Title: Workbench on HD-disks for A4000?
Post by: patrik on November 25, 2003, 07:03:35 PM
Was Workbench (3.0 or 3.1) for the A4000 (some A3000 machines maybe?) supplied on HD-disks at any time?

yes i belive 3.1 was on high density floppies for the Amiga Tech A4000T... I do know they came on a set of HD disks for one amiga model and im quite sure its this one.

Didn't Amiga Tech A4000T (or Escom) model have a DD built-in FD drive instead of HD? What would be the use of WB on HD disks then? Are you sure about this?

I think that all the disk based WB operating systems were supplied on DD disks.

Me too.  I can say with certainty that all Commodore Amiga workbench disks were DD.

Now, what happened after the time C= went bust, is anybody's guess.   IIRC, there were several supplier companies that just said "copyrights be damned" and plowed ahead and released products they were starting to ramp up production on when C= folded.  I believe 3.1 ROMS were in that lot... So it may be that some of those came with HD diskettes.  I have never seen one, but I have seen LOTS of variations of workbench disks from that time period, and wouldn't be surprised if someone showed me one, someday.

Yes and no. C= made 3.1 Installdisks for the C= A4000T on 1.76 MB but the disks never had been sold.

I got a copy of the three disks from the Commodore Support Mailbox at that time.

For the A4000D and the A3000, even if they had factoryinstalled Chinon-HD-drives, the Installdisks were  6x 880KB DD-floppies.

Did anyone preserve those high density A4000 (or 4000T) Workbench 3.1 disks? Or are they lost forever?

I just realized that the startup-sequence of A4000T Workbench3.1 floppy starts with:

; $VER: Startup-Sequence_LD 40.3 (31.8.93)
; Startup-Sequence for low-density floppies

I would love to see the Startup-Sequence for the high density A4000T version.  What were the floppies named?

Yes, also on my Double Denstiy AmigaOS3.1 version workbench.library is on the floppies.

The difference with the high density version is that installation is different since files are in different disks.
