Title: Amiga related OS on a tablet/slate?
Post by: persia on June 18, 2010, 02:37:33 PM
2010 seems to be the year of tablet/slate/pad computing.  RIM is now talking about taking on Apple and Android in this area.  Is there any possibility of an Amiga related OS (any of them) joining the party?

IBM had made a concept PDA for which Hyperion made a version of OS 4.0 for.  Shortly thereafter, IBM sold off the 440-series processor line to AMCC where it has gone on to become the processor in the SAM 440 series computers.  I think, in order to get it to work on such a small form factor machine, they had to remove the 68k compatibility JIT, Petunia.  Other than that it was not that much different from standard OS 4.

Let's see, Apple has the iTunes Store, and Android has Market.
Anything similar for AROS, MorphOS or OS4?

Desktop OS's just don't work on tablets. It has to be touch based from the begining. Microsoft has been trying to push tablets for 10 years but, Windows just doesn't work well in touch form...I've tried it, it's bad.

AROS is probably the only candidate but it'll be tough since the UI isn't designed for it.  Perhaps later on in the year something else would might be started along this line of thought.  Or not.

Only 10 years? Micro$oft are a bunch of newbies to tablets. I still have my GRiDPad 1910 from 1989 :)

Not sure about AOS4 support, AROS is possible if it can be ported to ARM, but what is really interesting at the moment is these chinese tablets on eBay:

(BTW, I am not the seller, I just think these things are amazing value)

You get an 800mhz Tablet (Remember the iPad is only 1ghz)

And you also get Android of course. I'm sure other OS's can be installed on these things too.

For £67.89 (I think you can get them for around $100 in the US) these things are impressive.

I'm tempted to order either one of these or a Dingoo... I'm seeing if Android has good emulator support first. :D

Is it just me or are these chinese tablets impressive?

@DBAlex

Ah, the Eken M001.  Total cr@p, cheaply made, low powered (600 Mhz CPU), Android 1.5.  Charger pre-broken so you don't waste your time trying it.  It's one of the ones my friend brought back from HK.  Basically a cut rate ebook reader.  There's a whole lot better in the pipeline, unfortunately they'll cost more....

I'm headed up to the beaches in Vietnam in a short time, they usually get all the chinese stuff and there are some decent shops in Da Nang, I guess I can be drawn away from the beaches for a little while....

Are we talking impotent baby tablets like iPad or REAL tablet computers by the masters Fujitsu produced since the 90s?

Early P-II tablets by Fuji just added a 'mouse' driver to use Win98 IIRC. To get OS4 onto a tablet therefore needs a 1 day tweak and an on screen keyboard for use. Ditto going back as far as the AMD 5x86 based machines. I used Dpaint 2 PC under Windows 95 and it was fantastic too. Battery life was pretty awesome @ 3.5hrs a decade ago too.

Of course all the cool tablet hardware is x86 Centrino or similar based so that's not really the scope of the problem ;)

Yes, tablets are nothing new, just changing form factors and increasing processing/memory. Besides the GRiDPad 1910 I mentioned before, which was the first ever commercial tablet,  I have a couple even from IBM. Your Fujitsu tablets are popular, but my favorites are my  Mitubishi Amitys - nice digital picture frames and photo albums to carry along.
