Can't do anything Amiga-related with it. If you ever wanted to play with OSX 10.4, now's your chance.
-
These things always looked odd or out of place to me, though I've never seen one in real life, only in pics.
I remember Steve Jobbs on Larry King I think when these came out talking about how macintosh computers were the cadillac of computers, the best most stylish computers in the world, then they show this cow...
Am I the only one who thinks this is just ugly?
Hey maybe very useful decent computer, but this is a strange looking one.
Too bad it worn't run morphOS.

too bad.. well i guess i will give tiger a try.. something for my daughter to play with. i do agree it is ugly!

It should be fast enough for UAE. Run that when you get sick of MacOS.

I think not, or at least you'd have to use frameskip for quite a lot of things.

iMac G4 is somewhat unlikely, mainly because of relatively slow performance and intergrated nVidia graphics.

Hi lost_loven, Only a few weeks ago I bought an iMac G4 17" 800Mhz 160 gig HD OSX 10.4.11. I've already got a C64 emulator running at full speed on it and a SNES emulator also running at full speed on it. I only I could find an Amiga emulator for this set up, Id like to give that a go. Surely if it can run the SNES emulator at full speed it should be able to handle a miggy emulator. :)
-
well guess i will fiddle with it. be neat to toy with.. have the xbox and wii for emu needs, a3k and 5xa500 and 7pc's/laptops for amiga emu etc.. now a mac lol.. I did have a thought, i have a spare 160 gig hd also, maybe swap out the 60, bump up the ram, partition it into 3 and have os 9, os 10, and make have a partition for maybe a windoze, toss on it 98 or something .. max mac it :)

Dunno which version of OSX your running but to get the best out of this model you'd be best to upgrade it to OSX 10.4.11 (no point in going higher on this machine). I upgraded mine to 1GB ram for about £35. :)
If your looking for emulators for this iMac try here...

I've got an unused one sitting in my garage. They are cute but really lack the power to run modern OS X applications. If there was a Morphos (hint, hint) available, then you could paint the base to look like half a bong ball. That would be cool....

I think this is a more appropriate vehicular equivalent.

I don't think this would run amiga emulation very well at all. I'm not sure if its relevant, but I tried many 1.0-1.5 ghz intel pc's and all had stuttered sound and video playback slowness. Seems like 2ghz+ always works, but anything less has problems if your running octamed with many channels or whatever...
If you want to emulate a basic amiga 500 maybe... but not anything high end amiga...
I agree it would be cool running morphOS.

I've got one with the same specs, it's cute, but definitely not a powerhouse. Can't even play youtube smoothly for the most part.
-
what about old mac games? run stuff from say 1989 ish to like 1999? if there is any that is good and worth a chance to play? and of course for a 10 year old girl. I am sure there is something decent.

Yeah, the one in the garage is my son's, he couldn't do anything with it anymore so we replaced it with a throwaway dual 1 GHz G4, which handles modern things ok.
-
So those Apple things are no good, huh?
Then strip those things in pieces, sell the memory (if socketed) and use the HD in one Amiga 600/1200.
Recycling is the word. :)
-
Depends on what you want to do with it:look at the apps it would run when new,it will run those apps still!
INstead of giving the stripped carcass to be crushed by some silly green recycler, sell the pieces on ebay.
If the screen is positioned correctly, you don't even see the base;it seems as the picture is floating in mid-air.
-
DOn't forget there are still linux PPC distros that should run on this imac.
-

Yeah I got a spare iBook G4 I hardly ever use anymore roughly same specs I guess, YouTube is painfully slow on it as is flash, but I guess thats no surprise to anyone as Adobe are pants at everything they do; exc. PDF lol. Also I avoid HD video all the time as the computer just hangs.
-
I wonder what UAE would run at on this machine? I mean even at 1/15th the speed you are still talking 50 MHz, which is quite decent for a retro Amiga. Maybe Jaguar and UAE or Yellow Dog Linux and UAE? But you have to paint the base to make a half a bong ball....

Rather badly, because PPC UAE has no Just-In-Time compilation. You need to use the frameskip option for sure.
-
I find it somehow odd that people who are so crazily nostalgic for a 25 year old computer that ran at 7 to 25 MHz are deriding as useless a computer one-third that age and at least thirty times faster with vastly improved memory, sound, and video display.
I wish Cloanto produced an Amiga Forever Mac release that installed and ran with all the ease and features of the Windows version.I'd buy at least one copy if the price were the same,or even $10 more than the Windows version.
Computers and their marketing drive me nuts:the laptop that cost several thousand dollars is now supposedly absolutely worthless yet there sits a nice screen that ought to be able to display my pictures in a slideshow but I am supposed to buy a dedicated device instead. Anybody interested in /have programs for HP620LX palmtop?
-
@recidivist: Cloanto did nothing but re-passing money from ROM licenses to Amiga.inc and selling CD-ROM disks with the FREEWARE WinUAE!
Illegal? No.
Immoral? Heck, yes.
-
IS not the license to use ROM code needed to be LEGAL and MORAL ?
And how does one buy ROM license for Win UAE if one does not have an Amiga?
-
Ugly? That model makes a great indirect light for your night stand, just load up an all white background and tilt the screen to the ceiling.
I actually like the case and screen design, very unique and compact. Sort of like a MacMini with a very adjustable LCD screen planted on top of it. Maybe you can gut the case and fit a 1.5GHz G4 MacMini into it and then you could run MorphOS2.5 on it, if you can configure a video cable to the LCD monitor from the Mini's DVI port.
That would be a cool project and the best use of your iMac IMHO.
-
@recidivist
Someone other than Toni would be working on the UAE bits, and WinUAE is the core of Amiga Forever. I'm pretty sure Toni has absolutely no interest in PowerPC platforms.
Cloanto's RetroPlatform could find a home anywhere, though, with a bit of effort. (But, RP9 looks like it might infringe upon the i4i patent that Microsoft ran afoul of. Software patents suck.)
-
And how does one buy ROM license for Win UAE if one does not have an Amiga?
You shouldn't have to buy a ROM licence for something released 25 years ago !
Every other parts of the system are available free of charge, and even open source for the most part, that includes:
- free and open source hardware (minimig)
- free games (lots of commercial games have been freely released by their owner, including most Team17 games for example)
- free and open source software based-emulator
- ...
If the 1.3 ROM (and yes, I mean the ROM, not even the disk based workbench apps, and I mean 1.3 only, newer versions could be left closed) was at least released for free (I'm not talking about open sourcing it), you could just get a full free legal package anywhere on the internet, one click, and here you go.
Apple released old software, you don't have to buy your CPC ROM,... it should be the same for the Amiga...
I believe this would increase emulation and Amiga's usage: there is nothing to loose.
-
Don't understand what all the fuss is about, regarding Legal or Moral issues with obtaining a KS ROM image file.
I haven't been on the internet for long but I've already came across numerous sites where you can if you need it erm... 'obtain' KS ROM image files.
I have never in 20 odd years of using computers came across one single person who hasn't, shall we say 'used' or 'borrowed' some sort of software for their computer. Hell even the guy who installed OSX and upgraded my iMac included for me some erm... 'borrowed' software onto it and he was a qualified Apple technician working for an Apple approved company on a legitimate call out... ;)
-
Apple released old versions of the OS up to 7.5.5, but nothing newer, nor have Apple released any ROM images .That's why various Mac emulators for the Amiga required the owner to buy a set of Apple ROMS or have an Apple computer in their possession to read the ROMs into Amiga memory.
Legally, stealing is stealing, whether it be a loaf of bread(Les Miserables) or a software program or ?Thankfully we now recognize the difference in stealing a loaf of bread out of desperate hunger versus the theft of something coveted but not necessary for life itself.
Instead of wanting 1.3 ROM released for free, why not propse to the patent/copyright owners that they sell such ROMs for a nominal fee?
Oh,wait! I seem to recall ROM chips in Amigakit and other vendors' CURRENT offerings.
Do you suppose one of the main problems with the Amiga enthusiasts is that too many are still "pirates" at heart, and want other people to spend significant portions of life working on Amiga projects for no reward ???
-
The only way to legally obtain the ROMs is to extract them from machines you already own or buy Amiga Forever. I bought Amiga Forever...
-
Franko:
So you are telling us the Apple tech is also a thief?
Shocking...NOT.
I know that a lot of computer service and sales people givve the customers little bonuses in software despite the illegality.Just because stealing is easy or widespread doesn't make it morally correct (or legal).
Oh yes,I know a fellow who had a growing computer refurbishing business in Cincinnati. He bought ex-business computers ,cleaned the dirt off the hardware, formatted the hard drives with a new install of Windows and sold hundreds of machines to satisfied customers.Microsoft objected to his business in that he had not bothered to obtain licenses for those Windows installs.I believe the fines were enough to put him out of business. He seemed a fine,hard-working young businessman except for that.
Anybody who wants to discard their iMac G4 can send it to me instead of the trash can.
IF you want free software,it is widely available in the linux world.
-
How people get their rom images is irrelevant. If I have a lower moral standard than you do there's nothing you can do about it...
btw, ironic nickname for such a white knight.
-
Well,a Brit told me I have a dry sense of humor...........
-
It depends just how low your moral standard is and where you choose to exercise your standards.Societies have laws that generally punish those who have significantly lower moral standards than average.Of course politicians and celebrities are somehow given more leeway than Joe Amiga.

re:nickname
Recidivist as in keeps returning to old habits despite societal pressure,i.e. use old Commodore computers.

The definition revolves around a criminal element that you are omitting, but that's ok :)

DUDE! My iMac G3 can run everything but AGA fullspeed. You've got to be kidding me that his G4 can't. Of course, my G3 runs linux but still.
-
Maybe it's just me, but if you want to run Amiga software then use Amiga hardware, I would never torture myself to running an Amiga emulator when there is still plenty of genuine Amiga hardware still around, and this iMacG4 I bought is only useful for the internet and pales in comparison to my various Amiga Set ups. :D
