Title: OS3.9 tweaking suggestions ?
Post by: fishy_fiz on December 04, 2010, 06:20:35 AM
Having just recently done a fresh reinstall of Amithlon/OS3.9 Im still tweaking/tuning/adding all the extras I like/etc. I've gotten to a point where all the usual suspects (afa_os/mui/magic menu2) are installed and configured and am now going through aminet to find any useful and/or interesting bits and pieces.

While Ive been using amigas/amiga os more or less since their inception Ive never really done a lot of heavy tweaking/patching to the OS beyond what is necessary for a usable, slightly aesthetically enhanced system. I'd be interested to hear any recommendations as to what people consider worthwhile additions/tweaks/etc. for an OS3.9/rtg/ahi/68040 based system ?
Also is something like Oxypatcher/FastIEEE still worthwhile on OS3.9 ? According to the FastIEEE readme, OS3.9 math libraries have FastIEEE support built in.

Thanks in advance.

Get Oxypatcher, warpdatatypes and hsmathlibs for a start. Dont forget to get all the boingbags, the official ones (1&2) and the unofficial ones (3&4). ;)

Where do you get oxypatcher from?

I would give Thor's MMUTools a try - it's a real comprehensive package of tools for tweaking and fine tuning. It includes (for example) the famous loadmodule for loading single Kickstart modules, the patch for Shapeshifter/Fusion RAM reservation, special 680x0.libraries (0x0 = 030, 040, 040) and many more. By the way: AmigaOS 3.9 setpatch is compatible/aware of Thor's libs - which is no wonder, 'cos Tobias Richter were part of H&P's developer team back then (AFAIK).

Agreed. Absolutely essential (for me, anyhow).

But this is instead of OXYPatcher/CyberPatcher or the best is way is install MMULibs+OXY?

AFAIK Oxy-/Cyberpatcher is 68060 specific, while MMUTools is a tool box for all systems (030/040/060). If I had a 060 system *I* would use them mutual exclusive - but MMUTools feature a very comprehensive documentation, so it might be possible to use both patches/tools at the same time. RTFM, as always... ;-)

EDIT: Nice A2000 setup you have there, by the way... :-D

After you finish setting everything up the way you want it, make a copy on a 100 MB ZIP disk or onto a CD-R disc.  Then you will not have to do all that work again.  When your hard drive finally fails, and it will, you can just install another one and copy the entire contents of the ZIP or CD disc to the freshly formatted hard drive.

The suggestion above is a great idea.

Here's a shameless plug:  http://aminet.net/mods/smpl/VoiceOfAmiga.lha  ;)

The MMULib package has its own oxy/cyberpatcher replacement called muredox.

The most commonly used parts of the package are probably the CPU libraries (work great here on my Apollo, TekMagic, and Phase5 cards), mufastrom (mmu protected kickstart remapping), mufastzero (remap autovectors), and muredox (which will additionally show any patched instructions). I've also used mumaprom to test custom kickstarts before burning.

There's a lot more, and some caveats depending on your hardware. Either way, it's definitely good fun and worth a go. :-)

Thanks for the responses people.
I've gotten to the point I should probably back up....

Still very w.i.p, and a bit generic looking, but a good starting point. System is stable wth most of the extras Ive always uses and a few more. Now comes the experimental side .....   :)

Looks nice.   I'd imagine some slowdown?

It's actually my amithlon system, so I have a few resources to spare on eye candy. Having said that though I have taken a little effort to not just be excesive because I can. Ive all my patterns/textures for example have been reduced to the color depths/sizes they require, rather than being 16/24bit, just bacuse thats what I 1st did them in. Most of the eye candy is provided by afa_os and afa_zune, which are also probably the biggest resources "wasters". (having said that though it's not too bad and I believe there's people out there using it on "real" '040 based machines).

AfA_OS is more or less unusable on my 25 MHz 030 and still too demanding on my 40 MHz 040 (both RTG, CGX4/P96). To be truthfull I used AfA_OS only for testing purposes and found it has to many "side effects". Stability is more important than eye candy. Be aware of the fact that there is stuff that runs flawless in UAE (or maybe Amithlon) but is prone to crash a real Amiga. Due to the fact that more and more stuff is developed under UAE I have not too much hope for stable updates and software for my real classic Amigas.

AfA_OS never had and side effects on both my old Mediator/P96 setup or now BVision/CGX setup. Worked like a charm ever since with no problem at all!
It surely requires an 060 to function as intended and responsive using Anti-aliased fonts and PNG icons across Workbench.
Tools like WarpDT that speed up a lot (systems with PPC) due to fast rendering of Backdrops etc, and HSMathLibs are a perfect example of nice and effective Tweaking of 3.9.

So the best solution is: MMULibs+Muredox (instead of OXY or CyberPatcher)+MathLibs?

BTW: WarpDT are very fast on 060 too, not only on PPC. ;)

I think so, been using it here for many years and really like it. There's certainly nothing wrong with the Phase5 software, and of course you can run the HSMathLibs along with that, too. I just prefer using one related set of tools for as much as possible.

My idea of a patched 3.9/060 system -

Added or replaced in ROM (as modules, burned/blizkicked ROM image, etc):

exec_44.1
tlsfmem
console.device_44.10
ram_handler_44.24
shell_45.27
mathffp.library (from the HSMathLibs package)
mathieeesingbas.library (from the HSMathLibs package)
mumove4k
ChkInts
PowerWindows_BKPatch
NoClick
FixGetMsg
SpeedyIDE (use on your A1200 if IDEFix doesn't work with your CF card)
Romfixes

Most this stuff is available in the BlizKick and Remus archives, and I imagine some on Gulliver's site as well.

Ran from startup-sequence:

mumove4k (if not already in rom)
mufastzero (forgot to mention, this also remaps exec and expansion.library, if run with the above)
mufastrom
cmq060
taglife
env-handler

Additionally with non-RTG systems:

FBlit (needs careful configuration)
FScreen (only fun for periodic tinkering)
FText
BlazeWCP

Other miscellaneous bits:

AutoUpdateWB
WarpDT
PowerWindowsNG
IconBeFast
PowerIcons

Probably forgot a lot, but that about covers everything major.

Try launching wipeout2097, Heretic (WOS), Heretic II, TrackerHeroAGA or other progs (dont' remember all) with AfA, here they refuse to work/works oddly. AfA definitely has its bugs but the author Bernd is probably fixing them. ATM i have disabled AfA until some of these bugs are removed.
