Title: Official X1000 B***h thread
Post by: persia on September 24, 2010, 06:52:50 PM
I do video editing, 3D rendering, a few other resource intensive tasks, I like to think that I get all eight of the cores in my main machine a little warm...

But you are right, there's really not that much to do on AmigaOS, so the need for power isn't really there.

Compare 1985 and the '80s in general with today.  Amigas were arguable at at about the same power level as PCs and Macs and were cheaper than Macs and name brand PCs.  There was modern software available, and things like lightwave and video toaster which you couldn't do on a PC/Mac.  When you bought an Amiga you bought state of the art.  Part of the flakiness of AmigaOS was excusable because it was pushing the hardware and software beyond the breaking point and there were no guardrails.

Today the X1000 is a little better spec'ed than a netbook, there's no software available that I can't run faster or better on a Mac or PC.  Price/Performance wise they make Apple Store look like Tescos...  Nothing is state of the art, the world is talking eSata and USB 3.0, AmigaOS hasn't even nailed down USB 2.0 yet.  XMOS?  For USD 100 I can stick a USB board in a PC and have all the tools to actually make it work available to me.  The X1000 does not in any way, shape or form represent the spirit of the original Amiga.

Certainly overpriced* (for now), but certainly not underpowered.  Tell me Persia what exactly the average user uses their computer for these days and what do you use yours for?

*How exactly is a company with limited funds able to go on and make better things and re-invest without actually making a profit?  Pray tell.

Sure some of what you say here might be true... but c'mon A-Eon dudes are trying to bring a new product to our small market. That's enough for me to like them. That's enough for many people around here. What do you expect of "new" Amiga? Development of new electronic circuits, computers, software is unbelieveably difficult (mostly due to high cost).

@persia

But you will have the choice of little stylized "A" or boing ball stickers to cover your Windows/Menu and Apple/Option keys. That looks pretty Amiga to me. ;-)

To be fair, the A1X1K is not an "Amiga", it is apart of the "AmigaOne" series.  So yes it's in the same spirit of the systems that Eyetech sold, hopefully with superior quality and parts.  What we consider the "Amiga Spirit" is best left to legends of our history and culture that we all share.

What drew me to the Amiga was it's gfx capabilities and it was cheap.  Not having Windows issues was a major perk and a half.  Today, hardware has to be cheap to nearly free and the software has to do what I want to do.  I don't think I'm alone either my requirements either.

Oh. Really? No problem - don't buy it! And ignore it, don't read threads about it, don't start threads about it, buy a soon to come Commodore Tablet or (or: AND) a multicore x86 beast. Just some suggestions... :-)

x1000 is just a platform that is OS4 compatible, it's not an Amiga and the last Amigas were A1200/4000 or CD32. R.I.P. Amiga.

Also OCS blitter & copper = 70mhz power in PC 8086/286 or ST/Mac 68000 CPU terms according to Byte/PCW benchmarks.....only today's PC/Mac is all about CPU speed for buyers, in the 80s custom chips were for real expert users not Dos or  Mac OS 1 boxes.

x1000 G5 CPU IS far superior to netbook Intel Atom (revised Pentium 3 core) mhz per mhz with just one core btw

(except for GPU + PC gaming)

Why did you create a B***h thread just about a product you don't intend to get, don't intend to support and don't even consider an Amiga product?

Might as well put up a thread about cheap china PC's being rubbish compared to whats out there (oh sorry we got CommodoreUSA threads for that)
