Title: More filesystems talk and PFS 1 on Aminet
Post by: brownb2 on September 25, 2010, 12:50:22 PM
I'm fed up of invalidating my Workbench and wondered if PFS2 or some other version was available on Aminet and came across this:

http://aminet.net/package/disk/misc/pfs95

Is this PFS1 and does it have any advantages?
[EDIT]Drat, just read elsewhere this version 1.95, floppy and small hard disk only.[/EDIT]

Issues regarding SFS such as in this post (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showpost.php?p=580827&postcount=28) have put me off using it since to my mind it's not much of an improvement on FFS (i.e. fragments, not too well supported etc).

I might have considered purchasing PFS3 if it wasn't for the fact it's in some sort of quasi-freely available land.

As a boot (ha!) note does anybody have a guide for installing and making any non standard Amiga filesystem bootable?

I wouldn't bother with it.

PFS3 is soon to become free and opensource (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?p=554308)

I appreciate you keeping the faith but us of little faith like me (who abandoned the Amiga some years ago) are a bit more pessimistic (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showpost.php?p=580169&postcount=114) about this becoming a reality.

FWIW I threw out two internal 100MB 1st gen zip drives about a year ago with about 4 or 5 blank disks :( I mean what the heck would I need them for...

As the "free" PFS3 is already out on a cover disk then I expect that even if it doesn't get "officially" released on Aminet then it will leak its way onto the net like an Kickstart 1.3 ROM image.  ;)

I'm waiting for it myself, but I'm currently using SFS while I wait.  It is easy to set up and backing up an Amiga partition is as easy as using DOpus and making a cup of tea.

I know what you mean about ZIP drives though.  I put together my A4000 tower and installed a internal IDE Zip Drive in a spare 5.25" bay.  A week later I wondered why I bothered and removed it.

I wonder if Michiel told Amiga Future it was "freely" available as in free to distribute on a cover (and thus then take copies of), or whether it was free as in Amiga Future has a "licence" to distribute only... I notice the Amiga Future guy didn't make the keyfile and download available in his most recent download updates.

I needed a PCI TV card the other month that I threw out too... I hadn't used it for 3-4 years after getting a DVB USB adapter for digital TV and "TV Box" for analog devices on my monitor. I did the same with an Etherlink 3 589D PCMCIA ethernet adaptor about a week before I realised the Amiga could only use a certain type.
*Sigh* I've just thrown out a RealMagic Hollywood Plus MPEG 2 decoder (http://reviews.cnet.com/search-results/designs-realmagic-hollywood-plus/1707-5_7-190948.html) useless these days... I hope I don't need that now...

I'm surprised more Amiga users haven't browsed EAB's file server. If there was a version of PFS3 there, it might be a revision old and impossible to update as cracked programs often are, but it still might work very well.

Oh, right!  I've been the a couple of times in the past and think I'm registered.  I wonder what my log-on and password were...

Couldn't work out what I used before so created a new user name and profile.  I can log into the main site, but I can't log into the download area - it keeps kicking me back to the logon-screen.  :(

Darrin, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

Hmmm.... maybe this was why I stopped going there.

Well, with support of up to 31 MB harddisks it's not too up-to-date...

Right, managed to get hold of it.  Shame I'm working for the next 3 weeks.  I'll install it when I get home and see how it feels compared to SFS.  :)

It will happen, don't worry. It's the sources that need sorting out, only the executables are included with Amiga Future.

Anyway, he hasn't thrown his disks out, he did ditch his drive though. I've sent him one of mine, which he returned after copying the stuff over and even included a PFS3 CD :)

Ditto, I signed up to see what was on offer in the way of software and it does the same for me so I gave up. I had a look at their FTP (generic login given in the forum) including rare apps folder and found nothing in it. Obviously nothing is rare! Now I just have the problem of choosing which forum I should spend most of my Amiga talk time, which why I didn't also sign up at eab when I joined amiga.org!

I found an additional box in my profile to check to become a member of "The Zone" (which is the download area).  Did that and it still didn't work.  Like you, I can access the forum.

Maybe you're not 31337 enough to get access to the warez?

Warez? I am shocked. I thought it was all demos and permission given software just like World of Spectrum... (http://www.worldofspectrum.org/permits/publishers.html)

BTW your avatar is freaking me out. I feel like someone is watching me. Mine just makes me think some drunk smiling bloke wants to be my friend.

Reminds me of the view you get of someone when you look through the security hole in your hotel room door.  I keep thinking that Piru is delivering clean towels or delivering room service.

"Room service!  Someone ordered pancakes!"

Some of you guys wouldn't make it as hackers. Some of you guys haven't even learned how to search yet. You can't even not find what doesn't exist ;).
