Title: A4000D SFX power supply upgrade works!
Post by: Heiroglyph on October 02, 2010, 03:44:35 AM
Has anyone tried putting the circuit board from an SFX size PC power supply inside the original 4000D power supply case?

The SFX specifications sound like it should fit.

Any better ideas?

It worked!  For very little cash, I now have a 350w Amiga 4000 desktop power supply with no case changes.

The only visual differences are that the fan is now outside the case and the drive cables are PC colors.  If I find a thinner 60mm fan I can put it back inside.

I paid $60 locally for an Antec AR30 power supply (yeah, as usual, local prices suck)

This power supply is even narrower than a normal SFX, but I don't think it was needed, I had plenty of width to spare.  From my research a normal SFX should have fit.

I unsoldered the SATA and motherboard cables, reused the motherboard cable from the old Amiga supply and permanently grounded the power on signal.

I reused the Amiga on/off switch and use it to connect power to the power supply.

The tricky bit was how to mount the new board since the 4000D power supply sits flush with the bottom of the case and still needs to be well grounded.

My solution was to cut the bottom out of the new power supply case and tack weld it to the Amiga power supply case.

It was brute force, but it worked well.  I'm just lucky to have the equipment.  I'm sure there are other ways, but this was straight forward.
