Did it ever exist or was it just pure vapour?
My guess is the latter.

My guess is the latter.
Considering all the Amiga people that were (and still are) working at Opera, I'd say it wasn't quite just vapour. The problem was Amiga itself at that point, quite turbulent with an unknown future.

Memory may be inaccurate after 10+ years, but the last communication I recall from Opera themselves was that an agreement was signed with a development group for an Amiga version and code was forwarded to them. (Opera Version 3.x I beleive) But after some amount of time there was no further communication from that Amiga group, so Opera considered the project dead and closed. With Commodore's demise and Amiga's future in sever doubt at the time, they declined to seek a new Amiga dev group.

The BeOS version certainly existed, I had a copy.
