So I subscribed to PC hardware forum hoping to see lots of DIY threads and people asking for help. Instead I see many posts about someones over the top upgrade. There is no follow on with some game fps or 3D rendering times and subjective feelings. Just boasting along the lines of "Look how big my one is!"
I'm afraid the obsession with 'keeping up with jones' is still rife in the PC enthusiast. If I got a 6 core i7 my reaction would be "Is that all. My Amiga 2000 could dazzle me with 3 second boots and fast file compression 20 years ago."
What do you think?

Might be that you need to go to a different type of forum. Perhaps the modding community might be more for you?
As for "penis envy". How is it really any different than someone boasting about their PPC equipped A4000 with all the trimmings in their sig?

There's some of the "must have faster more" but I find since I don't play hardcore 3D games, it really doesn't matter anymore.
My crappy dual core is fast enough for me.

Vanitas Vanitatum = Vanity of vanities, and the PC users much, because they not suffer penis' complex, is as the people with the cars, the house, the mobile phone, pure and simple vanity to want to pretend to have money and do not actually possess.
Bill Gates doesn't presumed of PCs.

Well you don't need 8 cores to read Facebook, which is what a lot of people do with their computers. There is a sizable segment that are happy with Atom processors. Not everyone has an obsession with cores. But that being said, I'd never go back to just 4 cores, but, like many others here, I'm a power user...

Another question is, do penis enthusiasts suffer PC envy?
Answers on a postcard...

Penis enthusiats are preoccupied with uptime, so I would imagine a PC that can stay crash-free for any length of time might make them a bit envious.
