Title: Sigh What have you accomplished in a decade?
Post by: ElPolloDiabl on October 21, 2010, 10:59:30 AM
So the decade is nearly over. What have you accomplished in ten years?:):):)
And what do you hope to see happen in the next ten.

Put me down for alive and in good health. Amiga has sunk, but re-emerged with more realistic goals. I still haven't become a veteran programmer. More later...

The decade isn't over until December 31st, 2019, but I'll play anyway.
I've done shockingly little in the last decade, especially the last five years.
I turned 30 a few years ago, and resolved to try new things whenever I get the opportunity, but that didn't amount to much.  I've learned new things and had some fun, but not nearly as much as in previous decades.

My Amiga: about 10 years unaltered except X-surf added. PC-side (because of digicams): 6 years, 4th laptop. That's progress...

How do you mark decades where you live?  I can tell you how we do it here.
...
80's: January 1st 1980 - December 31st 1989
90's: January 1st 1990 - December 31st 1999
00's: January 1st 2000 - December 31st 2009
10's: January 1st 2010 - December 31st 2019
...and so forth

A decade is 10 years anywhere, however people want to apply the term decade to a particular 10 year range is their problem.

As for Amiga accomplishments in the last 10 years, it only took about 2 years for me to run the hardware gamut from A1000 to A4000T and beyond, various nice third party expansions included.  I think I've got the bug mostly out of my system and will probably stick with the few I have left.

He didn't say the 00's are nearly over, he said 'the' decade is nearly over, as in the first decade of 21st century. It started on 1st January 2001 and ends on 31st December 2010.

Unless you don't follow the internationally accepted standard Gregorian calendar.

Well, in the last ten years I've gotten back into Amigas, stil had my 1200 and a 500...
Funny thing is, even though I used to run a BBS, play games and do some programming last time round, I reckon I'm enjoying them more this time around!

Decimal starts with 1. I believe binary starts with 0.

tl;dr version?

Married, two kids, divorced, homeless, rehoused.

None of the above ever again.

Quite honestly the last ten years has been an unmitigated disaster for me personally.

Early 2000 I was asked to join a project to create a new operating system. Today it's at version 2.6. I am very happy that I've been part of the ride and look forward to taking the project even further.

On a professional level I did a complete career rework and changed to a new field: Information Security. Best decision I've made really, the field is really interesting and there's always new things to learn. You get to see places and systems that you would otherwise only hear about. Future prospects are good as well: regardless of new technologies and platforms the security issues will be always be there and pentesting is needed. This career change lead to a new job, moving to the capital area and some other rather major changes.

Of course there has been some bumps along the way but especially the last 3 years have been great.

The Gregorian calendar system does not reference decades.  I think you are confusing the Proleptic Gregorian Calendar(retrospective to 1582) with the current, in relation to the Gregorian origin that year 1 AD which follows year 1 BC  is the start of the calendar system thus the confusion of when centuries end.  This confusion actually stems from the Julian and Roman method of counting the current year in recitations.  Eg: we are in our 2011th year.  Because we no longer do that in modern counting and also because it makes us older than we really are, the modern norm is 0-9 = the decade set and not 1-0.

As for a decade it is a modern reference for that to default to the years 0-9 inclusive of a tens group.  EG: 60s, or Naughties.

Reference: Wikipedia, and my head, and Calculator on WB1.3.

BTW, And back on topic, I got back into Amiga in the Mid Naughties after dropping off in 98.  I also headed up the greenfields setup of a new businesses IT from scratch in 02-03.  That was fun.  Now I just tell other people how to do it and keep them on the rails when they start straying..

I got Married & we bought our first House.

We've travelled about 30 countries over 4 continents.

I've put on and lost 4 stone in weight!  (the latter was the accomplishment it takes a lot more effort to loose it again!)

And recently found again a hobby I'd forgottern about, yep you guessed it!  In just the last year I have built up quite an accomplished Amiga collection from an Accelerated A600 up to a Full Fat PPC A1200 :)

Now I just need to get a decent job and stop slacking off in this dead end one :hammer:

Steve.

Been a strange sort of decade for me ( well stranger than normal...) :)

2000 - 2001 ... Slept through most of it due to illness (must be the the only person who missed the millenium celebrations) :(

2001 - 2002 ... Finally received nearly a quarter of a million compensation payout from my old employer (gawd that was a good year) :biglaugh:

2003 - 2004 ... Got involved in a shoot out with the coppers (not fair they had real guns, mine was only a replica) :destroy:
2003 - 2004 ... Same year I got certified and put in a very nice mental hospital...
2003 - 2004 ... (think that was the year the missus & daughter left, can't remember though it was all a bit of blur around that time)

2005 - 2006 ... Left the nice institution, didn't want to but they threw me back into the real world anyway, they had great pool tables they and even let me bring in one of my miggies. :) (the food was awful though) :sealed:
2005 - 2006 ... Moved into new nice wee house... :)

2007 - 2008 ... Nearly demolished my nice new wee house when I knocked out a supporting beam while refurbishing, cost me a few bob did that one (and upset the neighbours a wee bit)... :o

2009 - 2010 ... Still in the process of rebuilding, taking a bit longer than planned, keep stopping to feed the squirrels and mucking around with my Amigas... :)

This year, finally discovered the internet and of course this great site, as for the next ten years, well who knows but one things for sure life is always full of little surprises... :roflmao:

(PS:Forgot to mention, the most recent thing I did was buy an onion !!!)

Hmm.

It started well. I even had a Power Tower A1200. Sold that for space reasons.
Then Divorce. Moved.
Depression and scraping by with my own company until 2005.
Got a job with cheapskate employer but good social life. Developed some interesting-ish software and got up to speed again however.
Moved again to London. Better job, worse social life.
Still no Amiga. Waiting for FPGAArcade for Minimig AGA, or Natami. Nice new 24" monitor came yesterday though. Without the power cable.

Professionally, this was what I feel will be my hump decade. Did very well for myself creating tech for video games, reaching the peak of my career a few years ago. Certainly I am quite proud of my work there, interesting to know billions of people have probably used stuff I have contributed to. Now recently out of work. Selling my nice house and car and moving to the sticks to semi-retire and generally be lazy. Created a small human along the way.

Amiga-wise, rediscovered it a couple of years ago. Got an A4000 recently but haven't had much time to play with it. Have spent way too much time reading this board and catching up on and learning all sorts of things that I didn't know about. I kind of feel like my rekindled passion for the Amiga is where my professional career is going, which is over the hump. I initially had lots of enthusiasm for the idea of trying to help push Amiga projects forward but learning more I kind of wonder what the point of it is if fundamental OS problems won't be solved in my lifetime. Not to say I don't still enjoy reading about it and playing with it, just seems too futile to try to accomplish anything useful.

Looks like you need to redefine what you consider "useful".

It can be very frustrating and self defeating to try to make the Amiga something it isn't and can never be, but there is still much that can be done and accomplished that would be considered very useful to hundreds of remaining Amiga users (including Amithlon, AROS, MorphOS2.x & AmigaOS3.x & 4.x users).  Don't lose your enthusiasm for all things Amiga by comparing it to Windows, MacOSX, or even Linux.

Amigawise: sold my A1200 back in 2005ish, used emulation since.

Other:

Co-developed about 40 children's products in the first 5 years working as an industrial designer. At times intense but very rewarding.

Left that job, had a year off to take stock and explore my options, travelled, hiked, went fishing.

Last few years: Had a bit of "crisis of confidence" when I started my own freelance design operation, scraping by and dealing with clients who want everything for nothing.  Simultaneously worked in a sheet metal factory to both supplement my income and to relearn manual-arts and team work.

To present: Phased that out in favour of working with my fiancĂ©e as a web developer.  While staying busy with loads of hobby projects including; props, gokarts, arcade machines, computers, motorbikes in my free time.

Now: Learning to be happy.

In the last 3 years I have successfully accomplished the reading of 245 AppleSpam(tm) messages on Amiga.org.
