Post by: amiganer2000 on December 21, 2010, 08:32:59 AM
Hello !

I have recently bough a A2000, i would need some help to upgrade the system ( Software ) since its so long time ago, i dont remember much anymore !

Here my specs :

A 2000 with original keyboard and mouse

1084 Screen and a 1960 Screen

I found follwing Expansion Cards in my A2000

A2320 Graphics card
Impact A2000-030 Combo without any memory sadly ( i believe its the 50mhz version with FPU
DKB Multistart II with 3 rom slots ( 2 filled )
A SCSI Controler with a 100MB HDD
2 x 3.5 Floppy drives both functional

Everything is in excellent condition and function, the HDD is partioned in 4 pcs of 25 MB ( DH0-3)

OS installed on the HDD is :
Kickstart V. 37.175
Workbench 34.20

Now my questions :

What is the highest OS i can install, is there a how to somewhere ?
Can i use my PC to format and transfer Disks or any other way to get data on the Amiga ?

I was using 3D software back then, i believe it was called Lightwave, i remember it was taking 2 days to render 1 pic but it was so exciting ! I want to do it again !

I appreciate any answer ! I look forward to get active here !

TY for having me !

The newest official OS is 3.9.  There is a new copy on EBay right now with the bidding at $25.  It only comes on CD so the first thing I would get for your A2000 if I were you would be either an external or internal SCSI CD-ROM drive.  Are you going to use the SCSI on your Combo card or the seperate SCSI controller you mentioned?  The 100mb harddrive is also very small so I would get maybe a 4gb one.  They are relatively inexpensive these days.

Do you need to have drivers for your CD -ROM?

Nice system possibilities.  Upgrading the OS is probably the next logical step, but, it can be complicated on the 2000.  You can install a newer kickstart rom on the motherboard.  You may, however, need to also upgrade the rom chip on the card you choose to drive your SCSI harddrive and CDrom to get the system to boot.  This additional rom is not usually expensive.  There are ppl here who remember the specifics of this better than me.

OS3.9 was designed for higher spec Amigas (those with 32-bit acceleration, some fast ram, and especially, retargetable graphics, required for the non-standard icon display engine).  Adding a Picasso II graphics card (especially true as you already have a flicker fixer) would also be a logical upgrade for your system to make all of this work and a real sweet system.  That said, there seems to be many ppl here who have run 3.9 with ECS standard graphics (and older 16-bit CPUs and fast ram).  I don't know how they did it, but I think it was labor intensive to replace all the icons.

Your system, as it's currently configured, might be ideally suited to OS3.1, many ppl believe it the most pure choice, anyway.  It can be enhanced and tweaked with selected elements of 3.9 (and 3.5).   Operating Sytem3.1, OS3.5, and OS3.9 work well with,  and need, kickstart rom 3.1 installed on the motherboard.
