Finally decided to take the plunge on a 32GB iPad. Best Buy had a mint, 2 day old return for $540 ($60 off retail), so what the heck. While I was playing around with it, queued up Amiga.org on it to see how it would look in both portrait and landscape mode. Quite impressive, especially as you can "zoom" in and out real easy. Anywho, I must have left the webpage up on the 'Amiga brand name for sale' thread and walked away to look at some of the accessories.
That's when I hear one of the employees exclaim: "Okay, who was the last one playing around with the iPad". lol  I walked over and said 'I was'. He then started to ask what this spanish lesbian business was all about. He was on the page with the two chicks kissing. LMAO!  I explained, no, no no... that this is an Amiga site, but spanish lesbians have been known to want to purchase the dot com.
Of course then, he looks at me all puzzled. I said: "You know... the Commodore Amiga... best thing to happen to computing since all this trendy Apple crap".  lol  He says: "I remember the Commodore 64, but Amiga? What's that"?
I spent about a minute sounding like an Amiga spokesperson, explaining the virtues, the firsts and all that. Guy just shrugged and said: "wow, that's cool" and proceeded to check out A.org

I've seen people typing up emails on their iphone, they seem to be quite focused and agile. Simply push a button on it to do something else.
I'd be afraid to drop it, like I see people dropping their phones a lot. A netbook has the advantage of sitting on your lap.

Time will tell, but it seems comfortable enough to me. Large enough to sit in your lap, in your hands or on a table. I did get the $40 Apple branded case for it that's super thin, lightweight and acts as a prop so you can stand it up. I considered for a brief moment spending another $400 and getting the new Airbook, but I wanted a different computing experience and the iPad fits that bill really well. Especially its screen size without a cumbersome clamshell keyboard scenario. Really just wanted the most portable, legible "computer for the net" and this is it.
iPod touch and iPhones are waaaaay too small for this big guy  ;)

That was the problem for me trick out an ipad and you'll soon spend as much as a macbook. I got a fujitsu laptop instead Core i3, 2.4 ghz, 4 gig ram, 540 gb hd, 15" express card and hdmi. for $529 instead. Ipad is Too expensive for what amounts to about $200 of actual tech.

Yeah, yeah, yeah - we all know Apple stuff is a little more expensive, but I like 'em for what they are. Besides, PC ownership at this point is not an option for me. I hate Windows with a passion. 95 was "okay" or tolerable back in the day. Forced to use it at work (XP), I will not be bringing *that* experience home with me. To each their own as usual :)
BTW: this tablet styled iPad thing works pretty well! Just need to get used to the condensed on-screen keyboard is all. Best new "toy" I've treated myself to since the ROKU box. Lol

Thinking about buying an iPad for my wife for Christmas.  I own a 1st model Macbook Air and it is nice but now almost 3 years old.  Wife and I battled over it when we compute in bed.  :hammer::hammer:
So, get an iPad and we will battle over that now.  hehehe
I played with one at the Apple Store and it is rather nice.  Fits in the hand nice, lots of dock options for making it a mini desktop setup if need be or watching flicks on it.
Rather nice piece of "kit" as those from overseas always say.  That word kit always makes me smile.  :)

I think I'd go with an Android tablet should I find the need for a keyboardless thing, I bought a cheap Motorola Android phone a few months ago and have enjoyed hacking around with it and throwing newer ROMs onto it. Finally retired my Windows Mobile phone.

iPad is also great for reading comic books, magazines and PDFs. It just feels "right".

My wife took my iPad after one day.

If not for the Mac, I bet Commodore would still be around and filling the "alternative system" niche that Apple fills today. I reward Apple for that by not buying any of their products... the closed, oppresive attitude they have towards their customers makes that boycott extremely easy, too.

			-
As usual, I am in awe at Apple's hardware design, I really love their products (that includes iPhone, iPad and all Mac computers), and I also really love how smoothly everything operates and integrates with everything else.  There's no doubt about it that Apple provide the best USER experience in the world with their products right now.  For me, they are right on the money with that.
However, I despise Apple products.  I despised them in the early 90's, and vowed never to get one.  Today I have an iPhone because I was sucked in by the simply beautiful design and the slick operation of it, but I totally and utterly regret my decision to buy one and it has convinced me all the more that I was right to make my initial pledge not to buy Apple.
Why?
Well, the simple reason is that I'm a tinkerer.  I like to customize stuff, I like to tinker with stuff, and I see myself as very computer literate - certainly computer literate enough to be trusted to make my own decisions about what applications I do and don't run on my machine.  After all, I grew up with the Amiga and tinkering is the Amiga way.
But Apple deny me this most basic of experiences.  I'm not allowed to customise, I'm not allowed to tinker, and I'm certainly not allowed to get underneath the bonnet of the things.  I can only run the applications that Apple say I can, and as a user I'm not allowed to run programs that give me access to any kind of programming language.  Not even C64 BASIC.
This is why I hate the Apple experience, and it is also why I'll never buy a MAC.  But their product design... yeah I have to conceed that they are the best in the world.  A cross between Apple's product design and Amiga's "can do" attitude to computing would be the greatest computer ever.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I really HATE iTunes with a passion.  iTunes must be the most infuriating application ever written.

			-
What? You can totally customize a Mac computer, just that their "appliance" bits (ie: little hand held toys) need to be broken is all. A good tinkerer is not hampered by such trivial things as there's always workarounds ;-)

			-
Everytime I see an iPad all I can think of is those gigantic television remotes they sell at drugstores. Giant iPod anyway?

			-
Apple consistently delivers solid products, but there's usually a better alternative if you're willing to seek it out.
The iPad seems to be the only worthwhile tablet atm, though, although RIM's PlayBook is shaping up to be a worthy competitor.

			-
the iPad seems to bulky for me to enjoy..I mean if it can't fit easily into a pocket then it's just too much a hassle for me to lug around all day....if I have to lug around that pad thing I'd rather have a full featured notebook with proper keyboard

			-
Somebody I work with takes great delight in going into the Apple store in Cardiff and leaving all the iPhones and iPads on porn sites an the relocking then :)

			-
Certainly not a one size fits all product. Does it come with a lot of free apps? That would sweeten the deal. Other than that technology is moving so fast, if I hold out another two years the bells and whistles on pocket sized gadgets will have doubled... and the price halved.

Do you mean like "jail breaking"? :) yeah I've done that.  It's better but it's not a great workaround, and at the end of the day I don't want to be made to feel guilty about wanting to tinker and customise.  I want that behaviour to be actively promoted.
I take it as an insult to my intelligence that Apple restrict what I can and can't do with the product.  It's as if they view their customers as idiots.  The general user probably doesn't care about that, but for someone like me it's a total insult.
And that's why I hate Apple.

I too think iTunes is one of the worst pieces of software I've had the misfortune to ever come across. If you simply want to listen to some MP3's then it's far less hassle to have your MP3 player hooked up to an amp than it is just to get iTunes to do anything. Id better not even mention what I think of iDVD & iMovie as it will surely only offend... :)

Sorry but I consider myself an expert tinkerer, but when it comes to my iMac G4 be it hardware or software their just isn't the scope to tinker with the ruddy things. Not to mention the never ending 'application not responding' and 'application unexpectedly quit' crap you've got to put up with. Apple stuff may look cool but that's about it... :)
(5 months of using an iMac is enough to convince me never to buy another Apple product... :( )

				Hey Franko,
That's why you want a G4 Mac that is MorphOS compatible.
Before Powermac support was introduced for MOS, I slow convinced the G4 was a dreadfully underpowered CPU. Actually, OSX is just really resource intensive.
All the video formats that would stutter or not run work perfectly under MorpHOS.
I'm looking forward to finding an upgrade for my 933 Ghz G4, but right now my system performs SO much better since I ditched OSX (yes I actually removed OSX from the system).

Not really, it doesn't do anything you can't do on a P3 800mhz Tablet PC, and it can't do anything Flash based on the internet (I kid you not) so kind of something for Apple fan boys in my book. Especially with the RRP in the UK. Also it can not do HD movies/TV either.
I'll spend my money on a classic car for my collection and use an old grubby Fuji Tablet PC :)
@save2600
As for trying to educate people about Amiga, careful b00tdisk will be on your case and putting his size 4s in his mouth again

You aren't going to walk into Best Buy and find a better tablet than the iPad, which is more to the point.
Personally, I have little use for tablets of any sort, since most of what I do on a computer requires either a keyboard or a joystick, but for some people, it's exactly what they want, or so Apple has led them to believe.
