Title: A1200 CD Rom Questions
Post by: NAVVARR on December 09, 2010, 09:04:00 AM
I've got an A1200 with a Blizzard 1240 accelerator with a 128 meg sim.

I used to use it with a CD-Rom drive connected through an IDE splitter.

Anyway, my CD Rom unit failed recently and I bought a new one.

I've also recently reinstalled Workbench 3.0 and also reinstalled my registered copy of IDEFix97- but the CD Rom is playing up- it works for about 2 mins- then gets glitchy- it doesn't seem to read the discs when I put them in.

I've now reordered a new CD Rom,- s Samsung SCR-3232 -since its the most similar I could find to my original- but does this really matter? -will any CD-Rom work with my A1200 with IDE Fix?

-also, I seem to have to include an entry into my A1200's start up sequence- its asking me to put IDEfix or LoadIDE reset behind setpatch in the start-up sequence...

-how do I edit the start up sequence?? -i've done it before- years ago, but I really can't remember - it would be great to get my A1200 back up and running and get some old classics like Genetic Species and T-Zero running again.

-one more question- when I receive my replacement CDrom drive- do I set it as master, or slave?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out on here...

Any ATAPI-compliant CD/DVD+/-ROM/R/RW/RAM drive should work. However, different manufacturers have different opinions about what "compliant" might mean.

It should do this automatically. Do you have a key for IDEfix97 or do you use an OEM version? If you have a key, get the latest version from Aminet and install that. It does the startup-sequence change automatically.

Load it into a text editor of your choice.

The most primitive text editor is Ed, but it's the one which comes with Workbench. Open a shell window and enter

ed s:startup-sequence

To save changes press Esc and enter x. To quit the editor without saving, press Esc and enter q. To delete an entire line press Ctrl-B.

Check the one which died and set the new one to the same as the old one.

The usual rule is: set the drive as master if it is the only one on the channel, set it to slave if there is another drive on the same channel which is master. There may be only one master and one slave on one channel. Which one is master and which one is slave does not matter.

A usual IDE controller has only one channel, but with the 4-way adapter you get two channels. Remember that the 2.5" connector and one of the 3.5" connectors share the same channel.

Run PC0 from Storage/DosDrivers. Insert an empty DD floppy disk into the internal drive. Open a shell window and enter

format drive pc0: name empty noicons

This should create a 720K floppy disk which can be accessed by both the PC and the Amiga.
