Title: Birdie textures 16 colours for perfect palette
Post by: OldSkool on July 21, 2010, 01:55:20 PM
Hello. Just bought an A1200 (Blizzard1230) and I'm setting up my workbench. Already installed all kind of goodies.
I saw some very nice 16 colour Birdie examples from MR500, Rebel and Cammy.
I use the 16 colour palette Cammy and Rebel made.
I'm now looking for the birdie textures they use? already searched on Aminet. Does anybody know where I can download these (Birdie textures)?

Why not create your own ones using Deluxepaint or PPaint, just grab and save the texture you have drawn and save it as a brush. That way you can experiment with Birdie until you find one your really happy with and looks cool.

Have the 1200 for 1 month now.
Just thought you could probably download these things somewhere.
I already tried converting some themes (OS4) which you can download from aminet with PP to 16 colours and then remap the colours to the palette.
But this didn't look very good.

I've been meaning to finish off and upload a few of my 16 colour VisualPrefs/Birdie themes for a while now, sorry to anyone who has wanted them. I'm not 100% happy with the ones I've made so far, there are only a few small adjustments I'd like to make to them to keep them nice and consistent, then I'll upload them both to Aminet and to the AmigaLook website.

Here's a preview of the window theme, icons and some skin graphics for a Workbench game that I'm working on:

I'll try my best to get this finished and uploaded soon, thanks for motivating me :)

Looks very good.

And everything in 16 colours (looks like 256).

Hope it will be released soon.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to let you know that Rebel has finished adjusting his palette. It's almost the same as it was before but better, trust me!

You can download it for FullPalette here - http://home.exetel.com.au/amiga/FullPalette.prefs
And for Scalos' Palette preferences here - http://home.exetel.com.au/amiga/ScalosPalette.pre

That theme-preview looks very good. Amazing to see how you handle 16 colors.

I loaded prefs from this post to FullPalette, but OS 3.9 icons looks awful... How I can achieve some thing like in this post?

The icons in 3.9 were designed for a mugh higher colour depth. If you don't like the way they remap you would need to replace them with icons that already use this 16 colour palette. I don't think you'll be able to make a more suitable 16 colour palette to remap those 3.9 icons to while still keeping the MUI/MagicWB grey shades. You're welcome to try though.

I can't remember if OS3.9 has an icon dither mode, but you could try it if it does. NewIcons has a dither option which works really well.

@radzik
Read the article named "Workbench Cookbook" and see the resulting workbench image with glowicons at the end of the mag.

http://www.totalamiga.org/pdf/totalamiga_2.pdf

Just remember you are using 3.9, and that means that some suggestions made in that article are not relevant to you, but then it is a very good guide on getting the basics on a very good looking workbench with 16 colours and glowicons.

Thanks for article. So I need Glowicons (WCP)?

Cammy where I can find 16 colors icons like in this post? On Aminet? But which one?

Rebel is far from finishing the iconset, sorry. We need an Amiga project forum to work on all of these things but we don't know anyone who can set up an appropriate forum for us.

Can someone post their Birdie input from their startup-sequence or user startup?

I read the docs, but for what ever reason, none of the images are loading correctly.

Does anyone who uses this palette want to try out the VisualPrefs/Birdie theme I use? It's loosely based on the look of the new Silver theme for AmigaOS 4.1.2 but was pixelled from scratch by Rebel.

If you'd like to try it, download it here: http://home.exetel.com.au/amiga/SilverSkin.lha

Make a new drawer in your Prefs/Presets/ drawer called "Skins" and extract this archive there. Load up the GUI preferences (VisualPrefs) and from the Project menu select Open... then choose either SilverBlue.pre or SilverGreen.pre from the new Skins drawer, and select "Apply" when the requester pops up. Check that all the gadgets have changed to the new silver ones (you won't see the Birdie pattern yet) and hit Save.

Next you need to make sure you have this line in your Startup-Sequence, assuming you've already installed VisualPrefs and Birdie, which you can get here:

http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/birdie2000
http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/VisualPrefs

Now, here is the line you need to have in your Startup-Sequence:

Run <>NIL: C:Birdie SYS:Prefs/Presets/Skins/SilverGreen/Active SYS:Prefs/Presets/Skins/SilverGreen/InActive ACTIVEPATTERN REDRAWBITMAPS PUBSCREENS NOICONBORDER FLOODMASKMWB

If you want the title bars to look right, you will either need to use a 13 point font for your Screen Font, or manually adjust the Screen and Window Titlebar Height in the System settings in VisualPrefs' GUI preferences so you can see the top and bottom of the gadgets.

Please let me know if you try out these skins, it would be nice to see how it works for some other people. Oh, there are Blue and Green to choose from at the moment.

The palette plus skins are just awesome and work like a charm!

I can't wait for the future icons uploads.

Btw... I just noticed the screen representation on 2 icons!!!
Isn't the one a wb screen with the classic BoingRed wallpaper and the other a screen with Lotus on it?
Pure awesomeness!!! \o/

Yeah, that's right. There's also one for the Mac drive that has the blue smiley face logo on it, I'll have to take some more screenshots. My favourites are the Spare Desk, CD32 and Rocket Tool icon (which I'm writing a GUI for).

Hey guys. I've just finished fixing up my Silver skins, and also pixelled a whole set of all-new Silver-themed MUI images to go with them. To use the MUI images, extract the archive and copy the contents of the drawers into the corresponding drawers in the main MUI drawer. There is a Preset file you can call to quickly change all the images to the new Silver ones, but you would be best to apply it over each gadget rather than globally, or else it might change all your other MUI settings (spacing, fonts, patterns). To do this, go through each page of the MUI settings and hover over the top of the gadget you want to change and select Silver from the Presets menu that pops up while holding the right mouse button down. Press the Test button and see if you like it, and Save it if you do.

I hope this stuff is of use to someone.

http://home.exetel.com.au/~amiga/SilverSkins.lha
http://home.exetel.com.au/~amiga/SilverMUI.lha

(If you already use the Silver skins, download these and overwrite the old ones. You'll need to disable VisualPrefs and Birdie before you overwrite the images if they're in use though.)

Pure awesomeness Rebel mate. You're the Ambassador of Kwan :)

Can't wait for some future icons to match the perfect set. Btw are the iBrowse icons available anywhere?

No worries mate, I'm glad to be of service. :)

It may take a while to get a decent amount of icons ready, I haven't done much more than what's in the preview image way up above in the thread. Perhaps things will go a little quicker if they ever get that Amiga project development forum running.

Until then, here are some IBrowse Navigation and Status images to try out. I just finished them up:

http://home.exetel.com.au/~amiga/IBrowseImages.lha

Hope they're alright.

I think a version of this theme might come handy for the 68k version of AROS; i know that lately Tony Wilen is busy on make the AGA screens work properly and did complain about the fact that actual AROS themes do not scale good...

Hi Cammy and Rebel,

Just dusted of my Amiga and tried your skins. They are very nice indeed. First had some trouble with the Birdie program crashing but by placing a the and of the startup-sequence its seems to work.

Just have an issue with outline fonts. They are displayed blue instead of white and black when installing the skins (the Birdie skin distorts the icon font).
Probably I'm doing something wrong?
What should I do (I have fullpallete with your palette installed)?

Regards,

Dear All

Hereby an example of the blue icon text I have on my screen.
Probably something to do with my start-up sequence.

Here's a preview of the window theme, icons and some skin graphics for a Workbench game that I'm working on.

Hmm, these look great. I prefer this style to the Mason icons that are popular on OS4. I made a few icons myself, but I never got around to a full set and my style always changed too much from icon to icon.

Keep up the good work!
