It was the first game I played on the Amiga. A 2d turn based strategy game. You took a team of space marine types, with different units having different weapons, and moved gradually from the left to the right, where the aliens were advancing from. Graphics were simple, terrain was mostly grass, the odd bush and a few buildings and obstacles where one could position snipers. You had to get your team well set, because when the aliens advanced they came on brutally strong and could wipe you out in a few turns.
Anyone remember this?
Cheers!

Space Hulk?

I think it's X-Com: UFO Enemy unknown

Do you mean X-Com Defence? UFO: Enemy Unknown was a different game I think.

Thinking about it now, i may have got it mixed up with another game.
Is it Space Crusade?
-
Hilt? Hilt II? Laser Squad? isometric or (almost) top down view?

Some clarification courtesy of HOL (http://hol.abime.net/1788). I had no idea a US Amiga release even existed. The copy I have, bought from a US dealer (probably Softhut or Safe Harbor ages ago), is the European release.

One of my all time favourite games. I bought the AGA version when it first came out. I also bought the PC compilation containing Win95 versions of this and the sequels Terror from the Deep and whatever the crappy third one was.
The PC version has better graphics in that it shades out areas beyond your range of vision, but worse sound. Terror From the Deep would have been a great sequel if it wasn't so bloody hard (The lobster men are too hard to kill and the lizard-like telepaths take over your men too easily and use them to slaughter your squad with ease). Forget the third game - total pants.

sounds like XCOM / UFO (best game ever made btw)
The correct titles are XCOM UFO Defense for the US release, and UFO Enemy Unknown for the European release. They had different box art too.
It could be Space Crusade but that was all indoors

Actually it doesn't sound like any of those games, because in them you're required to explore the area and exterminate any discovered aliens not the other way round...

Thanks for all the responses everyone.
xcom - I don`t think it was this, though conceptually its similar. It definitely didn`t look that nice and was in 2d, set horizontally and vertically rather than on a 3d angle.
Mostly it looked like Laser Squad, but its was played over a huge area and you always started on the left. I think maps were randomly generated, though I could be wrong. Colour-wise it looked like xcom, but definitely the graphics were much poorer. Maybe there were also robots that looked like white or grey dustbins. You team was white I think.

RoboSport?

... not, it seems to not have any space marine in it.
-
Graphically similar, but no. Thanks though.
Oh, and though it wasn`t Space Hulk either, that was really scary, the speed they moved! I played that after the other game I`m searching for.

Could it be the Breach games ?

I remeber a PD game called Task force was very similar, maybe?

Was it the Chaos Engine? http://www.arsvcs.demon.co.uk/leisure/chaos/images/l1.jpg

Not Task Force, looked a bit like Breach, but your team was definitely white.
Chaos Engine - wow! Totally forgotten about that!

Laser squad?

Well I remember playing the SSI AD&D games like Champions of Krynn and Pools of Radiance etc... to death. Mostly medieval/fantasy-based, but I believe they may have ventured at some point into space adventure. Could it possibly have been one of their escapades?

there were two Buck Rodgers games in that series

I barely remember playing this game demo on one of those Euro mag cover disks that describes what you're looking for. Turn based, white armored soldiers (kinda looked like chunky Star Wars stormtroopers).
-
Yes, yes, that sounds like the thing.
Its not Laser squad, sorry.
