Somewhat like alcoholics anonymous I'm coming out here that I can't stop browsing ebay for retro machines I used to own or have used in my teenage years.
In my collection I have two Amigas currently but am looking for more "bargains" on ebay where the original owners don't know the gems they are selling.
How the heck do I stop this addiction? I don't have the room in the house (actually correction - I don't have room to display machines) and barely have time to use the Amigas I have at the moment at all (maybe once a fortnight for a game or two). In all seriousness I feel it's the starting of hoarding and I actually detest keeping stuff I class as junk because I am a reasonably tidy person - and I don't see old low end Amigas as junk, just as machines with potential.
Of course putting this message on here might just be like asking a load of rabid drunks how to quit drinking...

I know the thing
I just picked up intrest in the beginning of 2010, had 2 Amiga 500's, googled a bit found this site, Amibay, Amigascene.nl and lots of others, started reading on WHDLoad.
:hammer:
WHDLoad ha ? Ok requiers an Amiga 1200, no problem, marketplace, search, ok found one locally.
Needs a Blizzard 1230, search, found on Ebay.
Hmm, I like a second Amiga 1200 for my father so he can play Frontier.
Mad_cat provides me an A1200 with Mtec @ 28Mhz and 8MB.
My first contact with CF drive.
I want more, searching for A2000/3000/4000, bought an A4000, a month later an A4000 Micronik, a month later an A4000 almost for free.
Also various A2000's.
Score on an GVP A530.
Getting a few A500/600's.
Big fat score on a local sale with various CD32's and a SX32MKII, keyboards and again 2 A2000's.
Score on an Amiga 1000 with DKB insider, so 2MB memory in total.
Another few A2000's even with GVP Combo.
The holy grail, Cyberstorm 060/PPC 50/200 with 128MB and already had a Vision card.
Took McVenco's A2500 recently, nice little machine which has the GVP Combo 030.
And most recent, 3 A500's, one plus and one rev 8A, not plus, but can be upgraded and a 6A and best of all BSC/Alfadata Alfapower IDE for A500.
I'd like to stop, but I think I can't untill I have an A3000D and T and A4000T and CDTV :roflmao:
But I'm already getting room shortage yeah and it costs a fortune and I'm not the biggest collector here, there are people with far more machines and lots more exotic things.

Heh. I don't have a problem with hoarding multiples of the same kind of machines, but when it comes to different architectures...well, I've got an Amiga, a Mac, a 286 PC, a Tandy, an MSX, and that's not even counting the half-dozen game consoles I own...
And I'm gleefully unapologetic about it! ;)

@ brownb2
Hic, whadya mean we're like alchyfrolics... :drink:
Once an Amiga Junky always an Amiga Junky, no matter how long you've stayed clean one day you have to give in to temptation and shoot up with another load of gear that the pushers on ebay tempt you with... :nervous:
I too am tidy, I arrange all my Amiga stuff in neat rows carefully spaced apart all over the house (including the loo)... :)
Just off to rob some old grannie to get some cash for me latest fix... :insane:

Consoles haven't hit me yet, but PS3 with GT5 is really getting a serious thought and Xbox with Forza, hmm :roflmao:.
My PC isn't a little one too, I just waited for the new Radeon 6000 series and the only thing I have to do is get a top end card of the 6000 series and my PC will be up to the task for even the most demanding games.
It's a Core I7 975 with 6GB.
I hope I win the new year lottery
-
I was pretty bad for about a year, then once I'd gotten pretty much every model and a bunch of rare expansions, I'd had my fill and got rid of most of it.

The shakes will soon set in again... ;)

I still buy the odd harder to find items when they come up at a decent price for the couple of Amigas I have left. Recent purchases include an A1200 busboard, Merlin RTG board, and the brand new ACA630/30 accelerator for the A600.
At this point, however, I don't jump in my car for every A1000 and A2000 that pops up on Craigslist anymore.

I take it that means you just get the stuff delivered instead now...

..for the most part. But seriously, I'm about done with anything older than an A3000.

PS3? Feh, you dirty neophile! Newest thing I own (besides my laptop) is a Dreamcast.
(In chronological order, the consoles are: Atari 2600, clone Famicom, Sega Genesis/CD, NES/SNES clone, Saturn, Playstation, Nintendo 64, and Dreamcast.)

All I want for Christmas is a 386 bridgeboard for my Miggy Two Grand! (probably cost me that much too!) (http://www.amiga.org/forums/images/smilies/roflmao.gif)

Don't buy for the bargain (unless you have a definite plan to flip it for a profit). Instead, buy for a reason. Why am I buying this machine? What can I do with it that I cannot do with the other Amigas in my collection? Those are two important questions that I need to ask myself more often.
-
If I had the money to spare, I probably would buy almost every lot that shows up in the classifieds. I don't have a lot of cash to spend these days, however, so I've limited myself to one OCS machine and one AGA machine, and maybe a PPC mac at some point.
-
Stick to the rarer machines. You can boast a lot, but at the same time save space.
At most get two souped up A1200s/A500s (one spare) for playing games on.
Keep them in good order so you can turn them into cash fast when you eventually find a piece of electronics that will move your taste in a different direction.
-
Get rid of PC's to make room for the miggy's :)
Set yourself a limit that you'll only buy machines to actually use. Rather one miggy that gets love every day than 10 collecting dust

My Amiga addiction seriously got out of hand. I had up to 10 different Amiga's (all models) at one time. I finally had enough and sold 8 of them. I now own my trusty 2000 and 3000 and that is it.

Trust me if you only had 10 different amigas, this was not a addiction.
Pfft... Amateurs!

Hi adz, I just wanted to point out to you that on the show Mythbusters, they demonstrated that a turd could be polished.
Nonetheless, I still teared up when I read your sig.:roflmao:

easy!..just come here for regular counselling:afro:

Well I bought a "Cartoon Classics" boxed A500. Sadly it was not the A500 Plus I wanted (and used to own plus 2MB chip), didn't have any of the original software and has a duff modulator (rectified - I just bought one from ebid). The machine is completely non-yellowed however.
The 501 looks like it might be on it's way out but I'll add solder and lacquer it to get a few more months/years.
Really don't know why I bought it apart from price (£10, or about $17). I use my good condition 600 for games, 1200 is the gem in the collection and stored away, and the 500 will be "throw around" - probably... hopefully not throw out.
At this point I'm thinking I should have used the space for a C64...
-
I don't see this as a "problem".
You see them.
You buy them.
You use them.
No "problem"

I no longer have any real" hardware (apart fom a dead A500 motherboard on my workshop wall).
Used to own 4 A500's with various add-ons and an 030 A1200, but sold them all to good homes. I regret that sometimes when the nostalgic urge hits, but I'm happier knowing the people who bought them will use them more than I did. To me it's sadder to have the hardware but hardly ever use it, than it is to not have any and occasionally miss it.
Having said that, I'd still grab cheap/free Amiga hardware when it pops up. ;)
