Hi all ive just bought a fully working mac g4 (not a mini) with original keyboard, mouse and monitor. What i want to know is, is it possible to install amiga os 4.1 onto it ?
TIA
-
Nop. You can use MorphOS 2.6 though...
-
no there in no fully working official or otherwise version of AOS4.1 for mac mini. MorphOS 2.6 is availiable though
-
Noarrgh!
-
So does the Morph OS support any amiga software/games?

Applications and games not hitting the amiga hardware (that is "OS friendly") work directly.
See here for instance http://morphos.lukysoft.cz/en/
If something doesn't work you can obviously use UAE to run those specific titles.

For the Mini (which isn't what you have), there is a thing called "Moana", by which I believe you could bring up OS4.0 (not 4.1.x though) to at least a running state (although I don't think there are driver support for all HW controllers?). I have downloaded it myself, but never bothered to try it out...
For other kinds of Mac, you are completely out of luck. :(
Good news is that you could try out MorphOS (since beyond Pegasos 1 & 2 and Efika, MorphOS also supports eMac's (really cheap), Mac mini G4's (really small and powerful), Power Mac G4's (expandable, cheap and/or powerful), and soon PowerBook (laptop!) :)) completely for free!
:)
Edit: http://morphos-team.net/downloads.html
So what Mac do you have?

@carvedeye
When you have installed MorphOS on it, please consider checking out "Pack Ultimate" (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=55074) to really get going on the fly! :)

It's sad that the answer to "can I run OS4" is so often "no, but Aros and Morphos work"
Come on Hyperion, support some hardware already!
-
But then OS4 wouldn't be so l33t!

If you are referring to OS 3.x software MorphOS probably runs this even better than OS 4.x.
MorphOS can run 68k code, WarpOS Code, PowerUp Code and of course MorphOS code. Also Warp3D apps run directly on the system using MorphOS 3D API Rave3D. A few OS4 apps run with the use of an OS4 compability wrapper. For hardware hitting stuff there is EUAE which emulates entie old Amiga systems. Ambient (the "workbench" of MorphOS) can launch adf files directly with an apropriate EUAE configuration (predefines A500 and A1200).
There is also a nice set of MorphOS games (And applications).
And the best of all: It is free to test. Just download the demo and play around with it directly from the LiveCD (or install it on HD). All you ned to test is a little time and an .iso file. the demo is not restricted except it slows massivle down 30min after boot up. Press reset and you have the next 30 time (you can do this as often as you want, you only need to register when you want to use it for more than 30 min w/o the need of a reboot).
-
No, Amiga OS 4 still not, only MorphOS 2.5 and 2.6

Absolutely. If it wasn't for the fact that I could try MorphOS for free I never would have even bothered with it. Within 10 minutes of trying it out I bought a license.

I can understand that. I looked at AOS4, but after installing MOS on a Mac I'm inclined to agree - its worth the license fee.
MorphOS works great, its a little faster than AOS4, and it has some pther advantages (mentioned by past posters) over the alternatives.
Really if you've got a Powermac, MorphOS worth condidering. Once I tried it, I decided to abandon OSX (my initial idea had been to dual boot the system).
Now, instead, I'm booting Ubuntu and MOS.

Sorry guys (and gals) but i mean its an apple powerpc g4 :)

Erm yes ???
Thats what everybody is talking about here.....
MorphOS does work not only on the MacMini but also on every G4-tower with AGP-graphics.
Just download the ISO, insert it, press C while booting and see for yourself.

What, even matrox and nVidia AGP cards? I thought it was only Radeon?
-
Nitpicking:
Sure it works with every G4-Tower-Mobo, wether it works with a specific GFX-card is another matter.

Jackpot! That's a fine maschine for MorphOS. If you happen to have an nVidia card or Matrox gfx card though, you'll need to replace it with an ATI gfx card (use a Mac original card, not a flshed x86 card), but generally all G4 Apple PowerMacs are supported by MorphOS.
Just do the following:
Grab an empty CDR, point your browser to http://www.morphos.de, start the download, burn the image to the CDR and boot off your Powermac G4 straight from CD into the live system (or install MorphOS on the hdd).
If you have questions about MorphOS just ask on the usual forums or visit #MorphOS on freenode.

Hi, I'm sure you saw. or heard, that the xperimental Moana loader ran OS4.1 on a Mac Mini but this was not an official port and was quite buggy so the answer is simply NO; however, you can happily run MorpHOS on some old Mac's so check out thier homepage for more info.
If you want to run AmigaOS4.1 update 2 then you need to run it on either:
- classic systems with PPC cards- soon to be out
- Peg II's
- Sam440ep (by ACube)
- Sam440ep flex (by ACube)
- Sam460ex (" ")- soon to be out
- AmigaOne X1000 (byA-Eon)- hopefully soon to be out
Also, if you have an old PC lying around you might want to try AROS as it's been progressing nicely lately and runs on many different x86 architectures
