Post by: mojo1999 on November 14, 2010, 09:31:43 PM
Can somone tell me the best (cheapest) way to connect a basic IDE cd to an amiga 1200.  What to install 3.9 on the hd, however i only have the HxC virtual floppy.

well you come to right place the cheapest is just by getting internal pc ide cdrom drive dvd for that matter using buffred card is recommned but you dont have one use short as possible ide 3 1/2 cable you have to have 3 1/2 hard drive as well and just have both running of the internal 2 1/2 port you have cd dvd sitting on table outside your case
as l do for my bbs setup you should be buy 3 1/2 to 2/12 apator cable from amigakit still
l got mine from compnay in austrila still going too.l got one left over that u can have if your stuck might not be 100 % but still works l dont use it anymore as use compact flash card insteed

Cheapest way is the Adapter from Amiga kit... :)

But if you want the best speed & performance I'd recommend the FASTATA MKIII from Elbox, it's more expensive but a much better board... :)

The cheapest (i.e. free) way is to forget about a CD ROM and install AmigaOS3.9 onto your hard drive by connecting it directly to your PC and using WinUAE.

thanks, that was quick.

Is the 4-Device Buffered IDE interface for the Amiga what i need?

I currently have a 2.5 in hd installed, will this work ok with a standard CD IDE, don't they have different sized cables?

you plug the little cable to the ide express l think must got new cable with my card
and then plug in your 2 1/2 ide cable to the little card its got 2 x 44 pin 2 1/2 connectors
and 2 40 pin 3 1/2 connectors . you plug your orginal cable to connector closest to edge of the card and plug you hard drive to next one . it have instructions with it
for you cdrom or dvd doesint matter which u use standred pc cable availible easy enough
l post picture  but not sure where l can showing my setup.
having buffred port is for the best on the 1200 means you dont have to worry about
the cable length within reason
yes any ide cdrom unit fine just make sure not sata device but these use very thin conector
should get second hand dirt cheap these days few dollars

It's a good choice for the price, the FASTATA MKIII is around the 70 quid mark the last time I looked and if your not too bothered about fast burning speeds for CD or DVD then the AmigaKit one should do the trick... best of luck with it... :)

You only have to follow this instructions here to make it through WinUAE and use your Hd connected to your PC to install it or to copy the installed DH0:
