Title: Buddha problem
Post by: koshman on October 12, 2010, 06:49:22 PM
I have a problem with Buddha Phoenix IDE in my A2000. I tried a 3,5" HDD, a 2,5" one and a CF card. That the CF card is not detected is normal and expected, but I wasn't able to even boot from a floppy with the 3,5"" attached. I get the usual  red border Software malfunction error within seconds after power on and I can't get any further.
With the 2,5" HDD I can boot from a 3.1 Install/WB floppy, but when I run HDToolbox, the Amiga freezes and restarts during detecting SCSI devices (at device 4).

The A2000 is rev. 6.3 with 1MB Chip RAM with 2 FDD drives and there are no other expansion cards besides the Buddha. There is a KS switcher 1.3/2.0 - tried both, neither changes anything.

Any suggestions?
Thanks.

EDIT: The A2000 doesn't have any issues, runs floppy games flawlessly, the drives are OK too - tested elsewhere. IIRC the Buddha worked fine in an A4000. I tried all Zorro slots.

I hope you don't have the Buddha in upside down.  That can kill it.

I hope not, what's the correct orientation? I have the IDE headers facing the floppy drives.

The Buddha firmware does not work with CF cards. There is a fix for it here (http://aminet.net/package/driver/media/IDEFix_patches). But you need the BuddhaFlash version of the Buddha in order to be able to update it yourself.

It has been years since I used one in an A2000.  I used to swap it back and forth my A3000 and IIRC correctly, on one of the the card was "upside down" and I THINK it was the A2000 which means the IDE headers go towards the back.  Don't quote me on this, because it was a while ago!

I do remember there was a piece of paper in the box that gave the correct orientations for the different Amiga models.  I'm not at home, but I have the ADF of the Buddha install floppy on my hard drive and I've just looked at the manual on the disk...

There's pages and pages of info, but the install the hardware just mentions connecting drives and makes no mention of actually putting the card in a Zorro slot.

I've looked online for a picture of a Buddha actually installed in an A2000 and came up with squat.  Have a look for the piece of paper and perhaps someone here can confirm the orientation.

@ Thomas: I'm aware of the situation with CF cards and I wasn't expecting it to work. I have the Flash Phoenix edition so I will think about flashing later.

@ Darrin: I have absolutely no clue where I put that paper :) But from what I found in various forum posts I should have it installed the right way.

Anyway I will thoroughly test it in my A4000 again tomorrow with the same drives to rule out any possibility of the HW being at fault.

Components to the right (facing the PSU)?

about orientation, how about checking zorro pinout? it should be fairly easy spotting GND lines on the card.

So much for that idea.  :)

Puzzling if it works OK in your A4000...

Well, as I'm trying to test the Buddha in an A4000 right now, anyone knows what's the correct orientation in an A4000 daughterboard? :)

Looking down from above, you should be able to see the components.

Yeah, thanks. I already risked it and the Buddha survived :) Anyway it works flawlessly in the A4000 - I had the 3,5" HDD partitioned and formatted in under 5 minutes. Plugged it back into the A2000 - same problem, couldn't even boot. The next thing I guess is finding out if the Zorro slots work at all. Unfortunately I don't have any other Zorro II cards at the moment so it might take a while...

Btw, do we have a new font or is it just my eyes playing tricks on me?
