Title: Glass filter for CM8833-II - to use or not to use?
Post by: TakeShad on October 02, 2010, 07:50:16 PM
Hi,

Do you guys think I should use an optical filter with my CM8833-II? It makes the picture so dark that I have to turn the contrast and the brightness settings of my monitor very high and I don't think that's a good thing.

I was using an optical filter with 1084S but CM8833-II has a different picture and I can't decide whether I should use the filter or not. What's your opinion?

I wouldn't use it, why are you using it anyway ?

Because 1084S strained my eyes so much that I couldn't bare it. I had to use the filter because I was concerned about my vision.

I think that CM8833-II is different and doesn't strain the eyes so much. But not I'm sure if it's really safe.

Hi TakeShad,

Having the contrast & brightness set too high on any CRT monitor is not a good idea, it will over time degrade the phosphors in the tube leading to a soft blurry picture.

I have tried these filters in the past and never found them to be very good at all, as for worrying about your eyesight, for almost 30 years I have used a CRT monitor on a daily basis and can safely say it hasn't damaged my eyesight in any way... :)

We know he has good eyesight, but please don't ask him if that CRT has caused him any brain damage.

Hi smerf,

No need to worry about brain damage here mate, it was declared faulty and beyond repair long ago... :)

I've even got the pictures & a certificate to prove it... :)

Then that 1084S is producing a distort picture or either it's refresh rate is too low.
What Amiga do you have ?
Cause if it's one that could fit a Indivision then you could try that and hook it up to a LCD/LED monitor.
Since I have those, I don't want to go sit behind a CRT, unless I really have to.

I hate LCD/LED displays for SD signals. I can't stand using my retro hardware with modern displays. That's why I must use CRTs.

1084S was ideal for me but now I have to use CM8833-II and I'm not fully satisfied with it.

TakeShad: If you're set on getting a filter, you may want to try a few more places, like Cyberguys, or Amazon. IME, most of the filters out there are privacy filters. I used to see 'contrast-enhancing' filters, something like that might help. Where do you live? 'Cuz you can still get 1084S monitors for not too much here in the States... sometimes...

I recommend taking time to adjust any monitor carefully, take your time. Been using my Toshiba TIMM 20" monitor for oh, maybe 18 years, never had any trouble with eyestrain, etc....

(But, Man, did I get some nasty eyestrain, and dizziness when I played Sega's Nights into Dreams in Widescreen mode on an HD set..... ouch..)

You might even want to talk to an eye doctor.... maybe they make special filters that could help......

I just put an LCD on my 3000, the colors are all washed out, I'm not happy with it but until I get some extra funds to buy a real monitor I'll deal with it.
