Hi Everyone,
Total newbie question sorry... I am going to purchase a ACA630 for my Amiga A600 when they become available but I am worried about it speeding up the games I intend to play so they are not as they should be / realistic.
I am only going to play a handful of games namely, Beneath a Steel Sky, Ruff N' Tumble, Theme Park, Syndicate and Choas Engine. There are probably a few more I cannot think of..!! I am just wondering if these are going to run at the correct speed? Whether the authors who produced these actually factored in a 'maximum' run/play speed to compensate for the various performance of Amigas at the time I am not sure. If I had to guess I would say the early games, no! But the newer games, yes! :)
I don't think I am that bother about WHload as I want to play most of my games from disk with the exception of Beneath a Steel Sky that I will install using it's own installation process..
Has anyone got any advice?

I've never seen a commercial game run too fast on an accelerated Amiga, not to say there are none that will, but it doesn't seem common.

There might be exceptions, but games that get their timing from the CPU instead of the video's vertical refresh were rare by the time the Amiga debuted; the latest ones I've seen were the Mega Man PC original games from 1990, and even then that was uncommon. There are probably some exceptions, but I've never encountered an Amiga game whose speed was affected by an accelerator.

Ditto - no experience with games being sped up either. Wish a few were affected by that though! lol

Ha ha! I remember the Megaman experience on DOS! I had to download something called MoSlo.
But ya, on the AMiga, I don't recall having run into this issue yet.

There were/are a few games that actually benefit from a faster CPU on the Amiga, but even with a Blizzard060/PPC I've never found one that ran too fast, so it's not really a problem you have to worry about... :)

Generally,amiga games do just fine.
THere's a few exceptions I've come across. Syndicate runs faster but on an 030 it works great.
It seems Jaguar and Lotus runs faster too, but I could be mistaken there.
By and large you'll be fine though

The 030 is where 3d games (flat polys - flight sims, etc.) hit the sweet spot. A10 Tank Killer becomes a joy to zip around in. Wing Commander's a blast at that speed, too.
Perhaps some Amiga DOOM fans can pipe up about what kind of speed you'll see when you get into 030ville for FPS's...

the original user has a 600 which is limited.
My 030 experience on my 1200 (030/25) is:
AB3D runs great
Gloom and Fears, reduce screensize slightly and runs great.
Breathless runs okay at half size
Doom runs like it did on a 386. Dreadfull :)

From the Buggy Boy WHDLoad installer info: If you think you're a legend at this game, try it with caches enabled on a grunty Amiga :)
Yes, did it with my 060. It works nicely with 68000. Guess the effect of 060...

I had problems on my friends A4000 with cyberstorm 060 playing Dune II
I was overrun in the matter of seconds on the first mission.
Although a while ago, it was way to fast for me...
With my 030 (50mhz) 500+ cyndicate and dune II runs a lot faster that bog standard 68K. but still playable...

Those problems are easily solved by either running the games as WHDload versions or using various degraders... :)

Or by booting into 68k mode... :D
I must say, playing cyndicate on 030 was a bit of extra edge to the gameplay. a new level of "difficulty", so to speak...

If you get the ACA630 you would be wise to also get the A603 and Indivision ECS to take full advantage of the faster speed. There are hardly any OCS games that take advantage of the 030, but some of those 3D AGA games have the option of using the Grafitti card, which was a Chunky graphics output in 256 colours and is emulated in the Indivision ECS. Also, through a new direct-video mode (which may or may not be developed further into an actual RTG mode) it's possible to play DOOM in 256 colours on the A600 very smoothly. It has been shown running in 1024x768 in 256 colours on an A600 with those three expansions. Hopefully we will also see a Shapeshifter driver for this new mode, so we could run all those Mac games at full speed too.
As others have mentioned though, since Amiga games generally got their timing from the chipset instead of the CPU, they don't go all crazy-fast when played on a more powerful CPU like a lot of old DOS games did.

I don't recall any Amiga game being too fast and I have played using 030 and 040 on my A1200. In some you will notice speed up eg. Syndicate, Theme Park but it will just make the gameplay more comfortable.

yeah, syndicate always felt a little sluggish on a 500. With an 030 it moves at a nice clip.

Cool! It sounds like I can kill two birds with one stone as I accidentally ordered my CF drive with SFS which I was going to send back, I won't bother now and just buy the accelerator.
I am so glad I dug my Amiga out again, I love all the enthusiastic help, and passion for the machine :).
I might end up buying WHload evently, it just looks a bit technical to be honest - fantastic piece of software though :)

PS - I've waited 15 years to play Beneath a Steel Sky, and from hard media (I can't really call it a disk lol) should be an absolute treat :)

Beneath a steel sky is easily one of my fave adventure games, and one that is relatively lacking in completely illogical puzzles, making it beatable by normal people :)

nigel mansell world championship has a faster frame rate on the faster cpu, but that only improves the experience, on a 50 mhz 030 its a joy to play, IMo its the best first person racer on the Amiga when you have a faster cpu.

I remember playing Monkey Island on a stock a500 after being used to it on an a1200 with fast ram and the difference is quite noticable. Another game I noticed speeds up with a faster cpu is the original Street Fighter 2 port by US Gold. It's not any smoother unfortunately though, just faster.

Faster CPU does not fill the gaps of lack of animation frames ;) It just can make the animation to be played faster.

Sure, but it couldve made things move more fluidly, which is the bigger problem with the U.S. gold version. It has the big sprites and most of, if not all frames of animation, it's just that they dont move too well, especially when jumping. I think maybe some of the frames arent centred either, which plays some part in the weird look to the movement.
I know it's off topic, but I've always wanted a good version of SF2 for Amiga. SSF2 plays quite well, but surely the amiga is capable of something that looks a little closer. SSF2Turbo looks very nice, but lacks a bunch of animation to a point that it changes the gameplay (street fighter fan will understand that the timing is quite important). If it's any indication though a fairly accurate version would be possible, although would probably require 2 meg chip + a little fast ram to do something like a 3do/saturn/etc quality port.
It's been something Ive wanted to remake for a long time, and even have started a few attempts, but the sheer volume of gfx is discouraging after a while, especially seeing as I can already play it on my ps2/xb360/etc.

I must have missed your post the first time around :) Yeah I already own a A603, lovely piece of hardware, really well made :) I would really like a Indivision ECS but I don't want to loose my floppy drive - I am really gutted otherwise I would buy one of these as well :( I guess in the future if I really get bitten by the Amiga bug I will remove my floppy drive and use WHload and a external disk drive to get my games on the solid state drive.
Wow you're right, must be a legacy of my PC owning past that I was worried about all the classic Amiga games going a bit quick on an accelerated Amiga.
Really cannot wait to buy the ACA630, it should rock and looks beautifully engineered :) (i'm a sucker for interesting hardware... :)

That sounds really cool! Don't worry about remaking the whole game, just create one level and your two favorite characters and take it from there! - With that description I am getting flash backs of the Spectrum version!! :)

WHDload isn't complicated to use. Just install it using the script and find and use the installer scripts for your games. Just clicking a few buttons really.
Legal download sites have plenty of WHDload games which will run from wherever you unpack them to.

Frontier Elite II, and that will also make use of the FPU!
Even on a 060 it will go, it's one of the few games that really kicks the ass of your cpu and fpu :roflmao:
If it goes too fast, it will probably crash anyway :roflmao:

I am definitely going to have to buy a copy of Elite II - I was too immature and impatient back in the day, I think with more worldliness and patience I would actually love it.
Bizarrely my plan with my Amiga is actually to indulge in the games I never really played properly, the stuff I played to death like Chaos Engine and Cannon Fodder, although I have found memories I feel like i have done these now :) Too many cool things to do/play and not enough time in life I find :)

I once played James Pond 2 on a A2000 with 030 processor, and the game was too fast plus there was some flickering on the screen. I found the game to be very hard because of this.
I'm considering a ACA630 for my A600 as well, but I hope it will include the possibility for temporarely disabling the 030 either via a keyboard combo on startup, or via a switch.

I would really like a Indivision ECS but I don't want to loose my floppy drive - I am really gutted otherwise I would buy one of these as well :(
The ACA630 has an onboard jumper that turns an externally connected drive (DF1) into (DF0).
So you can remove the internal drive, and use an external one in it's place.
