I don't know if it's too late to contact Anthony, he may have left for Antarctica already, but he still has plenty of information on his site to help you fix your Amiga:
Amiga Technical Resource - Christchurch, New Zealand - http://amiga.serveftp.net/

I might have an 040 + RAM for it that I don't need if you want to just skip the 030 nonsense and use a 040?

I'm glad you got in contact with Anthony, he really knows his stuff so your Amiga will be in good hands if you send it to him for repairs.
I use my A1200 every day for all sorts of tasks, I have all my Amigas set up here in my office networked and linked. They've got years of life left in them! :)
I notice you have a Mac Mini G4, have you tried MorphOS on it yet? Since AmigaOS4 has two new hardware platforms coming out I don't think Hyperion will be focussing on porting it to Apple hardware any time soon, so MorphOS is the best option for an Amiga operating system on your Mac Mini for now. If you don't have it already, you can download the bootable CD image here - http://www.morphos-team.net/downloads.html
