Everyone probably knows that Sega Genesis Game pads work on Amigas and that they are available new at some of the game trading stores like GameStop. I've collected maybe a dozen of these. Usually, because Sega is different, only 1 fire button works, but it's still a usable joypad.
Whats new to me is that a very simple modification turns these into fully functional 6-button joypads. It was spelled out several years ago in the docs that come with ADoom, which was just re-released on Aminet. I did this last night. You simply swap the Vdd (+5 volts) and Sel wires inside the controller and connect a 470 ohm resister across these same 2 wires.
Of course, most games won't use all 6 buttons. But, it's nice to make these excellent controllers completely Amiga specific and compliant. Even the rapid fire functions work! These are better than the CD32 joypad.

I use an awsome Fighter stick SG-6 froma sega system on my Amiga. Is there a place I can see what these wires are so I can makes this mod?! I would love to get more then one working button out of it!!
-
As far as I remember Sega Master system 1 & 2 pads worked ok on Amiga 500(+)s without any modification.
I remember playing flashback with my Maverick joystick set to a Sega setting and being able to use one of my fire buttons as Space Bar, to draw my pistol and the other was used to jump and climb I think.
-
I picked up a couple of Genesis "clone" controllers, but they both show up as CD32 controllers, which don't work with most games. Is there a way to modify them so they show up as just a typical joystick?
-
That's good to see about the master system controllers. (I'm going to need some sort of pad/stick for my new amiga soon).
But what Roj said is a little unsettling, as I can pickup 2 brand new 3rd party megadrive pads off AU ebay for $12. The description does say they have some sort of mode button on the "shoulder" of the controller though, does that make any difference?

Please note that these Sega-Adaptors will be
supported by all games/emulators using lowlevel.library on Amiga OS 4. I wrote a Driver for AmigaInput for them some while ago, and there is a special version of lowlevel.library for OS 4, which maps the CD32 Buttons to an AmigaInput device.
Actually you even can freely choose the mapping using the GUI of AmigaInput.
:)

Cool :-)
Will AmigaInput support Sega or CD32 pads (with all buttons) when working with a Catweasel on an A1 ?

Hi!
At least currently support for pads using special adapters (like Sega...) is only existing on Classic Amiga. I am working currently on a Joystick-Driver (PC Analog-Stick) for the AmigaOne, though.

Cool, there are lots of PC Analog-Sticks around :-) .
Pity we wont be able to use those Sega or CD32 pads with a Catweasel, I have got kinda attached to them on my old Amiga :-( .
-
Well, a CD32 Pad should work, as you can use it as
a Digital Joystick also anyways :) The directions are like the directions of a digital stick, and the red button is like the fire button...
Only the ones which need adapters (Sega, 4-Player,...) will need
a Classic Amiga. And well, it would be possible that someone writes Drivers to support those on Catweasel too I guess...

I suppose both pads would work with the Catweasel then, just without the extra buttons :-( , until a driver is developed (fingers crossed) :-) .

Hi!
BTW: Anybody who has some other cool joystick-adapters and might be interested in testing some code please write me. I have myselves PSX Port, PC Joystick Adapter and Sega-Pads already.

Hi I use the following adapter to use Playstation controllers with My PC.
http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=PC&title=114167 (http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=PC&title=114167)
Any chance of Amiga support?
-
Depends on how this adaptor works... does it "emulate" the pad as a USB Game-Adapter or what does it do ? A USB Gamepad Driver for AmigaOne is in works...
Steffen
-
I am not too sure.
I had to install a driver for Windows XP for it to work before plugging in the USB part on the PC.
When the USB adapter has a PSX controller attached and it is plugged into the PC it is recognised as a USB playstation controller and you can bring up its custom configuration and setting by going to the standard 'game controllers' in control panel.
It quite a cheap adapter BTW an I reccomend it.
-
i have a psx-port and i have a PSx adapter which i connect to my JOYPORT or mouse portrt (if i want to use either a psx mouse or another pad :D)
but only 2 buttons work .... for now
and analoge sticks + Dpad..
-
The one im talkin about lets you use all buttons and analog as well as digital movement. It also supports duall shock vibration feedback. :-)
USB seems ideal for sending all those signals at a decent speed, that why I i think it would be great for Amigas rather than tryin to use the game ports or slower serial ports.
-
Nintendo entertainment system controllers also work the nes for short. :-)
-
Cannonfodder: Well, if special Drivers are needed I cannot say for sure if it will work... is there a SDK for developers (or Linux Drivers) available ?
I am thinking to investigate if PSX Port can be made working on the A1 with a new Driver... not right now, though.

If i find any info about drivers SDK etc I will send you a message.
Thanks :-)

Ok question to set my mind to rest before I spend some money.
Will a genuine master system, and/or a 3rd party megadrive pad "plug and play" with an amiga 500? Thanks.
-
If those controllers are for Sega, then yes. You get one fire button and usually, the turbo function works. With the mod described above and in the text describing the ADoom archive on Aminet, you get +5v correctly routed, all buttons work in ADoom (even Start and Mode, making 8 total), 2 fire buttons in other games that utilized them. I don't know yet if other Amiga games were written to this Sega standard. I believe this modified Sega controller will replace a CD32 controller for games written to that standard, but I haven't tested this yet.

Ami500;
Why not buy a 15 USD PSX-adaptor from www.tototek.com or www.liksang.com?
Then you can plug your PSX pad directly in any Amiga!!! And use 2 buttons + analogue...
You just have to swap one wire in the MD/Genesis -> PSX adaptor that can be purchased from those two links, and off you go!!!

Because right now it will be much cheaper and easier if I can buy some new megadrive pads to "plug and play" as it were, (AUD$12), rather than $15USD on an adapter and another whatever it is $$ on a PSX pad. :) But that may be an option in the future if I ever feel the need for analogue sticks. :)
Tenacious, do you have a direct link to the file you got that pad modifying information from? I can't seem to find what you are referring to on aminet. Thanks.
-
@ami500
My ISP is giving me trouble tonite, I'll be quick! Do a search for ADoom-1.3.lha. The details are in the Description text. If you DL the archive, that same text file is included with it. It's just a verbal proceedure, no pics or schematic. If I can get my scanner working, maybe I'll upload a view of the inside of the joypad. E-mail if I can be of use.
-
Ok thanks. I'll have a look for it soon. :)

Here they sell great joystick for amiga:
Amipuzas (http://www.iespana.es/armagazine_es/amipuzas/)

Now that's what I call a durable joystick - Skorpion! :-D I use one since 1996 and it was repaired (by it's manufacturer) only once! How prosaic! The cable solder was pulled out :-).
But actually we talk about CD32 gamepads so...
... this is the right solution from the same maker. Boomerang is made in many different standards for many platforms (PC, Nintendo, Sega, Amiga etc.) - gotta check it 'cause finding a genuine CD32 pad in good shape is getting harder and harder these days :-(.
