Title: Where In The World...
Post by: Franko on November 05, 2010, 02:04:17 PM
Where In The World...

Just curious to get an idea of the where Amiga.org members are in the world. I of course couldn't put each country here separately, so instead I've just put them under a category that hopefully covers just about everyone. :)

Heck I've even had to lump Scotland in with the UK, quite a hard choice to make that one was... :)

Also the list is not a league table, so don't be offended at your position on the table it was purely random... :)

1) UK & Eire
2) Scandinavia
3) Europe
4) North America
5) South America
6) Australia & New Zealand
7) Asia & The Middle East
8) Africa North & South
9) The Poles North & South !
10) Somewhere Else...

I know, but we do allow for the American education system here, and therefore let you off with that line of thinking... :)

That's why we don't lump Americans & Canadians together, a far better education system here.... ;)

It's bad enough for me having to lump Scotland in with the UK, but even I wouldn't go as far a lumping in the UK with Europe. Thats why we still use £s and not Euros, were mostly a bunch of nationalistic anti Euro sceptics here... :biglaugh:

I never consider my European, so thanks for great poll choices Franko.

Yeah this £ and Euro will go on for years - we don't have even have the euro symbol on our keyboards thank god *spits*.

I really hope the EU fails - we are better off as separate countries looking after our own affairs.  Each EU member contributions billions (yes, billions) each year to be a member and for what in return?  So that MEPs can send their own children to private schools in Brussels, so that Bananas are straighter than straighter and greengrocers display their goods in metric, health and safety bs, prisoners being kept in hotels... so immoral...

Rant over, please continue as you were. >.>

The general education system here is not good, and it is getting worse, but we still have several of the top higher education and research institutions in the world.  And it's so much easier to get your Ph.D. in the UK than here in the US -- it's really quite an astonishing difference in the physical sciences!  I think that's true for the rest of Europe too.  ;-)

The education system in the UK is not much better to be honest. The lack of discipline in schools along with the dumbing down of all levels of exams in recent years just to achieve higher pass rate figures in government league tables, has only led to the sorry state of this country which is rapidly being overrun by the Neds & Chavs culture that has come of all this dumbing down & Political Correctness.

I think it's the same in most countries these day's but here in the UK it's a really big problem and not getting any better.

I actually live closer to Annapolis, so I have a few miles of relative driving sanity.  There are a lot of pluses though, theatre, music/concerts, art shows, drag strips, etc..

Of course - geographically - UK and scandinavia are part of Europe. As well as the left part of Russia and the northern continental part of Turkey. Gosh. And - by the way - the usual "EU bashing" is getting really boring. Even the brits work with the € since more than 20 years, everything you do, everything you sell, the whole british economy is based on the € since middle/end of the 80's. This has indeed nothing to do with that more or less funny coloured paper you use as money in the streets.

I won't - and, we won't. In the end this would mean some kind of national state'ism from pre-World-War-II. Our more or less high economic outcome in the EU (not "Europe") is based on the "EWG" from the late 50's/early 60's. Since then we are not "separate" anymore. Funny enough during the cold war Breshnew called the EWG/EU the "fourth reich" - they were well aware of the united economical (not political) strength of an associated western europe.

I can assure you the man or woman in the street here in the UK doesn't use the Euro on a daily basis (if ever), probably the only time any of us see some of this mickey mouse currency is when going on holiday, personally I've never even seen this toy money... :)

You know what the best thing would have been ?
Combine the UK, Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany together and then having that started with the Euro.
That would have been a winning combination, all large airports and shipping harbours together, way better then with all those eastern countries and south European countries in it.

That so many Brits are unable to comprehend that the British isles (and Scandinavia for that matter) is part of Europe, and that Europe is a geographical term and not a political one, says alot about their educational system.

I can't argue in this point, 'cos I feel it might be very near to my own opinion... ;-) But it is, as it is. Going backwards would be very, very dirty, so I still assume, that we shouldn't bother with "what could have been" but try to make the best of the situation. I'm still convinced that the EWG (and the following more political directed EU) is *the* masterplan for peace in Europe, especially for the smaller countries - even if a lot of strange things come out of Brussels...but, hey, our national governments aren't better, really.. :-)

...and yes we are all technically part of Europe even if we don't feel like it.
BTW I'm from Northern Ireland in case you're wondering.

Don't knock it, Having lived in the UK most of my life, the US (briefly) and The Netherlands, there is no contest as to where I'd go if given the choice*: easily The Netherlands.

*Actually if given the choice I'd go to France first, but maybe that's because I like latin girls ;-p

USA is great if you have money, otherwise you're completely F***ed.  Their poverty rates and social systems are really quite awful compared to Europe.  The US would be a nice place to live, but only with a good job.

Political Correctness is just hard left wing in disguise.  It doesn't seem to have caught on in France and I don't imagine the rest of Europe either.

So was I once, then I lived with it (the change over happened while I was living in Amsterdam).  One you've lived with it, it makes a hell of a lot of sense.

OTOH if we adopted the Euro we'd end up having our financial system being run by Germans.  The Germans have had financial stability for 65 years, The UK economy on the other hand has almost collapsed *twice* in the last 35 years.  Would I like to see the Uk economy run by the Germans?  Hell yes!  They do a lot better job than our bankers do.

UK people like to complain about Europe a lot but I'd much sooner live on mainland Europe than in the UK.  I don't remember the taxes being much higher but if they are you feel that get it back, their transport systems are cheaper and far better, their health system the same.  This is very unlike in the UK where you get the distinct impression that all your tax is going into someone's pocket and you don't get F*** all back.

Given the EU is very much "led" by Germany and France, I imagine it very much IS the masterplan for european peace. Thats how we always felt it in Denmark anyways

Scotland is located in a small hamlet in the southern most tip of Ireland, which in turn is located in an ashtray at the end of a public bar in Wales, all of which of course are located in an old ladies flowerpot somewhere in England which just so happens to be floating above the Isle of Wight right now... :)

@ MrMoonlight

On the train journey back home, my dad traded his piece of goalpost for a bit a the hallowed turf, which took pride of place in my mums back garden for many years. Unfortunately the weeds eventually took over and no-one could ever quite remember exactly which part of mums back garden was that wee bit of Wembly... :)

The atlas of the the world sure has changed since I was at School many old countries have either disappeared or split up or changed name since I passed my geography O'level (especially the European ones), still at the end of the day we all have one thing in common, were all Citizens Of The 3rd Rock From The Sun... :)

Czech Republic, which a lot of people think is a part of eastern Europe, while we proudly consider our country the heart of it. Not that it matters, though, we're basically one of those shitty small post-communist EU countries living off the rich and generous Germany, France, Benelux, UK etc etc.... :-)

Definetly central Europe in my view.

The term "eastern Europe" is still largely associated with countries that were part of the Warszawa pact + Jugoslavia. Or alternatively, any country with slavic speaking population + the Baltics, Hungary, Romania, and eastern Germany ofcourse.

What i find amusing is that there are still alot of people who say "Czechoslovakia" :)

I know, but when the EU opened all it's borders there were a quite a number of Polish folk who came to work here and one thing I noticed as I made friends with quite a number of them, is that they would buy any Amiga hardware they could as well as stuff like mobile phones and send or take it back home to Poland with them.

From the Polish friends that I made, it would seem that there is quite a big Amiga Scene in Poland these days, could be one of the reasons why the UK doesn't have so many now, the UK users sold all their Amiga hardware just to make a quick buck and now there having to buy it back via ebay... :)
