The HD floppy in my A4000D has recently picked up the bad habit of sporadically "greeting" a disk, when no disk is present. To mitigate, I can grab the sensor arm with needle-nose pliers and manipulate it a bit. Then the drive behaves until the next disk is inserted and removed, then it starts again.
So it seems the lubricating the arm which extends out of the switch would fix the issue, but I am leery of using something like WD-40. What would make a proper lube for this: mineral oil, WD-40, electric motor (or machine) oil, or what?

I'd go with a bit of heavy grease.

I'd go with a bit of heavy grease.
Like that sticky/gooey white lithium stuff? Seems the brown heavy grease hardens over time. I'd try the lithium grease or lighter machine oil maybe.

For a more home based remedy, you could try applying a bit of Petroleum Jelly.
I find it works quite good for repairs of this kind. Easy to apply and not too messy. A little bit goes a long way.
The lithium grease is a good recommendation also. you can even get it in a spray can. The spray can come with a tube so that you can control where it goes. It's a bit expensive, but a can will last a really long time (I've had the same can for 7-8 years) because you really need to use so little of it.
