Hi all!
Anyone using an a4000 with 10/100 Ethernet card and virgin media cable broadband???
Can it be done???
Regards Lee...

No reason why it can't be done. Boot up your favorite TCP client (I use Miami on my Miggy's) and away you go! Might have to fiddle with some settings, static DHCP, password and all that - but probably not. Only problem I've ever run into (and its not the Amiga's fault) is most of these high-speed cable providers only assign you one IP address. So, if like most of us, you need to switch between computers a lot, you'll need a router or simply reset your modem every time you move the cable from computer to the other.

Cheers for that, save2600!
Greetings from the uk, by the way, I'm just restoring my a4000 desktop! Changed the caps in the psu, next comes the motherboard, cause I have a few leaky ones. Oo err!!!

I've used my A4000 with cable broadband and now DSL using a USB Ethernet adapter plugged into my Deneb.
I used Genesis off the OS3.9 CD (but I've also used AmigaKit's Easynet with a PCMCIA adapter on my A1200).
The only think you have to do is set certain values such as your IP address, subnet mask, DNS server, etc.
All of these values can either be obtained by speaking to customer sercices or (the really easy way), plug a PC into the modem/router, open a DOS window and type "IPCONFIG /ALL". Everything you need should be in the response (just change the last 3 digits of the IP address if the PC is going to stay connected: pick something like 195 which isn't likely to get automatically assigned).
Now, in the case of my DSL modem, I would have needed a PC to set that up first because I had to run software and enter my log-on and password into the modem to activate my account. No need for one now.

I'm using Orange home DSL. If that can be made to work, anything can.

Hi Lee. I use an A4000 with an Ariadne II NIC and a Picasso IV card connected to a Virgin Media cable modem via a router. Using Genesis and mainly Aweb, as the iBrowse nag has now become more of an annoying insult than a reminder to 'buy'. Just gone to 50Mb BB but I doubt very much the old girl will get anywhere near those speeds (bless her!).

...with 10/100 Ethernet card...
Normally, those are PCI-cards. A normal A4000 doesn't have PCI-slots, in which case a Zorro-card like the XSurf or an Ariadne will work perfectly (I use a XSurf in both my A2000 and A3000). Zorro ethernetcards only come in 10 Mbps, but this will not make any difference in daily use.
Broadband on the Miggy works nicely. FTP, chat, Telnetconnections, e-mail are all fully usable and enjoyable. Browsing is hell (imo), though.

Cheers for the replies peeps!
That's been a great help. I do indeed plan on using my a4000 via a router and cable modem, with the virgin media service provider! Do you not get great responsiveness then, when using a pci network card, or would I be better off using a zorro III nic?
Cheers Lee...

A classic Amiga isn't capable to flood a 10 Mbps card, let alone a 100 Mbps card. Realistic transfer rates are somewhere between 200 and 700 KB/s.
With my A1200 & 3C589 pcmcia card, I get somewhere between 250 and 400 KBps on average.
I doubt a 100 Mbps PCI-card will make a significant difference, but I don't have experience so I can't tell for sure.

Seriously consider getting a Deneb USB2 card for your setup and then buy a cheap USB-Ethernet adapter.
Here's the one I use:
