I have A1000 and A590 SCSI controller that I want to use, but is it safe to connect it to A1000 side expansion slot? Will it work?

It should - there's no reason it shouldn't that I know of - electrically they are the same connector. Just turn it around, not upside down, and install. But, supporting it might be a problem, and you might run into problems with it covering the mouse/joystick ports.

there is also a problem of fitting it physically. because you'd have to chop off the metal plate that goes below A500. or get bus extender.

I never did that, but you must be careful not to short circuit anything with it.

IIRC, I had better luck with alfadata external hdd, than with a590.
maybe because I modified a590 to use internal power (A1000 PSU is weak?) or 'cause of extender.

Yeah the PSU is 80 watt, so you will have some problems with that.
I did cut the metal plate of the floppy drive in order to make room for a ram/ide card, but that woul'dn't work with the DKB Insider II.
That was one hell of a cut anyway.

Thanks for important info. I'll think twice before cut anything, but A590 definitely would make this machine much more usable. I have 512Kb Chip RAM available, so 4Mb Fast mem is a welcome addition and ofcourse hd drive!

I wonder if that unit requires Kickstart to be in ROM? That would be the 1st hurdle to using the HD, next to powering it. Might be a timing thing upon startup... which brings us up to question the PAL's on the daughterboard. Or does your machine NOT have the daughtercard?

I have used GVP and Supra hard drives/memory expansion designed for the A500 on an A1000 with no real problems. You may have to use the early A1000 mouse with the angled connector, and the second port may be a wash. The metal plate included with many A500 hard drives just isn't needed (even on the A500).
The expansion bus on the A500 is identical to the A1000. The bus is on opposite sides is all. Just find a book (or piece of wood) to support the unit when used on an A1000. Also, when using these "side car" type devices on an A1000, be sure to use an external PSU.
These will boot when using 1.3 OS - I have never tried them with 2.0 up on an A1000 (yet?)
I am not 100% sure about the A590, but if the GVP and Supra units work, it would seem that the A590 would too.

Nope, works fine with 1.3 booted from floppy (friend of mine used a naked 590 for some time). KS in ROM seriously speeds up the boot process and enables you to run 2.x however.

Mmmhhh... maybe I don't remember well (I have an A590 but it's not working - have to repair it), but inside the A590 you can mount just 2MB of Fast RAM with DIP chips (generally 120ns).
Anyway it's enough for first expanded setup like yours.

I have an A1000 Zorro I to Zorro II adaptor board for the A1000 I could sell you if you wanted to go that route (using cards for the A2000/3000/4000). I also have an Zorro I board with a right-angled Zorro II connector and a Zorro I pass-thru (that you could then plug into your A590). I have used both boards on an A1000 in the past. My favourite was an A2091 with 2MB of FAST RAM on it. I didn't use an external power supply with mine. If you can picture it, I connected both Zorro adaptor boards so I had two Zorro II connectors and had another ASDG 4MB board lying flat off of that as well... Ugly, but it worked....Good times. You are correct, I have 2Mb populated onboard. I remembered wrong, because I had SupraDriveXP (which I sold), it had 4Mb.

Long time ago I had my BBS running on A1000 + A590, sofkicked with KS2.0.
It run fine! You can also add 2mb of fastram.
The only "problem" is that the A590 face behind. Bad just for the look..

I don't have daughtercard on this thing.. Why you ask?
Because on NTSC/North American systems, we have problems with a lot of sidecar expansions due to the PAL's being slower and not grounded very well on the daughtercards. For instance, it's pretty common on an expansion like yours, that it might not work. Anything with RAM expansion over 2mb, and the A1000 expansion bus likes to choke and exhibit all sorts of strange problems. HD errors, wrong RAM values, etc.
