Title: Best way to clean an A1200 motherboard?
Post by: RMK305 on November 17, 2010, 09:44:23 PM
I'm planning to clean up the case of an A1200 I've just dug out the loft with some retrobite and was wondering what the best way to clean the motherboard would be? Can they be washed safely and if so, with what?

Thanks,

Robert

Is it really that dirty, dingy, hairy and bug ridden? Brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner wouldn't do the trick? If you're super anal about this sort of thing and want to bring back the illustrious "new" look to the board, I've had extremely good luck spraying 'em down with a cleaner such as Fantastic, Spray Power or window cleaner. Spray the hell out of it (like with a garden hose or basement wash tub), let it sit for a minute or two and then rinse the living snot out of it to where you no longer see any soapy bubbles. I then shake 'em out, wipe 'em down and use a hair dryer to finish the job. If it's nice and sunny out, might even let them sit out for a bit too. A half a day later, you should be able to power the thing up safely.

I know electronics repairmen that simply throw old boards into their dishwashers... but I wouldn't trust their heating element drying cycle to not damage 'em. I believe the method I've outlined is much safer and you should see the boards I have done. Damn things truly look like new. Sorry about the image quality. Really wish I would have kept my nicer macro lens. Some pics:

...the PeeCee and ][gs boards were F*U*N*K*Y before the wash!  (notice the "fast ram" and "standard ram" monikers on the ][gs board?)

So window cleaner and a good rinse and dry is safe enough? I'm not overly anal about these things but as the machine is being stripped down I figured now is the time to clean it up.

Oh, and I got the LEDs working. No idea how, they just lept into life.

Cold solder per chance. If they go out again on you, try wiggling... just a little bit.  lol

...and then make the necessary repair.

Cheers save2600, been wondering about that... :)

Reckon I'll stick with UPVC cleaner than muck around with that toxic stuff (does the same job anyway and a quite harmless to your lungs... :) )

Well, the mother board has one danger, the clock battery, but you can clean the motherboard with one product as contact cleaner use in electronic repairs, or a single way, alcohol of 96º use in medicine cures but with much care, to avoid the plastic and some components sensitive for example the condesators if they hava charge, but with alcohol on a piece of cloth you can clean the motherboard bottom.

I'd second the alcohol. There used to be flurocarbon based solvents you could use, but I don't think they're available anymore.

A car wash? But you have to take out the wifi antenna...:roflmao:
Beg you pardon... Isopropyl alcohol, but not much.

No 1200 I've ever seen had a clock battery on the motherboard!

I've hosed ugly old A2000 boards off on the sidewalk, but really, most boards I've seen were good enough after a blast of compressed air.

From what I hear there isn't much sun in Scotland, I bet the Amigas don't turn yellow there from anything but tobacco smoke!

Yeah, I live in the Canary Islands...

Never heard of the "Canary Islands" until we played Where in Europe is Carmen Sandiego last night on the trusty old A1000  :)

Malta is another one of those strange, elusive places - but seems there's an Amiga user or two from there!   lol

Yeah, I have found a place in the Amiga map where nobody was....jojojo... and it isn't Mohave desert.

All you need to keep all your PCB or computer cases in pristine condition

The UPVC Cleaner & UPVC reviver will restore your computer case, monitor case, DVD Recorder, TV (CRT or LCD) (in fact anything plastic really or enamel coated, fridges, washing machines etc...) in excellent condition.

The PCB Cleaner or Brute Deodorant are excellent for restoring any PCB or components to look like new again...

(PS: The Brute Deodorant also makes you Amiga smell lovely, especially when it gets warm...)

Try them, they really do work... :)

I literally washed an A1200 motherboard with water. This was after having gotten sugar-laden milk on it.

I literally used regular tap water (soft) until all the crap was shifted. I then used distilled water to remove any minerals that might be left behind by the first rinse. Finally I dried sensitive areas with IPA (isopropyl alcohol) and then let the thing dry for several days in a warm, dry cupboard.

Was absolutely fine afterwards.

This is exactly what I've done in the few cases where an air compressor wasn't enough. Water (possibly with baking soda and a toothbrush if it's really nasty), rinse with distilled, and IPA. I buy the IPA from the local electronics joint, since the regular variety sold here leaves a residue. I'm also careful not to soak any stickers present on the board. :P

Is UPVC cleaner abrasive? I'll maybe pop into B&Q and try some of that if it's not.

The UPVC Cleaner in the spray bottle is completely non abrasive, simply spray some onto a soft damp cloth or onto the surface to be cleaned wipe all over, then with another clean soft damp cloth give another quick wipe and you end up with a surface thats squeaky clean and has that feel and smell as if it was just bought and had just came out the packaging for the first time.

Works on almost anything around the home, computers, monitors (CRT & LCD), printers, DVD Recorders, fridges, washing machines, radiators etc...

The UPVC Reviver is VERY abrasive and requires a bit of practice first, but it will remove most scratches from any plastics or enamel painted surfaces (or oxidization/yellowing) and bring surfaces up like new. Same instructions as above but remember to practice on something else first... Once your used to using it you can even remove scratches from things like the clear plastic windows on DVD recorders etc... But make sure you practice first with this stuff or you could ruin it.

For best results when finished a quick buff up with a soft dry cloth and I think you'll be impressed with the results.

The De-Solv-It brand & the No Nonsense brand are the best, and available from Screw-Fix, you can buy them online or from your local Screw-Fix Depot where they are a lot cheaper than B&Q... :)

Tobacco smoke my arse!

From Robbie Coltrane's Culinary Masterstrokes:
Quote

Ye dip the wee mainboard in egg, then flour, then batter. Then deep fry the fecker. After 2 minutes, pick it oot with the strainer, and give it a good couple'o whacks against the side of the fryer.

:-P

Also we know how and what dirt has the motherboard? the compressed air is good for case to lint and dust, with grease or mold the alcohol, with the use if there are carbon in the contacts etc. alcohol or the best a conctact cleaner, smoke from cigarrettes that left a dirt greasy with alcohol, etc., ect, but every case there are a solution.
