Half-Life 2
Karlos is right - over 30 years of gaming... picking only one is REAL tough. It would even be a stretch to pick just one across all the platforms we might be familiar with. Having said that, I guess I'd be inclined to pick something that's different almost every time you play it. Utopia for Intellivision for example is way up there as a fav as is INTV Baseball. Pinball Construction Set on C64. Dune II on Amiga. I'm also really partial to Super Street Fighter II Turbo and C.E. arcade or SNES. Yeah, not so sure I could ever pick just one without qualification and breaking it down by genre and platform ;)
Aw come on have a go at it! :)
It's Goldeneye isn't it?

This one's pretty close, if not number one.
The greatest game EVER is Bomb Jack on the CPC 464! It had no pause function and was for me the crack of the game playing world. I used to play it for hours as you couldn't stop.
I'm sucker for anything with great storytelling...
How about on "each" platform? ;)
Commodore Amiga - "James Pond 2: Robocod"
Commodore 64 - "Ghostbusters"
PC - "Carmageddon" (with "Stunts: 4D Sports Racing" a close second)
Mac - "Photoshop"
Atari 2600 - "Yar's Revenge"
Atari Jaguar - "Tempest 2000"
Sega Genesis - "Toejam & Earl"
Sega Saturn - "Baku Baku Animal"
Sega Dreamcast - "Chu Chu Rocket"
Playstation 1 - "Wipeout XL" or "Micro Maniacs" (tie)
Playstation 2 - "Katamari Damacy"
Playstation 3, XBox, XBox 360 - buy me one and I'll tell you.
Nintendo Entertainment System - "Duck Hunt"
Nintendo Wii - "Epic Mickey" (soon.)
Atari Lynx - "Chips Challenge"
Nintendo Gameboy/GBC - "Tetris"
Nintendo GBA - "Tron 2.0" (for the minigames)
Nintendo DS - "Space Invaders Extreme"
Sony PSP - "Echochrome"
but overall? I'd say #1:Tempest 2000, #2:Katamari Damacy, #3:Carmageddon
My favorite game of all time has to be Terranigma on the SNES, it is in my humble opinion the best R.P.G. game ever on any platform... :)
I always loved "Oil's Well" for the C64.
My favourites in no particular order:
Doom2 on the PC
ManicMiner on the Spectrum
Wipeout 2097 on the Amiga
Raiden II on the Arcade jamma board
Maniac Mansion on the C64
SimCity 2000 on the Macintosh 68k
Elfmania runs quite nicely on my Kickstart 1.3 Amiga :)
Amiga 500 ROM 2.05: ElfMania and SWOS 97.
