Well, I pulled the 3.0 ROMS from my A1200 project to clean up the motherboard and when I went to install the 3.1 ROMS I wish I paid more attention to how the old ones sat. Each of the chips has a half circular notch at one side. Does this notch sit towards the PCMCIA side of the motherboard? Also, there are more holes in the socket than pins on the chips. On which side are the holes left empty?
Thank you for your help and for putting up with my gung-ho-ness (stupidity) :D

Looking at the machine from above, the chips should be right aligned in their sockets (which have one pin pair more than the ROMs do) with the semi circular notches on the left (ie facing the PCMCIA slot).

The notch orientation is also silkscreened onto the motherboard.
Edit...As kindly demonstrated by Karlos above :)

What you don't want to do is install them this way:

Thanks guys. A great help as always. Just out of interest, do we know who snaped the ROM chip in that picture? It must have been done on purpose, surely?
And most importantly of all, what is with the avatars? I've missed something.

No, I think it broke due to overheating resulting from being installed the wrong way round.

I'm not 100% sure myself, even though I managed to get roped into it

I can't say any more, I'll be accused of being all off-topic and not taking stuff seriously enough.

Karlos' avatar looks like Jason Statham, and motorollin's looks like Timothy McVeigh.

Hey motorollin, where have you been? I haven't seen you post on here in a while.

I've been lurking for a while, mostly been really busy with my new job. The lure of The Org drags us all back eventually...
