Title: Snow in Helsinki
Post by: Piru on December 11, 2010, 08:58:27 PM
Winter is a dark and rainy time in Helsinki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helsinki) (southern finland). Or at least it was until recently. Last couple of years have been totally different: The whole city has been literally drowning in snow. Currently we have more than 54cm (23 in) of it.

I decided to take some photos, and here they are:

Amazingly for example public transport works, though with small delays. Personally I prefer this proper winter over the darkness and rain.

Substitute "Helsinki" with "Manchester" and you have the same story. Except our snow lasted a week and now it's all gone again :(

Found some stats:

Last time Helsinki had almost as much snow was in 1965 (52 cm).
The all time record of 70cm (27.5 in) is from 1915.

Yeah, the global warming is shutting down the north-atlantic current, allowing Siberian winds to swoop down over the Nordic countries. What will YOU do the day after tomorrow?

My youngest brother lives in western NY right in the lake-effects snow belt they have hit 36" already. I got about 8" or so here in  south-east NY. I don't think I'd mind darkness and rain as much as snow.

We got about 20 cm snow the other day....nothing special. :) It's just a matter of stepping harder on the pedal to get from A to B.

Location: Norway

Snow in Helsinki?  Isn't that like coal in Newcastle?

If you mean Newcastle upon Tyne here in the UK, then not necessarily. That industry is pretty much dead.

Of course, I guess you might mean it's namesake in NSW...

Nah, climatologists call it "climate change", politicians call it "global warming".

We call it "winter".
