Title: New Amiga Website Launched - AmigaOS.net!
Post by: djrikki on October 28, 2010, 11:35:29 AM
After many months of painstaking work and research its finally here, AmigaOS.net! (http://www.amigaos.net)

The purpose behind AmigaOS.net is simple - present quality current Amiga software and highlight hardware availability on and for the Amiga platform in a unique way to help attract new potential users and also ex-Amigans to the Amiga.

2011 heralds the arrival of the first in a completely new range of next-generation Amiga hardware, the AmigaOne X1000!  Want to find out more about this innovative new product?  Go to http://www.amigaos.net/hardware.html.

AmigaOS has so much to offer users in 2010, smooth and reliable internet browsing with an array of browsers available including OWB and if you like FireFox you will love Timberwolf which is coming soon to the Amiga platform.
Heard of OpenOffice?  Sure of course you have, active development has already begun bringing this world class office suite to the Amiga - expected availability May-July 2011.

"So tell me what else can it do?"  I can send and receive email… from a neat selection of email clients… "RSS?"… straight through your favourite browser… "And Artwork packages?"… great selection for home users, perhaps you've heard of Gimp or Photogenics?… "Can I upload using FTP?"… Yes!… "And Facebook?"…. Yes!… "err YouTube?"… Of course!… "Can I play all those classic Amiga-games if I really wanted to?"…. why yes! quite easily… "Can it multi-task?"… yes we practically invented it!

Currently under development and arriving soon on AmigaOS.net will be a dedicated Wiki for AmigaOS aimed at new users with little or no knowledge about the operating system.  This Wiki acting as a help system for AmigaOS will, in detail, cover every aspect of how to use the operating system, from performing mundane tasks such as organising your files, installing software through to configuring the dock bar and a whole lot more.
If you would like to contribute to this on-going project please send an email to info@amigaos.net.

Alongside the launch of the website will be an extensive email marketing campaign promoting the website and the virtues of choosing an Amiga up until the end of the 2010.  If you would like to receive this newsletter to forward on to your friends please send an email to marketing@amigaos.net and enter 'subscribe' in the subject heading.

Probably because this site is not AmigaOS4 only so doesn't count.

Yep, and AmigaOS.net looks pretty painful to navigate around with plenty of manufacturers links.
Not a very well constructed website.
Looks like it serves primarily to sell AOS4 related hardware and software.

Hopefully it will improve.

I'm not so sure about the design, but the content is very good. :)

Change the name to AmigaOS4.net so it will be keeping in spirit with the site.

I wrote a 100% AmigaOS game which is not listed on AmigaOS.net even though it uses 100% AmigaOS Fonts with 100% AmigaOS Gadgets displayed on a 100% AmigaOS Screen using 100% AmigaOS multitasking.

Yet somehow a bunch of LinuxOS games are prominently listed.

???

And please dont take it the wrong way, but I suggest you change the title that appears on the browser tab. You should just eliminate all those xxxxx in that title, as it may confuse people that browse the internet with many tabs at the same time, as they will think your site is pr0n related. :)

I don't own OS4 myself but years ago several ppl on AmigaWorld.net reported it to work on OS4 after they stopped overclocking their ramchips and disabled the buggy OS4 Screenblanker.

It should run seamlessly using glUAE or RunInUAE under OS4.1 though I can't confirm this myself yet...still an awesome game and should be on the site IMHO

Does it run on  MorphOS.  Serious question
I don't have MorphOS because I am an idiot. :insane:  Many many years ago I was repeatedly offered a Pegasos for $100.00 because I was an Amiga software developer.  But I felt guilty to accept such a great offer because I did not feel really committed to MorphOS at that time.  Many years later, after that developer support program had ended I realized I should have been greedy and accepted the offer! Doh!   At the very very least I could have done tests and experiments on it!

So all I can go on now, is what I am told.  I am told that it does not run on MorphOS for 3 separate reasons:
Reason #1: AmigaOS WaitTOF() does not work on MorphOS.  This really annoyed me.  But WaitTOF() was broken on WinUAE for many years also so I eventually rewrote the whole game not to use WaitTOF() anywhere.  The game now uses my own WaitVBlank() function so this problem is now fixed.

However there were 2 other reasons, which I can't recall OTTOMH why it wouldn't run on MOS.  I theoretically know how to go around all MOS problems but it requires a huge amount of work.

The simple answer to your question is:
AFAIK no.

Take this as constructive criticism, the site is amazingly bad.

Others say you are just promoting the sales of systems, but I can't be sure you are even accomplishing that - when I click on this huge picture of a Sam 440 EP, it takes me nowhere.

Oh, there is a text link at the bottom - why are you sending confusing navigation signals and forcing users to learn your site?

Then there is the gawdiness issue, just so many colors.

You know transparency and drop downs can be used elegantly to spruce up a functionality and add some class to a site, but you didn't accomplish that.

You have links that don't do anything, you have pages that make no sense.

Well I wanted to be slightly more constructive than just saying it looks bad, just in case you were looking to improve the site based on feedback.

Thanks! New Amiga websites are always welcome, IMO.  Try to ignore the most hyper-critical of Amiga.org users.  I had no trouble navigating the site -- and I saw that it was not entirely OS4 either, with some games that will run in OS3.1.

More or less yes. But usability also depends on how heavy the game is. Remember, there is no JIT available for EUAE. A game demanding a 060 and AGA could be a bit too heavy for many EUAE setups.

And if you are a bit inteested in MorphOS still, with a cheap PowerMac G4 or eMac the option to play around with it is good now. Some ppl were lucky to pick up PowerMacs or eMacs for virtually no cash or even for free.

No. Anything released for WarpUP/PowerUP won't, for a start.

Really should be named "AmigaOS4.net". What's the harm in being accurate?

You don't have that kind of authority, you're just a "Grunt".

No offence.

Yes, as it is very biased against OS3.9.

I think the site its great! It has a lot of things for people who lost track of AmigaOS and want to get into the current state of the action. I like the customization group and this was the place where I first heard of Aquaria, which is quite amazing and a good way to show off what your little SAM is capable of. (This was when the site was in beta. I keep coming back at it.)

Keep up the great work!

Hint: Internet Explorer 7 (we have to use it at work) makes a mess when presenting the page.

Well, if you are going to play with semantics...

Remind us all exactly which WOS/PUP applications worked without OS3.x. Or failing that, remind us how either of these kernels were able to run as freestanding operating systems without OS3.x being involved.

IIRC, both kernels needed Kickstart 3.1 just to get out of bed. WOS and PUP may have been multitasking kernels in their own right, but they were totally dependent on OS3.x for everything from initialisation upwards.

Total Chaos does not use PUP or WUP.
I run Total Chaos under the WinUAE AVM on a semi-regular basis.
So in theory it should "work" under the EUAE AVM if EUAE has been produced using optimized code, has no bugs, can do what it claims, etc.
