Post by: Franko on November 12, 2010, 05:10:26 AM

1) OS 1.3
2) OS 2.04
3) OS 3.0
4) OS 3.1
5) OS 3.5
6) OS 3.9
7) OS 4.0
8) OS 4.1

Where is the 3.0 Kickstart and 3.1 Workbench option?

I've got my money on that one. ;)

Sorry but I'm in the habit of calling OS 3.0 & OS 3.1 the same thing as kickstart... :)

Reckon myself 3.0 will lead the way as a lot of folk never got round to upgrading the ROMS to 3.1... :)

For me:
On my Amiga Real Machine (ARM) I use AmigaOS 3.9

On my Amiga Virtual Machine (AVM) I use AmikitOS

OS2.4? There was no OS2.4, only OS2.0x and OS2.1 (and Kickstart 2.0x, x=0,4,5).

3.1 here. Heck, I've only recently acquired the hardware needed to run anything newer (well, except uCLinux, maybe.) I haven't gotten too far into anything power-userish, but unless I really need to use something that won't run on it I think I'll be sticking with 3.1.

B2000: 3.1 with Classic WB Picasso96
A1200: 3.1 with Classic WB ADV (sp?).

I know, made a typo and it's been years since I last used 2.04 on my old A1500, can't change it now though... :o

OS 3.1 with relokick when needed.
Use to have 2.04 on my A2000. Just an early 1.3 on my A500.

Things are getting slow around here, how about some UAE threads to jazz things up?

Just dug out my old OS 2.04 floppies, so OS 2.04 did exist...

Thought I was losing my memory for a moment there... :)

What's there to discuss about UAE that would be interesting...

Workbench 3.1 customised to the max on classic hardware.

I have a 3.9 partition for testing stuff though, but it's just too slow compared to 3.1.

3.1 here, with some carefully picked add-ons which make it more functional than 3.9 and yet faster. 3.9 is a piece of bloatware in my opinion, the closest thing to Windows to be found on an Amiga :)

I pretty much use them all from 3.1 upwards at the moment. Currently, I'm using 4.1 most, but it's not a statistically accurate reflection of my usage.

Hmm... I am flabbergasted. If you treat Kickstart as the same thing as OS 3.0 & OS 3.1, then what option should you choose having ROM 3.1 and running OS 3.9 on it?

Well, AFAIK ROM 3.1 is patched during boot and it's seen by the system as Kickstart 3.9.

But what system are you using? Kickstart 3.9 or AmigaOS 3.9? I think the question was about the operational system. So the issue raised by Heiroglyph about 3.0 Kickstart and 3.1 Workbench option is clear that you can't mix them. OS 3.1 is OS 3.1 and it does not matter if it is on patched or non-patched ROM 3.0 or 3.1.

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, noticed that. Perhaps the poll should have been entitled "Which version of AmigaOS do you use the most?" since that's what it appears to be asking. As it stands, I'm sure it's excluding a decent wedge of users here.

The 3.0/3.1 thing was just a joke.

For years that's what I saw 99% of time on AGA systems.  The ROM's were scarce but 3.1 would run with them, so people used it that way.

I'd still call it 3.1.

I use 3.9 with BoingBags 1, 2, 3 , and 4. Then added some OS4.0 68k leftovers, and have made a lot of customizations and upgrades to make it even more usable.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - there's no reason for an OS3.9 setup to be more bloated than a 3.1 setup. You just have to tweak it a little, just like you do with 3.1 anyways. I run 3.9 on whatever I have, including Minimig where I really have to be carefull about what parts of OS3.9 I use, and revert to 3.5, 3.1 and aminet to fill in the gaps that are not 68000 compatible (like C:Makedir - what on earth could be 020+ optimized in C:Makedir?)

Probably a compiler-generated addressing mode, 32-bit multiplication or something like that.

3.1 and then Classic WB 3.1, 3.9 is like Cammy said, just slower.
I'm looking forward to 4.1 for classic Amiga's.

Edit: :laughing:my vote makes it a tie now between 3.1 and 3.9

And do you actually think 4.1 for Classics is going to be faster than any of those?
I have a BlizzardPPC + Bvision and had to go back to 3.9 for better performance when 4.0 for Classics was released.

Not quite sure what you mean !!!

Although you can use the WB 3.1 disks with 3.0 Roms (be it with a few problems) I tried OS 3.9 a couple of times but gave up and went back to 3.5, to me 3.9 is 3.9 just like 3.1 is 3.1, you really need 3.1 Roms to run them both but if you were using 3.9 you wouldn't say you were using 3.1 just because the roms were 3.1 would you...

Hope you can understand what I mean here (cos I don't...)

Seems I left out quite a few options... :(

Look it was around 6 am when I started the thread, I hadn't had anymore than 3 hours sleep in the past 24 hours, have a bad head cold, a dose of the runs (after too many vindaloo's), it's been peeing down and blowing a gale here for the past few days, my kitchen window had blown open and the squirrels had got in and piddled all over the floor, I'd run out of coffee and my medication had worn off... :insane:

So apologies to everyone who feels left out and to the postman who delivered a package to me this morning, for me being a bit grumpy and ranting on at him like a crazed loon cos the package was soaking wet... :o

Hmm..OS 3.9 has large hard drive support, TCP stack, email, web browser, Action, updated multiview, updated dataypes, 24 bit printer support,  cd file system and atapi support, built in dock, new icon information with drag an drop icon update, animated scrolling of icons within windows, correct aspect ratio of window's horizontal scroll bar. Probably a fair few other things that aren't visible on the surface.

You could do most of this stuff with 3rd party utilities, but its nice to have it all there for you when you boot.

Having said that I I use a 4 color 3.1 workbench and 3.1 ROM, flies.  Eye candy no longer matters to me.

If you're using a 3.0 ROM with 3.1 I think its its worth getting the 3.1 ROM, seems more stable and screen re-draws seem faster.

It is not the first time you have neglected us and probably won't be the last, but your polls that do not include us have little meaning, since they leave out such a large percentage of the remaining Amiga community.

Also, it is very annoying that you repeat this pattern over and over again, just because of your personal preferences, which IIRC are for Classic Amiga computers only, yet you always seem to remember AmigaOS4.x, which is no more related to the old Classic Amiga hardware than MorphOS2.x is.  In fact, MorphOS has been around for longer than AmigaOS4.x and had a free version for Classic Amiga computers with Phase5 PowerUp boards many years ago (10 I believe is the correct number).

If you are going to create this endless progression of polls here at Amiga.org, please try to make an attempt to include ALL of the members here, or think about moving such exclusive polls to Amigan.net instead.

Edit:  Had I known that this thread was going to turn into an opinion of what members thought was the "Best" Amiga OS, or which Amiga OS does each voter use the most, instead of how it is literally worded "Which Amiga OS is used most?", I would boycot the poll completely, as the "best" Amiga OS IMHO, or the Amiga OS I use the most often, is not listed as one of the choices.

To me, that question means which Amiga OS is used the most by everyone in the world.  Everyone is free to interpret it any way they like, but it lessens the validity of the result when people are voting with different perceptions of what the poll is asking.  I mean really, how can 15 voters really think that AmigaOS4.1 is used more than the other Classic AmigaOS choices, unless they are thinking that the question is only for each user in their own homes, or which they think is the best Amiga OS for them?

There is enough division of this community from the past, please do not perpetuate it further by excluding half of it from your polls, or insulting us with your personal opinions on what "IS" and "IS NOT" an Amiga OS.

Another interesting question is: What OS did you use the most (total time since 1985).

To me this would be 1.3. I started with Kick&WB 1.2, but WB1.3 was already out when I got my RAM expansion. I didn´t upgrade to 2.04 until 1992 which makes it 5 years of daily usage for WB1.3. In 1995 I got my first LinuxPC and didn´t boot into Workbench that often anymore. So only 3 years for 2.04, 2.1 and 3.1 combined.

I am now in my second year of AmigaOS 4.1 and I hope it will be good for another three years. ;-)

@ amigadave

First off, I didn't deliberately neglect you or anyone else, read the thread and you shall see my answers to that already.

If you find it annoying then sorry but what my own personal preferences and choices are have nothing whatsoever to do with you. If you don't like what I have to say or take part in polls that I post then just ignore them or start your own polls that you would feel suit your personal choices & opinions better. No one is forcing you to take part in them and no one is forcing you to read my posts. If I see a poll that if feel doesn't include or have an interest for my own choices or preferences then I simply don't take part in it, I certainly don't go whining to the polls creator that they left me out.

There is an option on this site to block or ignore what a particular person posts so perhaps you should put me on that list as others have done, then anything I have to say will not cause offense or upset you.

If other members wish to express their opinions on what they think is the best OS version then that is their own free choice and I'm not complaining that they do so and I'm certainly not responsible for what other members may post.

As for insulting you with my own personal opinions then that really is just pathetic to be perfectly honest with you, I may not like what your opinions are but I don't go on a rant telling you so. If I really did have an issue with you about something you had to say then I would have the decency to PM you about it first. As you chose to take this course of action I am simply responding in kind in this case.

As for taking my 'exclusive polls' elsewhere, let me make this perfectly clear to you, I don't take kindly to someone whom I don't even know telling me what to do in public and in such an offensive manner as you have chosen to do here, so if you would be so kind in future to take up any issues you have with me by PM then I can assure you you will receive from me the reply you deserve.

As for why you have chosen to do this I have no idea, but I consider myself a very reasonable and carefree type of person so if you wish to discuss this further in a more civil manner then feel free to PM me, if not then so be it. I wont be putting you on my ignore list but shall read your future posts but choose not respond to them in any way if this is the kind of silly & childish attitude which you have displayed here is all you have to say in future.

Yours Sincerely

Frank Spiers

Depends on how you look at the question.

Current usage ... I use OS4.1 the most.

If I look at this question as which Amiga OS did I use most since 1985:
1st place goes to OS 3.1 on my A2000HD
2nd place would probably go to OS 1.3, the original OS on my A2000HD
3nd place goes to OS 4.0 on my MicroA1
4rd place goes to OS 4.1 on my MicroA1

Never thought such a simple wee question could cause so much confusion or upset...:)

The way I meant the question to be was quite simply which amongst folk who answered the question is the OS system that you use on your Amiga the most. :)

Seems though it got a wee bit confused somewhere along the way, but you are asked when placing a poll to keep the title and options brief and are limited to 10 options. Now if the limit was raised to say around 200 options then I'm sure I could include everyone and their auntie in future polls... :)

(or maybe it's my Scottish accent that no-one can understand... )

Amikit/AmigaOS3.x. Lately, I tinker more towards IcAROS on real hardware (laptop).

As a moderator, I can add MorphOS and AROS as options to the poll (since you've only used 8 of the 10 possible options), if you wish. It's your poll/thread, so your choice.

I like to have different HD CF configurations, so I did a lateral slot for it on the Amiga. By now I "only" have 3, but all of them run under OS3.9:

-32Gb Transcend CF running Sys4Aga with OS3.9 BB4
-16Gb Sandisk CF running an Amikit conversion BB2 (lot of problems without graphic card, lots of things I like)
-16Gb Sandisk CF running ClassicWb OS39. Really nice

I have just thought now about the P96 ClassicWB. It looks great to be with Wb 3.1. Perhaps I will install it in a 4Gb Sandisk CF I've got, if it doesn't have support for big HD...

Wow... didn't realise you could do that, cheers Karlos... :)

Might be a wee bit too late now as the polls closed and I'd probably get more flack from folk who wanted to vote that way in the first place and who then chose something else...

If you'd care to change it then feel free to do so, maybe best just to consign this one to the archives though... :)

It's nay bother, the poll can be extended to remain open for however long it needs. Can also fix that OS2.4 faux pas ;)

Options added, also noted that 2.1 was missing. Perhaps 1.x, 2.x would suffice as the first options as they are clearly a minority either way.

Right dudes, go for your lives...

I think the poll should be closed, so 3.9 can stay at 40.68%!

Though of course something like 45.57 would be more appropriate.

AmigaOS? pfft. Sorry.

On the other hand, I DO use Workbench 1.3.3 the most. :P
Well, on the A500. I actually prefer it.

On the V4000 (UAE pretending to be an A4000/040)....
I use 3.9. I'd use 3.1, but no disks :(

And which do I prefer? Honestly... Workbench 1.3. The color scheme is easier on the eyes, I like the icons, and unlike 2.x/3.x, the icons are always proportional. (But then again, afaik, you're stuck with one screenmode in Workbench, so go figure.) I've never seen much reason to upgrade. 3.9 is used for little more than preparing disk images to send over...

PS: My first thought when looking at Tone007's avatar: "Seth Green owns an Amiga???" Looks like I'm not the only one. xD

honestly I use AROS more than another other OS now... though 3.0 gets fired up from time to time to get stuff off my A1200's HD... and 1.3 is run a couple of times a year just to remind me of proper computing.

I'm using 3.5 with AmiKit on my Windows machine, and 1.3 on my trusty old A1000 (usually 1.3.3).
My A2000 with 3.1 is in storage at the moment, so that is not being used.
I actually like 3.9 the most, but I can't afford it....
Is that confusing enough for keeping within the "classic" OSes?

I too, play music although I am not in a band these days. Used to play Bluegrass and Rock (at different times, of course)

Wow..

Funny, I had that same Yamaha keyboard back in the day...
(Never learned to play anything on it; or any keyboard actually..)

Wasn't the demo song on that keyboard, "Last Christmas" by Wham?

I got it with the intention of hooking it up to my Amiga, as that keyboard had MIDI!
But, as I never got around to getting the MIDI interface for the Amiga, that didn't go as planned..  ;-)

G5 does have enough horsepower for today's stuff.

I just have a hard time spending money on anything that isn't Intel these days, since MacOS went x86 and then there's all the x86 Linux and of course good old reliable Windows* to run.

I reckon it should suit me, as I really only want it to be able to access the net more quickly than what this G4 can do, and the little play around I had with the last G5 I tried things like iDVD and iMovie ran at useable speeds on it. :)

I can put the G4 on ebay and get around £250 -to £280 for it quite easily as they very rarely go for much less than that here... :)

With a Mac it is simple... Boot the G4 in Target mode (with a firewire between them), and when you boot the install disk (on the new machine) select to transfer the accounts across. I have a brand new MacBook here where the user accounts are over 4 years old and originally set up on my old 12" PowerBook and have been transferred this way 5 times now!!!

In all seriousness, though should really think about an intel mac... the PPC ones are really long in the tooth now.

@Franko,

That sounds like a lot of money for a G5 iMac ($565 US, what size and speed is it), but of course it depends on what the prices for such computers usually sell for in your area.  For that amount of money, I could get a Dual 2.7GHz G5 PowerMac, or even a Quad Core, Dual 2.5GHz G5 last generation PCI-e PowerMac (or a Dual 1.42GHz G4 PowerMac and  a 20" to 23" LCD wide-screen monitor too, with money left over).

If VAT or other import taxes were not so expensive to ship computers from the USA to the UK and EU, it would be worth the trouble to get them from here and ship them over the Atlantic.  Anyone want to go into partnership of selling of old computers in the UK and EU?  I will be the source and responsible for finding what customers want here in the States, Canada, or Mexico and then ship them to you, or directly to the customer's address.  There was a month or two where the prices for G4 and G5 PowerMacs had fallen to really low prices just a few weeks ago, but now prices seem to have crept back up a bit, but not too much and certainly not nearly as much as the amount Franko just spent on his G5 iMac (sorry, don't mean to run it in).  Six weeks ago I could have purchased a Dual 2.7GHz G5 PowerMac w/2-4gb RAM & 250-500gb hdd capacity for about $390 to $475, a top of the G5 range Quad Core, Dual 2.5GHz G5 PowerMac w/PCI-e slots & 2-8gb RAM for about $450 to $575 and Dual 1.25GHz, or 1.42GHz G4 PowerMacs for about $75 to $125, or less.  If you can find dead PPC Mac computers that you want over there that still have nice cases and other peripherals, I could get just the motherboards and CPU units here and save a lot on cheaper shipping costs.  Then I would part out the rest of the computer here, the heavy parts that don't make sense to ship overseas.

But of course this poll is more important than electing a president... :D

@ amigadave

It's an iMacG5 PPC iSight 2.1Ghz 20" model as I got for £325 that's the best deal I've seen in months on ebay, just wish I could have collected it as the seller only lives 7 miles away but he said no and it's costing me another £25 shipping and I have to wait till Thurday to get it, crazy or what... :)

here's a link to the current ones on ebay

UK Ebay Prices For iMacs (http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_trkparms=65%253A12%257C66%253A2%257C39%253A1%257C72%253A3444&rt=nc&_nkw=imac+g5+20&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_sop=1&_sc=1)

If you keep your eye on them you'll see the silly prices they go for over here and it's always within the last 15 minutes of the sale that thing go mad.

But thats the problem here for folk like myself, if you really want it it's going to cost you... :(

(Wish I could get hold of them at the prices you have in the States, could be even richer than I already am...  :) )

I can only sympathize with you and agree that if you want something and don't want to wait while looking around for better prices, eBay will get you where it hurts (the wallet) every time.  The best price I could find here for the same computer as yours on eBay was about $350 to $420.  Shipping is expensive due to the size and weight of such computers, so buying here and sending it there is not really an option for these models, but if you ever need parts for yours, that is another story.

That is a nice computer for web browsing, Skype calls, iChat with family and friends, listening to music and watching movies/dvd's.  When my 80+ year old Dad wanted a new computer a couple of years ago, my sisters and I talked him into buying a used 17-inch G5 iMac from eBay USA, instead of buying a new eMachine with no monitor or webcam, for about the same price.  He loves it and is very happy with the switch from Windows98 to MacOSX.  You will now have a much better iMac than your 800MHz G4 iMac. Since one sister lives near Auckland, NZ, my Dad likes using the iSight and iChat to see and talk to her from time to time.

If yours is the model I think it is, it should have an ATI X600 graphics card, which gives you a better chance than models with NVidia graphics cards, for a possibility of MorphOS2.x being ported to it some day in the distant future (just in case you want to see what it looks and feels like, the demo is always free, but time limited to 30 minutes before a reboot is needed to give you full speed again).  One drawback of getting the G5 model of iMac, instead of the newer Intel Core2Duo models is that the Intel models run WinUAE and Amiga emulation much better than the G5 and E-UAE.

Lastly, I am usually very wary of eBay sellers that live so close by, but still refuse to allow you to pick up your won auctions in person.  It can be nothing more sinister than the seller not wanting to bother with trying to arrange a time to meet with you, or the seller has had bad luck in the past where the buyer changes his/her mind after seeing the item in person, or worst case, the G5 iMac is in bad physical condition (or does not work at all) and the seller does not want you to know where he/she lives after the sale, so you can't bother him/her afterward and try to get a refund, or some kind of compensation to resolve a less than perfect, or less than described item.  Hopefully you won't have any such problem, but I know how you feel when the seller won't allow you to pick up your item, no matter how close you are to them and you are forced to pay the shipping.  Another reason that some sellers will not allow local pick up of your won auction item is because they have added a few pound/dollars/euros to the shipping cost to pay them for their time to box it up and take it to the shipping company and they might not want to lose that few extra dollars/pounds/euros because they did not get as much from the auction as they would have liked to get.

Good luck with your new computer purchase.  Now what are you going to do with that G4 iMac 800MHz?  It has a very unique case and monitor design, some hate it and others love it.  Too bad it could not run MorphOS2.x for you due to the graphics card inside it as well as other drivers probably.  800MHz G4 is plenty fast for MorphOS2.6 and you could have gotten some good use from it for a few more years.

Might be a wee bit too late now as the polls closed and I'd probably get more flack from folk who wanted to vote that way in the first place and who then chose something else...

If you'd care to change it then feel free to do so, maybe best just to consign this one to the archives though... :)

Now there is problem that I already voted AmigaOS 1.3 and I can not change my vote... not big deal tho but the original poll was more useful. When it comes to the original AmigaOS I am using 1.3 only.

@itix

Piru voted for 3.1, but it's probably a fair assumption that you both use MorphOS more. Just mentally subtract 1 from 1.3 and 1 more from 3.1 and add them to the MorphOS option :)

If you do that, it doesn't change 3.9 as first place, in fact, it increases it's lead over 3.1

No it really isn't the same thing. The original poll was about AmigaOS. The option for MorphOS and AROS were added later on. I really wonder what use is a poll that has options added after the fact? The poll result is now useless as there is no way of see only the results before and after the new options.

The correct way to handle situation like this would be to have a new vote with title "Which Amigoid OS is Used Most", and to have the correct options to begin with.

Even then, it would likely get dismissed by most who already voted in the first poll ("didn't I already vote in that poll?").

So whose great idea was it to modify the poll anyway? Well done, you made a mess out of it.

Seriously, I doubt anybody really cares that much. Aside from the people that complained at the start, which is why the additional options were added. It's an ad-hoc poll on a forum, not a piece of market research. It was never going to be genuinely indicative of anything anyway.

Even if we moved all the known MOS users that have voted for other versions to the MorphOS column, 3.9 would still be far and away in the lead.

Ok, for all those people that are bothered that the poll was changed to include options they may have otherwise voted for and wish to have their votes recast, I have 2 options:

1) I make the poll anonymous so the inconsistency between names and counts is abrogated, users send me a PM to say what they would have voted for and I reassign their votes accordingly. It isn't voting in a new president, so a Bush style Florida vote remix is fine by me

2) I close the thread and open a new one with all the options already available and you can all cast your votes again.

3.1 mainly here. Really enjoy its speed compared to 3.9, although like Cammy, I do have a 3.9 partition I rarely use on my 25mhz 030 machine. 1.3 on the A1000 and 3.1 on both the A2000 and A3000.

I'd like to get MorphOS back on a real machine (a nice Mac for instance). Had the Efika and it was "fun" for a few minutes, but its RAM limitation kept me from taking the machine seriously at all.

Ditto, I voted for MorphOS when it was added as it's what I'm currently using the most due to having two old Macs to put it on.

Now that AROS 68k is getting some long deserved loving if I was asked the same question in a couple of weeks my answer might be different.

I guess, despite all the changes in the poll, there is one conclusion to be drawn:

Nobody voted for AmigaOS 4.0, so it means that OS4 on Classics sucks bigtime compared to older OSes.

I wonder if this says anything about the viability of the forthcoming OS4.1 for Classics?

I doubt that this poll reflects anything meaningful, if that's what you mean Karlos.

How about a poll on which OS posters use as a primary OS?

AOS4, AROS and MorphOS numbers would have to be higher with that, but you'd probably have to add Windows, Mac OS, asnd Linux options for many of those who post here that don't use an Amiga related OS on their primary system.

4.1 was the real deal.

(Apparently)

Ok, 3... that's Me, ClusterUK and someone else... Hmmm... :)

Its a tossup 3.1, or aros, I play alot of old games, I voted 3.1 though.

Franko,
What have you got against MorphOS compatible Macs?
Your G4 wasn't a supported model and now you're buying a G5 model that isn't likely to be supported in the future.

How can we prove to you the obvious superiority of MOS if you keep buying Macs that you can't run the OS on?

Your existing one is not too slow to run MorphOS, it is just not supported by MorphOS due to missing drivers for the graphics hardware (and perhaps other bits). Speed wise, an 800MHz G4 ought to run MorphOS extremely well. The 800MHz G4 in my A1 runs OS4.1 very nicely and that's on rather less well designed hardware than the G4 Mac. MHz for MHz I'd expect the G4 Mac to outperform the A1 and since MorphOS is, I believe, heavily optimised for G4 (liberal use of altivec) with a supported Mac, you should have no trouble.

Karlos is dead on with that. I'm currently using a 933Mhz processor in my Powermac under MorphOS 2.6. While I do have a 1.8 Ghz Sonnett upgrade coming soon, I'm not in any way disappointed with how the slower G4s operate under MOS.
Because its decended from a tight compact OS, MorphOS is more responsive than OSX.

About the only thing I miss is the wider selection of browsers (OWB is not bad, but I miss Opera and Firefox).

The GFX board in it is an Radeon X600 XT...

Full Specs can be found here...

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac_g5_2.1_20.html

It's bought now so I'll just have to wait and see if it's in perfect condition like the seller claimed, just hope it's not like the one I bought before on ebay that had a tiny 2.5" inch laptop HD stuck to the shielding with brown parcel tape. Got my money back in the end (£399) but it was a lot of hassle...

One of these days I'll buy the right machine and give MorphOS a try, think I'd better ask here in future before making any more non Amiga purchases... :)

Reckon I'll end up keeping the G4 and add it to all my other stuff that I can never bare to part with... :)

I didn't want to infer that we had some kind of superior knowledge about hardware.

For all I know, you may find OSX preferable to MorphOS.

But since your primary experience has been with Amigas, I think you'd find MOS very familiar.

Frankly, I think anyone with an Amiga background, were they to give MorphOS a try, would come away with a positive impression.

I thought G4s were pretty slow too, but they're actually pretty capable. It's OSX, its a serious resource pig.Using the processor I have installed right now (the 933Mhz), video under OSX simply wasn't fast enough (even for simple Flash animation).
Now I can view most common files without stutter and I anticipate being able to view 720p files once I upgrade the processor.

When G5 support is introduced, I expect MOS to be able to display anything up to 1080p resolutions.

Interesting,
Outside 3.1 and 3.9, the most used OS' are PPC based (AOS4.1 and MOS).

With all the posts suggesting a shift to X86, you might expect more AROS users to vote for their OS.

MorphOS only has driver support for certain models of Mac. The Quicksilver range of G4 towers is the best supported of them, outside of the 1.25GHz eMac model.

It's the existence of God that's questionable (at least according to Steven Hawking).

And to go completely off tangent, here's a quote from Frank Zappa I'm fond of.

The Bible tells us God made us to be just like him.

Then God is dumb.

"Wolfbot"? ;) That's amuzing. I'm still trying to figure out how Andreas indexs and keeps track of all those references.
I've asked him about it, but he won't reveal his secrets to me. If it is just recall, then he very well might be cybernetic.
Still, I've learned not to question him (on most things) and since he defers to Frank (Pega-1 @ MorphZone) I definately don't question Frank.

With such sharp minds in our corner, I don't question my OS choice.

The G5 will give us the boost needed for really processor intensive tasks, but we're not going to get that for awhile. Meanwhile, I'm interested in seeing just how well the Sonnett upgrade I just ordered works.

Hard to believe but the tracking number that I got for the G5 I bought on ebay wouldn't work, so after trying to contact the seller since yesterday I finally got this reply just now...

Dear xxxxxx,

Hello,

I bought the postage online but this has not been posted as yet.
It will be taken to the Post Office this afternoon, after it has been
scanned in to the system the tracking number will work. Delivery
as per ebay auction is 48 hour so you should receive this on
Friday.

Regards

- xxxxxx xxxx

He didn't even mention the fact that the tracking number he has given me is not accepted on the couriers site as it's too long, even though I pointed this out to him.

Talk about crazy, the payment was cleared at the end of the auction on sunday afternoon, the ruddy things less than 7 miles (probably a less than 20 minute round trip) from my house and now I have to wait till Friday to get it, gimme a car boot sale any day...

How did you pay him Franko?
Hopefully, it was via some method you can request a charge back because it sounds like a scam.

Let us not jump to conclusions just yet!

You have to admit that the seller not allowing Franko to just pick up the system is a little weird. Then there's that tracking number issue.

I don't want to jump to conclusions, but hopefully Franko has made sure he's covered in case he is being taken advantage of.

Well, I've seen a fair number of people who don't do that, because they don't want to get into the whole "so how much less do I pay for shipping, since you aren't shipping it" argument, as they make money on the "handling" side.

Also, some people don't interact with other people in person much.

And finally, I've picked up stuff from people's houses sometimes and REALLY wished I had just paid to have them ship it..  There are some weird people out there..  :roflmao:

@ Iggy
Thank's for the concern, not to worry paid via paypal so I'm covered if it doesn't turn up. The guy seems genuine enough he's got a 100% feedback record and he's sold three identical machines this month with good feedback.

I'll need to check it out properly (if it arrives) and get my mate Ron who's an Apple service engineer to have a good look at it, as I reckon he might be putting them together himself having sold three this month already. As long as it arrives and works fine I'll be more than happy, if not ebay have always been very quick in returning my money if something goes wrong, just have to wait and see now... :)

Sorry, I shouldn't have even questioned on this. I know you're sharp enough to have this covered. And its been pretty rare that for me to experience bad transactions (especially with a seller with good feedback).
The only bad experience I've had recently was with a Radeon 9200 video card that I bought from a seller who offered a return policy. On plugging the card in, it damaged my motherboard.
After contacting the seller (who was PO'd that I'd posted negative feedback) I was inforfmed the card was untested and offered a return on the card.
Since postage back to the seller was higher than the cost of the card (and I was afraid he'd re-sell it to someone else) I took the loss. After all, the real loss was my motherboard.

I'm going to be really careful the next time I buy anything that could cause that kind of loss.

Really interesting to see OS3.9 taking such a lead while even the Classic Workbench version is too dead slow for most Amiga's, even 030 ECS machines.

Interesting,
Outside 3.1 and 3.9, the most used OS' are PPC based (AOS4.1 and MOS).

With all the posts suggesting a shift to X86, you might expect more AROS users to vote for their OS.

When I voted, the AROS option didn't exist. I selected OS3.9 running on WinUAE/Amikit.

Three votes have been recast from M68K AmigaOS versions to MorphOS. Anybody else want to change their mind?

Could you change my vote to AROS?

Yes.  You could guess which one I want my vote changed to, but I'll forget about my sarcasm for the moment and just ask you to change it to MorphOS.

If those results are an accurate representation of current Amiga users, over the past 10 years the NG Amgia flavours combined have only capture 30% of the market.......good grief Penfold!

That's just sily. Of course there's a Santa Claus.

It's the existence of God that's questionable (at least according to Steven Hawking).

I wonder if God believes in the existence of Steven Hawking?

I'm guessing no

I need you to confirm what your original vote was for before I can change it.

I'd prefer it if people just requested this by PM as I'm not exactly trawling this thread.

Whoo Hoo, it's arrived...

Just took delivery of the G5, the case is pretty badly scuffed and the screens was manky but it came up ok after a quick clean with UPVC cleaner. Haven't switched it on yet cos it's freezing, need to leave it room temperature for a while before I can see if it works. :)

Unusually it came with all the original install disks + the genuine iLife disks & a brand new remote, just need to hope it's working ok, fingers crossed... :nervous:

I've got a spare 500Gb HD, anyone know if I install this will the original Install disks that I've got setup/format this HD if I swap it for the 250GB one already in it. (never installed/set up a Mac HD Before)...

Well, I've just switched on the iMac, perfect picture no dead pixels everything was just like the seller said, only trouble is he hasn't told me what the admins password is and now I can't change anything until I get the password... :(

Anyone know if there is a way change or find out the password on a mac without knowing what the original one was... :)
