Title: Problem with iBook & Wifi after router upgrade
Post by: dougal on September 17, 2010, 11:31:02 AM
I had my modem/router software upgraded and everything is fine except that my iBook refuses to join my wireless network.

It says Error joing the airport network "xxxxx"

I have tried the following with no success:

Did a Keychain repair
Deleted my network from "preferred networks"
Deleted the associated Keychain
Renamed my SSID
Changed the password to connect to my wireless

Nothing! it still refuses to Join!! Arrrgggg!!! Any help by someone who is more knolegeable than me will really be appreciated.

Don't know how old your iBook is, but some of the older models have some problems with specific routers and/or WPA2 encryption. You could try changing that to see if it solves your problem.

Does it give it a 'Self-Assigned IP Address'?

If so I would be curious as well to know the answer behind this one.

For a while I found Airport was getting a Self-Assigned IP Address from my LinkSys router... the error seemed to go away by itself after a few days so I never did find out what the problem was.

No idea... I just know that before i had the software of the router/modem upgraded , my iBook used to work perfectly using WPA security.

Software is OS X 10.4.11 Tiger

Yes, so check to see if your router is still on WPA - or switched to WPA2...

It is set for both WPA and WPA2 simultaneously

I have tried WPA+WPA2 and also WPA on its own... None work

With no security it connects no problem

I am thinking the mac must have something stored that needs to be cleaned but no idea.

I did have problems with my iBook at the time in regard to the battery life and the battery clock time gets lost because it loses all power before the time/date is saved.  I don't know if you suffer such power problems, but it was around this time I started experiencing problems with Airport.

I don't use my iBook anymore though as the crappy thin power lead has frayed for the 2nd time now and I can no longer charge it.  Shame its not MorphOS compatible otherwise I could probably buy a new cable and sell it to an interested MorphOS user.

I don't miss the iBook though as its so frigging slow playing videos on youtube and flash... ahhh lets no go there.

I am 100% sure it has to do with the upgrade of my router as it was working perfectly till exactly before i upgraded the router. It doesnt have any clock problems or anything like that.

I have seen many problems with older Apple gear and misc. wireless access points and routers using WPA and WPA2. Especially Dlink, but maybe I can add yours to the list.

Maybe you can revert to your previous firmware? At least for testing?

Do you still have your old router ?

Could you daisy chain routers ?

Its the same router, just the firmware was updated.

Both my iPhones still work on my wireless, just my iBook doesnt work anymore.

I don't get it because i set it up as it was before. I tried WPA+WPA2, WPA2 on its own, WPA on its own, tried changing the password, i changed the SSID.

My iBook supports fully WPA as it was previously (up until yesterday) with WPA security.

It makes no sense. And when i turn off security the iBook connects perfectly.

There must be some setting that is remembering something. I need to start afresh but cant.

I cleaned up my prefered networks, cleaned up the keychains, did a keychain repair.

I am stuck :(

My guess is that your upgraded router/modem firmware contains updated WPA and WPA2 software, which doesn't work with your iBook.

Steve Jobs paid the router companies to make the new router firmwares incompatible with old iBooks so people would have to buy new ones.

I set my security to WEP instead of WPA and its working fine now.

Very weired!!

Could it be the region? My router says Europe, but my iBook came from USA

:juggler:
WEP is cracked in less than a minute...
:rtfm:

The regional setting has to with what channels may be used - a wrong setting may get you into trouble.

Mousehouse has had your answer since the first reply... Older macs tend to have problems with WPA/WPA2 security. Your router update is what pushed it over the edge.

When I was consulting we have a school with two different wireless network, one for their computers (Pc's and new Macs) and one for the old powerPC macs.

Hi!

I have never tinkered much with MacOS / Macs; but when it comes to Windows PCs I have many times found that upgrading the WiFi driver solves WPA / WPA2 problems. Are there any drivers in MacOS that could be updated, and maybe that would cure this problem?

We have yet to read what kind of iBook this is, but most likely the problem is the wireless chip. Older iBooks actually had a pcmcia/cardbus slot under the keyboard, and a card stuck in there, newer ones have mini-PCI cards that also can be replaced.

The iBook is a G3 800Mhz (2003 model) and the wireless Airport card is 802.11B

When i first bought it, it had problems connecting to my WPA network because it had an older OS X which didnt support WPA. But once i upgraded it to Tiger it worked perfectly with all 3 WPA networks i have at home and also with my WPA at work.

It still works fine with my other WPA networks at home except for the one in question.
