Title: Remember The Settlers?
Post by: the_leander on October 25, 2010, 09:38:48 PM
It was and remains my all time favourite game.

Well, it seems that someone else out there liked it a lot too.

So they created their own open source version - Widelands (http://wl.widelands.org/wiki/DownloadPage/).

I have to say, graphically it's better than what we saw in Settlers 1, it runs smoothly and seems to include just about everything that made the original fun.

Available for Linux, Mac and Windows.

Enjoy!

That is fantastic!

Pity there isn't a Morphos version available.

The Settlers would have to be one of the few games I put in over 100 hours in, including multiplayer!

The graphics were superb considering there was never an AGA version!

It had gameplay.....it was like Dune 2 but with Castles!  An Amiga classic!

You'll like this then, very much like the original in terms of controls, although I have to say the greater use of contextual menus does speed up things like building paths etc :)

But yeah, much like practically every movie sequel ever made, the follow ups for Settlers sucked hard.

Nothing to stop someone doing an SDL port - It's both open source and designed to be portable, afteral :)

This one offers network play, and I shudder to think how many hours I poured into Settlers over the years lol :D

I forsee many many hours lost due to this game.

Oh hey it'll run on my netbook too :D

--edit--

Found a Haiku compatible port here (http://zeta-games.com/remository/view-details/6-strategy/6-widelands.html).
