Format when I had some extra cash. Them coverdisks, them coverdisks. Sigh....... I also remember skipping school one day somewhere around 1991/1992 and reading a stack of CU Amiga's all day a couple of blocks away from high school in the summer sun.

Amiga Format - MUCH preferred it to CU Amiga, just my opnion. However I liked both magazines and subscribed to them from very early on.

Sadly about 8 years ago I found myself homeless and in need of cash, lived with a friend for 6 months and had to get rid of the magazines, couldn't store them any longer.  Sold all the cover CDs on Ebay- my entire collection of EVERY Amiga Format, CU Amiga cover CD - not a single one missing, including the infamous CU Amiga TFX for AGA machines-scoop CD and a couple of CD32 games.  Makes me cry just to think about it.  Wish I never had parted with them now...I have a WinUAE monster-PC to use them on.

Ah well...

I'm with you on that one. When we started carrying UK mags at the store, I thought their layout was poor... sort of "fannish". Took a little while to get used to UK English vs American English. ;-)

Thanks JimS and Motorollin' - wow... almost forgot about Amiga Sentry, AmigoTimes, Antic's Amiga and Jumpdisk. I bought some of those disks too back in the day. $7-$10 they were, with coverdisks, but boy where they cool. Was a lot of fun checking out the various games and utilities back then. Back then, I thought the cost was a little prohibitive ($50-$70 for a mag subscription with coverdisks), but thinking about it today, there was a lot of value in 'em. AmigaWorld without any disks of course, was always around the $30-$35 a year range. Comparatively, mags were more expensive back then. Seems to me, the 1 or 2 I get today (Stereophile being one of them) only cost $10-$20 a year. Probably one of the reasons I value my old mags so much, besides the fact they're either Amiga, C=64 or vintage arcade/console mags  :)

Cool thread! I've always thought any kind of vintage/classic literature, mags with reviews, ads, programs, tips/tricks and videos are the perfect companions to our machines. Owning the machine w/ a smattering of software is not enough IMO. Mags and books totally complete the nostalgia and take you back to better times, if only for a short while.

CU Amiga until it finished
Amiga Format until the same happened (tbh I never really rated it compared to CU, but it was at the time the only option)
Finally, every AmigaActive that ever got released until, as with CU, it went down the gurgler (cheers merlancia).

I also had a couple of Amiga Power iirc.

I passed them onto Rockape when I scrapped my Amiga gear.

Still got the July 1998 copy of CU however "Amiga drops the bombshell" with the big article on BeOS. I thought I still had the last ever edition as well, but it seems that one went. Pity.

I was a subscriber to Amiga Format and Cu Amiga. I bought Amiga Action when I was younger for the games and coverdisk demos and the odd Amiga Force etc depending on what was in the issue.

I miss the mainstream Amiga Magazines. Back then, I never thought that they wouldn't be around forever. :(

"Pixel" an Amiga oriented greek magazine (for many years),  Amiga Shopper, Enigma Amiga Run (with CD included!) and lately Bitplane Magazine.
That's all I think..

I think the prices of those magazines has a lot to do with advertising and circulation... Look at say, Popular Science today compared to an electronics hobbyist magazine like Nuts & Volts or Elektor.

One thing we really need is a huge cross-reference index to all those Amiga magazines. I have a couple swiped off the web to AmigaWorld & Amazing, but that's about it. I should think about OCRing the contents pages of all those scanned issues out there on the TerraBook.

I have every issue of Amiga World and almost every issue of Amiga Format.  I also have many issues of CU Amiga magazine.

by far THE best Amiga magazine (non-games) EVER.. sadly took them all to the skip around 1999 ... I still can hit myself for doing so... :/

CU Amiga was my first main magazine and monthly purchase :)

I also bought AF, and later Amiga Active...

I loved CU for its technical articles and styles of writing and generally everything about it! When Tony Horgan took over as editor, I really think the magazine was in its prime. It's just a shame the declining Amiga market wasn't :(

Just out of interest which Amiga magazine did you buy, and why? I bought CU Amiga which was excellent. Bought Format a few times but not as good as CU Amiga in my opinion.:)

I have a few issues of each of these British mags (I'm not sure if any are American though..):

Amiga Power
Amiga Action
Amiga Format
CU Amiga
The One Amiga  (edit: just added, saw it mentioned and remembered)

Swedish mags:

Subscribed Datormagazin. Have about 1+ dozen issues of Svenska Hemdator Nytt (this wasn't amiga exclusive but I wonder if I didn't like this better than Datormagazin). Bought a first issue of Amiga Världen, and wondered why they canceled the mag after the first issue (never saw it again in the store). Years later noticed a small section in one of the last pages in the mag where it was written that the next issues will be subscription-only... :drink:

I just liked them all, for no other reason than the obvious.

There's a good list on AMR:

http://amr.abime.net/magazines

That's a cool site!  I should go through my stacks to see if I can find some stuff they don't have.  I think I still have AmigoTimes 1.1 and 1.10, for example, and some other issues of that mag that they are missing cover photos or stats for.

I never subscribed to any computer magazines, but the magazines I used to frequently pick up were Amiga World and Amazing Computing at first, then Amiga User International for a while after I first started finding it on the racks, then Amiga Format.

In post-Commodore days, one of the best mags was Amiga News (French), IMHO, but I only bought a few issues.  All of the imported mags were too expensive to buy on a regular basis.

Wish it was so. They were trying to make themselves more of a "serious" computer magazine.

Hi sorry to hear you were homeless hope you are sorted now all the best to you:)
Hi there,

That's very kind of you!  Yes I'm certainly OK now, happily mortgaged up to the hilt and married ;P.  I left home at 15 and it was a tough time for a while.  A lot of my things like magazines and old computers (my beloved Atari 800XL!) were left behind and thrown out before I could arrange to find somewhere to store them.

These days I love just messing about with anything Amiga - WinUAE mostly, but I also dabble with other OS's (I have an Intel Mac Mini too) and also AROS stuff from time to time.  In my loft, and probably no longer working (I haven't checked for maybe 7 years!) is an A1200 with Blizzard 1230 IV running at 30MHz and SCSI extender with an old Mac external CD-ROM 8x speed....blimey that was the BUSINESS when I bought it!

The magazines were great, for me, because of the mix between AREXX / programming / fun features / games reviews / cover discs-content to play with.  PC Format and more modern PC magazines just don't seem to have the same decent balance.  I followed Linux Format for a while, when Amiga Format ended.  It was interesting to see Nick Vietch and some of the other journos move over and make a go of it, and it still feels a little "Amiga"ry in terms of layout and style.

But it's no replacement for the originals.

I bought Amiga Format the most.  Only missed the first 3 issues if I recall.  Still have virtually a complete set with all coverdisks and CDs.

I also bought the US magazine Amiga World for about two years until it folded.

I bought Amiga User International until it stopped also.

I then bought AmigaActive until it converted into a digital media magazine (I think that only lasted one issue).

Periodically if I liked the coverdisk, I bought Amiga Computing, Amiga Shopper, Amiga Power, The One, various others who's names I forget.

Oh, and I bought every issue of CD32 gamer despite not having a CD32!  (I planned to get one but never did)

I still have every one of these magazines, and occasionally pick one out to read.  They should bring happy memories, but sadly I feel a great sense of mourning sometimes.

does anyone buy the amiga future?

I am currently a subscriber of Amiga Future, but I wasn´t two years ago. I liked Amiga Magazin (and their "Hermann der User"-Comic) but I also loved Amiga Welt and Kickstart. AmigaDos and later Amiga Spezial were nice additions. I dumped a lot of my old magazines during my Non-Amiga-Years (1995-2008)*... hmm, I should shorten this to NAY in the future.

I re-bought some of them later. The late 80s / eraly 90s were a great time and worth remembering.

Oh, and do you remember PowerPlay? The guys are having a podcast now: "Spieleveteranen"

I remember when I fist got my Amiga each month a tired a different mag, Amiga Format first, then CU Amiga, Amiga Shopper and then Amiga Power, in the end I picked Amiga Format as i think it did have the perfect balance of covering all areas of Amiga. I subscribe from I think around issue 80 up till the end, very sad when it did go. I also got every issue of Amiga Active as I was really looking forward to the AmigaMCC, but as we know that never happened. So when Amiga Active finally ended, I was very sad not having a monthly mag, I think its a big reason I stop following the Amiga scene as much in around 2003 to 2009, I recently subscribe to Amiga Future as it was the least I could do after winning their mouse mat in the Amigaworld competitions and the fact i wanted more news on the new AmigaONE i'm surprised by how good it is, wish i got them a lot earlier.

One good thing however is when I went to get my second hand Amiga Power Tower in 99 the guy who sold it to me had nearly
every single issue of Cu amiga and loads of Amiga shopper, CD32 Gamer, all the early Amiga Format mags up to around issue 40, even the ST/Amiga format mags all in great condition! He actually said the reason he gave up on the Amiga dream was because of the closer of CU Amiga, so gave them all to me.(the car was weighed down that day!)  I kind of knew what he meant when Amiga Active closed.

I felt exactly the same the day CU died. It really was at that exact moment that I realised the Amiga wasn't coming back

...it'd be nice if someone came up with a complete listing of all Amiga mags in publication and where they were from at one time.

you mean like:

http://amr.abime.net/
http://www.magazines.ch/index.html
http://www.amigahistory.co.uk/magazines.html

or even

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Amiga_magazines

whoops, missed the other links already mentioned in this thread. sorry.

out of all the magazines I've read my all-time favorite was probably CU Amiga, especially in its glory days. The One and Amiga Power were a lot of fun, too, and I couldnt resist reading Amiga Format either. Last mags I bought were Amiga Active and a few issues of Amiga Future. Oh I almost forgot about the Dutch 'Amiga Magazine'.
