Title: First time on the net, what did you do?
Post by: ElPolloDiabl on July 03, 2010, 08:10:51 AM
Hi, what did you get up to the when you got connected to the internet?

I went to some Amiga sites including aminet, Yahoo, a couple of university websites and some companies (only intro pages at that time).

It was FTP for me and I got to it via a door program on a local BBS that gave members 30 minutes access per day. No web back then.

I sent an email to a friend at IBM in the US via a Vax terminal at NLP. Think it was 1978. I remember it being quite difficult as email addresses back then were complicated - you had to route it.

Oh, a bit difficult to remember, it was 15-16 years ago. But I think I visited the Swedish Magazine "Datormagazin" (they specialized solely on Commodore computers back then, C64/C128 and Amiga, they also had a BBS). I had been reading much about Internet in magazine articles, the various protocols and applications, so I tried to explore them myself. I pinged. I fingered. I e-mailed. I FTP'd. I used newsgroups. I made my own first homepage. I also manage to find (through Altavista, I don't think Google even existed back then) some pictures of girls with no clothes on in interesting poses. ;)

In essence; I had been reading so much about the Internet when I connected myself for the first time, that I just had to find out by myself what it was all about, so I think I did everything you could do back then.

WWW wasn't really what it is today, most companies didn't even have a webpage, and many of those few who did presented some logotype and their phone number so you could call them if you had any questions. :) A different view of security as well. I mean, "ping", "finger", etc. It was a time of innocence. :)

I dialed my Amiga 3000 into the university network (14400kbit, static IP), which of course was connected to the internet. I had previously found http://elfquest.com/ with the HP-workstations on the campus running Mosaic. I guess I looked at some more of it, downloaded some LaTeX stuff and read some Usenet artices.

Oh, and I had some BBS experience years before, but I understood the question as concerning a TCP/IP, SLIP or PPP internet connection and none of the local BBSs offered this.

Must've been in 96 using a 14k4 connected to my 1200 dialing into the Tulip Computers access point (long distance...mum and dad were not happy with the phone bill). Probably headed straight to IRC. #amiganl@ircnet was my hangout for years.

First internet was a terminal only dial-in from university. I used to get Jason Compton's Amiga Report via uucp'ed email. Had to log mail output to file and then decode the file - that was a bit before the WWW became known and before transparent attachment encoding through MIME.
Life is so easy today... ;)

Gee thats a long time ago.  Well after a few years using my Amiga to access local bbs boards that I racked up enormous phone bills on (!) I purchased Miami and downloaded AMosiac and the later iBrowse.  This was in 1993 on my souped-up A1200.  But as for what I first did... hmm probably create my own home page.

Ps. Wasn't there a search engine back in them days that was maintained solely on the Amigas?  I am sure it was around for many years, it wasn't just searching Amiga sites it searched the whole internet just like Google and Yahoo do.  Can't remember its name. :S

Not sure I remember but I think it was ftp:ing into Aminet. Only had access through uni at that time. There wasn't much www at that time. Then I got stuck in the MUD and never properly finished my studies. And they say drugs are dangerous.... ;-)

There was The Amiga Web Directory maintained by CUCUG. In fact, that was one of the first sites I went to back in 1996. I have memories of finding Amiga.org via that site too on my A1200. A lot of my usage on the net at that time was newsgroups and email (circa 96-99)

Okay, since we're not talking about the BBS period in the 1980s, I'll skip that....

First time on the Internet was through a University account.  I used Gopher a lot (as this was pre-WWW).   I would dial into the University's VAX with my Amiga500 using JrTerm and a 2400 baud Supra modem (no, not 28K, 2400 - but I started on a 300 baud modem in the 1980s).

One of the first things I did was e-mail a guy in Washington for some reason (I live in central Canada).  He replied while I was still in that particular session and I couldn't believe that I had gotten a written reply from across the continent almost immediately.

I remember reading the rumour - and then the confirmation - of the Commodore bankruptcy on the Usenet with this machine!

We didn't ever have internet on the A1200 (It didn't even have a HD...) and eventually got a PC where we got dialup. Think that was around 1998/99.

Also, I always wondered, what did Amiga.org look like in 1994?

First thing I did was emailing a few of my friends that I was online.
I think it was 1999 for the first time on my own pc.

But a friends place I was already online in 1996, he had ISDN and later even manged to use 2 lines, making it 128K.

No the first thing I did, but I did look at a few things, but then it always was fake.
Video's nowadays, intresting to see some things, but again not my primary need for the net.
I think if someone is constantly lookin' for porn, you seriously need to get a life and a girlfriend

I had a Atari 1200 my first computer and I would use telenet to dial in to compuserve. I lived in Ft Irwin Calif, a Army base in the middle of the desert. I had to dial in to palm springs long distance, and at 300 buld you had to browse quick, I remember going to download a picture of the statule of liberty that was in compute mag. I had tried to type it all in, and never worked, so I founds the file on there servers and was on top of the world, that was my cherry on the net. I tell people I was on the internet before the internet was cool. I got my first A1000 in Germany and didn't have much luck finding any thing to do on the net, but we would go to the main train station in Frankfurt and buy the Fred Fish disks and PD stuff, so the net didn't become inprotant till I returned to the states.

The internet "developed", it didn't start on any particular day......I signed up with compuserve in around 89/90 and then soon after the www began. Before that we had Gopher, FTP, POP, smtp, Slip, PPP, UseNet etc. The first website I went to was NetScape's home page....exciting !

But.....this wasn't new, just different !

Fidonet was around in the 80's and I spent a lot of time, jumping from POP to POP, Telnet / Kermit was the internet way before Mr Berners Lee layed claim to the World Wide Web. Hoping across to look at content in the states from the UK was quite a regular thing before the "Internet" had even made the news.

I bought my first modem in 95. The main reason was that my gf back at the time did an exchange year in Manchester/UK. Phone calls from GER to UK were rather expensive at that time (IIRC before 1.1.96 it was DEM 1.15/min!) and email was the all new thing! But also that time was the last time I wrote lots of paper based letters (still have them all in a few shoe cartons).
The first things I used a broswer for was amiga related stuff and gaining information about travelling to Bhutan (eventually the planed journey became a trip to India). The very 1st time I used a browser was in a CIP-pool in Manchester in autumn 95. I think it ran some Netscape. I was wondering like "well, so this is the broadly discussed Internet and what now?" But somehow I got excited and got the modem the next day I returned to Germany.
At home I used for the first while a terminal account from the university.

I think my connection was via GEnie too, through the interchange email they had in the mid-90s.  GEnie was my lowest cost connection since I was a junior sysop in the Amiga section.

My first real internet connection was probably earthlink...where I still have an email account.

I first got connected to the internet many years ago.  At the very beginning, I used a terminal emulation program on my A2000HD to access a text only webpage server called freenet over dial-up.  Then I got a SLIP account and used AmiTCP/IP and Mosaic.  Later updated to PPP, AmiTCP/IP and AWeb-II.  I used FTPMount to download software from the original Aminet site.

In no particular order, my favourite sites were:
The Amiga Web Directory
The Amiga Zone
Christian Kemp's Amiga Network News
http://www.amiga-news.de/en/
Amiga.org
another Amiga news site that I can't remember the name
Aminet

Before XOOPS it was phpNuke.

Which got nuked by every script kiddie with 5 seconds to spare.

Funnily enough it was thanks to this site that I found out about goatse

Eventually Wayne got fed up and the result was what has since been called "the great reboot". Which is why a lot of us "oldtimers" have signup dates from mid 2002. Previous to the move, AO allowed for anonymous comments (iirc that did stop with immediate effect with Xoops).

Fun times.

Back to the original question... 1998 or so and it was an internet cafe. The first site I ever used was Yahoo. Before that though I also used (briefly) Moonlight BBS, which was run by John Marchant on an A4000 and I connected to that with an Ericson MC-16 palmtop hooked up to a GSM phone... Interestingly it was cheaper to call it up by mobile phone than the call charges for non local with the rates we were getting at the time.

Damn I feel old now.

@Karlos:That would be a dial up connection never connecting to the actual 'internet' proper then?

Well my oldest memory is downloading various early DOS emulators for things like the Coleco and Atari VCS at komkon.org or something. Atmospheric Heights was an amazing introduction to the world of arcade roms too. And I think there was another site called The Dump for TG16 and NeoGeo roms.

Didn't bother with it at home until it was assigned flat rate monthly deal accessed via freephone 800 numbers some time in the mid to late 90s though years after we knackered out the floppy drives on the Sun workstations with Netscape.

It's a shame Commodore didn't grab this new goose laying golden eggs with both hands and make Amiga a nice out of the box internet solution. But then maybe like the Dreamcast it was just too early for it's time to work.

On the contrary, the Amiga whilst Commodore was alive had a perfectly serviceable suite of tools to go "online".

The trouble was there was only really BBS's available. The internet didn't really feature outside of honking great universities. The World Wide Web really only started to catch on after death of Commodore.

first online service I had access to was Prodigy, via a 386sx with 2400bps modem. I'm not sure if their service even had connectivity with the wider internet at that time. But I was 11, so naturally the first thing I did was troll their helpline with a question about where babies come from.

I remember The Dump, they had Genesis roms for a while but were taken down after a complaint from some industry association.

You could do with less than 8 Megs as well. I dont remember how much memory I had in it, but after hours of setup strugle I got my A500 on the net.  It was upgraded to kickstart 2 and had a harddrive. AmiTCP, ALynx and Amosaic, dont remember the dialing program. I think I also did softkick it to 3.0 at some point to run OS3 for getting more modern browsers to run. And the 14.4k modem was quite fast at the time:)
Spent lots of time at newsgroups at the time.

I'd been trying to recall recently when I first got on the net...must have been 1996. I remember buying a 28.8 modem from my local Amiga shop in Brierley hill (the west mids of england - I grew up in the UK before moving to aus). The shop owner also gave my a copy of NCOMM ;-) and I was hooked on BBS's for a few months until I pursuaded my Dad to sign us up to Cable internets dial up service. My first email address was with net @address...remember those guys?? and I used webcrawler as a search engine - they were pretty big back in the day. Back in 1996 my stock Amiga 1200 with 6mb was pretty good at surfing the web and I dont recall there being many sites it couldnt handle. I finally bought a PC in about late 1997.

That's exactly the way I did it at my (Canadian) university as well.  You used a Terminal program to log into the university's VAX mainframe, and there was something called PINE, and you searched the internet by navigating through GOPHER sites.  No WWW yet.

I was in the university library and looked at pictures of naked women in something called Gopher which was sort of an early www.  They were 256-colour GIFs and each one took a few minutes to download.

I remember thinking at the time 'I bet you could make money by charging people to look at these photos'...

Hi, what did you get up to the when you got connected to the internet?

I got immediately disconnected and then reconnected after a half hour of retries.

The second thing i did was go on a BBS.

The third thing was to order a faster computer.

... and then a faster modem.

It's a shame Commodore didn't grab this new goose laying golden eggs with both hands and make Amiga a nice out of the box internet solution. But then maybe like the Dreamcast it was just too early for it's time to work.

Here's a thought: Was the CD32 the first pure games console you could "play online"  (with 2 modems over dial-up, or with a games server as well in theory)

Waaaaaay too far ahead of its time!!

Wow.. many memories came to my mind with this post..

Yeah, i am BBSs Users days too... in the 80s

I used Commodore 64/128 and Amiga 1000, 500, later A1200, For Conections

But when i started in Internet, i started in Text Mode, you know terminal mode, i conected too to some Universitys and use PINE, hehehe.. The Firsts things i do in Internet was IRC Chat (that way i met my ex-wife!)..Yeah, in thats days i was many hours, Bill expensive telephone services, i am not sleep by many days.. But one day 95/96 a friend of mine, installed a Miami, Ibrowse, AWEB, and other things, amd magic Starts.. Before this i browse the web in Text mode, you can do in thats times, using www. in text mode!.. Yeah! I can doed that with my Commdore 64/128 too!!!

Then when i started in Graphics mode in 96, i remember used Yahoo.com, Altavista.com, and searched, somethings about Amiga, Commodore, Music, Musicians Webs, VW webs - Pics, Honda Dax Webs and pics, Drums sets, Drummers, and more about music.
I'm one of those people that are indexed that knew Internet with Amiga, in thats times when I spoke about Internet  automatically related with Amiga.

And now.. i am writing this post from my A1200!!!!

Yeah Still Alive!

I disabled the silly menu provided my shell account and changed my default mail program to Elm. Then I sorted out how to access Usenet, used Gopher to access a Cure fan site, and then used Telnet to order some stuff from cdnow and cdjapan. When I finally got a PPP account (my shell provider stopped giving out SLIP accounts, and I had to switch providers for PPP), I did pretty much the same stuff. Prior to 1996 or so, I only used HTTP to access technology vendor sites.

The Internet I prefer to say the first time I was on-line. I signed up for Genie 1990. Played cards and found it easier to find what I was looking for than with the present Internet. I had a 2400 baud modem and an Amiga 500.

Ps. Wasn't there a search engine back in them days that was maintained solely on the Amigas?  I am sure it was around for many years, it wasn't just searching Amiga sites it searched the whole internet just like Google and Yahoo do.  Can't remember its name. :S

AmiCrawler? Which then became AmiSpider.

Bloody pOS. I remember looking at screenshots of that never-to-exist OS back in the day.

I used Pine to my university back in 1996, Altavista, various Amiga sites (although I used the university PCs). I'd get gifs and jpegs on the low-colour PCs, put them onto 720KB floppies, and view them on my A1200 in HAM8 :-p

I also remember playing on a few MUDs.

I started on irc. The MTV Europe program Most Wanted (hosted by Ray Cokes) had an on screen chat room.

a500 + 2400 baud modem + amitcp = awesome

The modem & isp account was borrowed from work, all I had to do was pay the long distance phone bill....

I think I remember going online with my C64 and a 300 baud modem back in 1984. I remember services like Genie, Prodigy and Compuserve were the big online destinations. I moderated the Turbo Silver and Imagine 3d SIGs on Compuserve in the late 80's, early 90's.

Man, am I old!
