Title: Problem with an A1200

After remembering that there was an A1200 in the attic I had 5 minutes only to test it tonight and imediatley noticed that the disk drive LED doesn't work. From memory it did work until I took the machine apart to fit a 3.5"HD. The wires going to the PCB are all connected, anyone have any idea how to test if it's the motherboard or the LED unit itself?

I'm wanting to set this machine up as well as the A4000 to be a WHDload machine with an indivision and one of the new accelerators that are on the way.

Are you 100% sure you put the LED wiring back on correctly? Pretty easy to muck that up. Does Workbench load up from floppy? If so and you really suspect the LED might be bad (highly doubtful as that's probably the most robust part on any computer), try throwing 5VDC its way and see if it lights then. If it doesn't work one way, reverse your leads. They don't call it a "light emitting diode" for nothing as its sensitive to polarity.

If memory serves there is only one way the connector can go, but I'll double check it later. Can plugging it in the wrong way cause any damage?

Probably not. But maybe check for cold solder joints where the LED's are connected to the PCB. Next, try wriggling the connector and see if you get any signs of life. If so, suspect bad solder on the CPU board there OR a bad molex connector as achtung_bab suggested.

there is only one way you can plug in the led on the 1200 . what happened to 3 my 4 amiga 1200 is one wires came loose from little pcb board whould imagine thats the problem
also if the floppy cable around wrong way either end the floppy wont work or make clicking sound . so should be doing that at least.

I've had some 1200 led boards with defective traces on the board..  It appears the solder is adhering to the trace but isn't or the trace is not there and it just happened the blob of solder reached it slightly. resoldering them sometimes can fix them.
